Fine, let me do what I want with my private property with the bandwith I pay for. What? My ISP has rules against running "servers"? How about a good "european socialist" like you help me to claim my free speech rights on this internet by pointing out that public servitude should only be used for common carriers instead of serving the needs and wishes of a bunch of fucktards in Holywood. If you game me that, I would be able to chose Yahoo instead of being forced to use other people's property to share my files.
The DHS letters linked to by the Washington Times were mostly about illegal immigrant handling and was worded so that you might think they were only considering such things for criminals on airplanes. While it may be a politically expedient cover, treating immigrants that way is still repugnant. People who have been convicted of violent crimes are another story because they have proved their willingness to harm others, but by that logic everyone at the TSA and DHS should wear shock collars too.
I only submit journal articles, so you can check for yourself.
I would never have linked to the neosmart article because it's ignorant and inflammatory. RMS has been very good at documenting the real harm done by "IP" enforcement to the developing world. His accusations of harm from an organization like Gate's charity are more than "FUD" they are well founded and reasonable arguments. Every year, millions of people die who could be saved if patents did not keep India, China and other nations from making cheap anti-biotics and HIV medication. They die so that big pharmacy companies can continue to make big money and Gates is buying into it. His foundation pushes "respect" for IP which is both wrong and self serving. RMS has also linked to and documented the purchase of independent newspapers and other nefarious activity from the Gates Foundation. Because the Foundation is not transparent with it's books, we can not know the magnitude of these wrongs or if they outweigh the good done. Mr. Gates is a multiply convicted monopolist (felon) and it is up to him to prove his innocence rather than for us to prove his guilt, but RMS goes a long way toward proving that Gate's new business is much like his old one.
The US did more environmental damage with DU than anyone could do with what is essentially purified dirt, insoluble, acid leached, crushed ore. Those on the giving end were also exposed to DU and some became ill. How's that for hypocrisy?
No one would tie up their phone line for low speed internet access if better networks were cheaper. Even those 20% would change their minds if they knew they could get better service. Better networks should be cheaper because they require much less equipment than PoTS, so this represents a serious failure of US markets. It is a failure to deliver the message as well as services and the fault lies with the incumbent providers who would like to keep the same kind of data price structure they enjoyed in 1950.
Even if they don't produce much electricity, having a curtian of cloth over your roof will reduce your air conditioning needs. Getting electricity too is a bonus.
They sell Windows AV. They have a lot in common with people offering "free iPods". Stunts like this serve two objectives: They advertise McAffee and they give the illusion that user actions make a difference. The false conclusion we are supposed to draw is that you can somehow be spam free if only you do this or that instead of this and that. This is well discussed in the Security Absurdity articles. That attitude is required for both Windows and AV vendors to survive but people are not nearly as dumb as M$ needs them to be.
You can have all of that with free software today. Wine does DX9, and the major graphics card makers have drivers for GNU/Linux. I don't know enough about database driven file systems, but here is one sql based system just for you.
Companies that obviously rape their customers end up having 24% drops in revenue even when they are a monopoly like M$ or the MAFIAA companies. Broadcast, the RIAA and non free software are business models that have had their day but are supplanted by better business models. Companies that continue with an inferior business model and demand government protection earn poor reputations and eventually fail. Companies that operate in free markets and offer fair deals do well. M$ pretends to be one but is obviously and immutably the other.
In theory, M$ Office has support for Word Perfect. In reality, M$ Office does not support M$ Office and this is why OOXML is such a mess. The kind of support they are talking about is just another weapon to them. The sum of their anti-competitive efforts against others is something that does not work for their own customers.
IBM, Sun and others have made real moves to free software. M$ does not have the technical expertise or confidence to do the same. As Steve Ballmer said back in 1995:
"It doesn't matter if we bang our heads and fail," says Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's executive V.P. for sales and service. "We keep right on banging and banging and banging and banging and banging."
You can translate that as they don't care if something does not work for you and you don't want it, they are going to shove it on you anyway. There's nothing new here and no change should be expected.
They are always becoming friendlier but somehow never quit the full frontal assault. Their arsenal includes a full spectrum of technical sabotage, PR, legal threats on top of ordinary competition. If this is a joke, I'm tired of hearing it.
Imaginary Crime would be a better name than IP Crime. Imaginary property theft should lead to imaginary punishment. It would be more proper for the MPAA to prove real losses in civil court, which would be hard to do seeing as the movies in question all had record breaking revenue. Criminal copyright laws are absurd.
Conflict resolution, Legal Status: This brick may remove other building components without further notice if they conflict with our agreement or copyrights. Pending laws will require the addition of our bricks in every building. If any part of our brick is deemed unenforceable all other parts will remain in force.
Contract change: The brick may be unilaterally changed without further notice. This includes monthly use fees and all other terms of service.
Exclusivity and Ownership if IP: You may not share, duplicate modify, reverse engineer study or understand the brick in any way. You may not discuss the brick with your friends. Harsh civil and criminal laws will be applied to anyone who dares understand the brick. You also agree that the IP of the brick is the exclusive property of Bell Canada and additionally protected by trade secret laws. Any loss of trade secret will irreparably harm Bell and you agree that Bell will not be adequately compensated by applicable laws.
Background check: We don't just give our bricks to anyone, even though law requires them in every house. You agree to divulge your credit, academic, medical and any other records we ask for. You might not be notified as we pilfer your history and you will not be compensated as we sell you to the highest bidder.
Bell's data shows that unrestricted P2P creates no congestion in better than 95% of their networks. Schemes to "filter" P2P will slow down 100% of their networks. It is obvious that either:
They are incompetent. They are going to create a problem to solve one that does not exist. Or
They are liars. Their goals and reasons are different from those stated.
It matters because you don't have to toss Java out if you want to move to a free platform. This is a reduction of friction that's good for everyone. The choice of one or the other no longer has to be made. The "write once run anywhere" language will finally be what it said it was.
Most GNU/Linux distributions solved this problem years ago and they did it much better than Windows ever will.
GNU/Linux distribution menus are arranged by function and task. The KDE menu, for example, has "Science and Math", "Office", "Internet" and other things any computer user would recognize. The sub menus have a name and description, KWord is a Word Processor, so is OO.org Writer.
You can compare that to the hodge podge of Vendor solutions and permutate those through the mindless changes M$ made to their defaults over several versions of Windoze. What you see is menus arranged by Vendor. The user is supposed to just know what Adobe, Correl, Novel and others can do for them. Programs that do the same thing never end up in the same place where the user might - gasp - compare them or find them easily. The only thing worse is DRM. When you combine that with all of the different default locations for finding programs or saving files, you end up what Bill Gates described.
Bill Gates obviously enjoyed his job, in part because he was able to get a bunch of people to do boring things. Free people do not have to do unpleasant things for other people. Strong people have the courage to persue their dreams and make them profitable for everyone. Evil people persue their dreams by crushing others.
I'd love to have a 10 GB replacement drive for some of my laptops. They must have all run away with $100 laptops I can't find.

Tens of millions of dollars worth of yellowcake is a tiny percentage of the loot that was the real objective of the Iraq war.

Because most people already have a roof, I imagined most people will roll these things out with an air gap like conventional solar panels or awnings.
Even if they don't produce much electricity, having a curtian of cloth over your roof will reduce your air conditioning needs. Getting electricity too is a bonus.
It would be like rather then just patching Windows, you formatted your HD and started over
That's what I recommend anytime I see Windows TM.

Because Windows most needs help/replacement and that help/snake-oil is what McAfee sells.
