Nobody can really claim that they chose Lindows for any other reason than the similarity to Windows.
Duh, it's Linux that acts like Windows, Lindows, what's wrong with that? No one is going to get confused are they? Lindows does not claim to be from Microsoft. They have claimed some interoperability and ease of use for a Windows user.
The name is just fine and the trend of monopolizing varients of names is a distrubing new piece of anti-comptitive stupidity. Take it to it's logical conclusion. Is there any name that anyone can use to imply something simply works like or with Windoze? Does IBM still own the names "PC", "personal computer" and "personal system"? No one can do anything if you get too stupid and complient.
Microsoft is proving that many governments are for sale.
One popular way for MDs to break into the industry is to go to related fields where medical knowledge is being used in the context of IT, such as Medical Informatics.
You might also try Medical Consulting. If the IT work you have been doing for yourself is useful, it will be useful to other doctors. So, if you can't land a job at Harvard or the local University, you can be working in IT for yourself. If you are relatively self sufficient IT wise, you can be helping others.
There's a very real need for clueful Medical IT people. The average private practice is a train wreck of propriatory garbage executed on Windoze. Most of them are plauged with the ususal keylogging viruses and spyware and have virtually zero chance of protecting patient records or being HIPPA complient. I visited one office where the doctors and staff were using Kazaa and had full page porn ads poping up in front of patients. I have also seen windoze done well, but it was a medium size place that could afford a full time IT dude. Free software,of course is cheaper, easier and more secure.
Have you seen GNUMed? They have a nice patient database and are working on assisted diagnosis. It's from Austrailia, so I don't know how well it takes care of Byzant^H^H^H^H US paper work.
Be careful to look before you leap. A man's gotta eat. IT is very competitive. There's plenty of work that needs to be done, but you have a huge pile of BS to wade through in order to get it done right. Every dinky little M$ shareware downloading clerk thinks they are an IT expert. Disruptions in IT are not something the average doctor wants to deal with and most just want to ignore the problem an hope it goes away. Being a doctor, you have a leg up, but you might want to try helping a buddy out over the weekend or vacation before you switch professions.
Unless there is some very subtle joke here, I think that Google have a point.
The government should not be in the business of judging jokes. The joke is not subtle and it's not very creative. So what?
Copyright is an exacting thing so that people CAN build on the work of others - that's the whole point of copyright to begin with. As for Trademark, yeah the site is misleading, but Booble is not Google.
With all the improvements in XP and 2003, sometimes that's the only thing that works. Who says GUI tools are always better than keystrokes?
That's why I prefer the free software. My new favorite keystorkes are CTRL-ALT-Fn and CTRL-ALT-Backspace. I don't miss not needing to use the one with delete in it as much. With all the improvements in X autoconfiguring, I won't miss needing my new favorites much either.
As much as I hate porn and as much as I like Google, I value freedom more and hope Google loses. Paradoy DESERVES to make money, it's creative. When you get to the point that reasonable men can dissagree, you have left the realm of imperical fact and entered the world of faith where government should not have a hand. How much creativity is involved with Booble? Close to zero and it's mostly repulsive and it did not come from Google.
Come on, where has your tiny witt gone? Your "teh" trolls were so much more orignial. I'm getting bored of reading the same insults for every post I make. I expect so much more from nasty paid trolls like you, don't let me and your task masters down.
Of course, it's not magic. This is what happens when there's no real incentive to break other people's software, software is properly modularized and there is total transparency. Honest software is good software. Yet, like you, I'm still amazed everytime I do an apt-get upgrade.
The only time apt did not work for me was a migration from potato to woody. It failed because I did not have a large enough var partition. An extra 500M drive, mounted up as var with coppies of what was on my 150M partition saved the day. That was a simple self inflicted failure. I could have avoided it all together by writing out configuration files and simply installing Woody instead of upgrading Potato.
Other wonderful magic is how older hardware continues to be useful. The package continuity is awsome. People still maintain the OLVWM and that is still a great UI for a Pentium class machine. Nicer still is that newer pacages like Black Box run even better. It completely contradicts the bloat and obsolescence comercial software suffers as well as comercial software's instability. Bit rot is planned obsolescence and it does not exist in the free software world.
Three chears for the package maintainers! Free software rules.
Thanks for a thoughtful and well researched post. Have you considered a bigger reason the programmer may be pissed? Could it be because much of his career has been a big lie?
The biggest lie of all is that Non Free software puts food on the table. It does not. It simply locks up your work for 100 years so that it can be used against you, just like this. Offshoring exposes this lie for what it is.
The Free Software community welcomes contributions from all around the world. Free software can not be used against it's authors.
Think about this the next time you sign a NDA. RMS was right about them being a promise to be a bad person. When you make such a promise to screw others, you should not be surprised when the person who you make that promise to turns around and screws you with your own work.
The same thing works for bogus patents in other fields of engineering too. The power you grant big companies to screw others will be turned against you at their earliest convenience. It is a disaster for the US and the world.
You got the maligning of free software right, but why? Don't forget your governement's burning desire go tap and censor your email as well as corporate america's desire to turn the internet, especially email, into a well controled broadcast medium. They all hat what free software represents and it's ability to twart those goals. Your govenment wants to control the press and big dumb companies want to profit from that control. Free software eliminates the ability to control. Non-free software promises contontrols unlike those seen in any other media, ever. Bill Gate's vision of email will give both parties what they want
Linus WMD, my ass. This particular incident is trivial, but marks the beginning of the real war of words that will be followed by more repressive deeds.
Now surely mixing a couple chuckles about the attack on the great evil to cross the earth since the birth of Bill Gates mixed in with that garbage couldn't do much harm.
The attack on SCO is a useless outrage but the reaction can be many times worse than you imagine.
It hurts because the attack itself is futile. No one cares about SCO's crummy little corporate billboard, least of all SCO. They have admitted to being on the way out. You can't hurt SCO more than dead, so this attack can only help them by lending undeserved public sympathy. Some people without a clue might even buy into SCO's propaganda about the free software world being out to get them instead of simply ignoring them till they die.
We will learn the truth of this when they catch the 13 year old who has the Windoze skills required to write the virus. Real free software advocates and programmers have much better things to do than use M$ computers to screw the net and SCO. The worst would be for Microsoft to have bought an agent provocateur who will say all sorts of crazy things when caught.
Peren's and other's Richstag fire fears are well founded in the result of previous worms. Is it a co-incidence that Bill Gates stood up the other day to promise us all a bright sunny spam free future if only he could specify the way email works? I doubt it! Previous Microsoft born diseases have been used by major ISPs to further enfoce the comercial software world's artificial distinction between "servers" and "clients" on the internet. Ports have been blocked to prevent normal services, such as email, html, ftp and others so that only scofflaw P2P applications can function. I fear that this silly worm will be used to ban free software and re-work email so that it becomes the corporate controled mess that some companies and governments want it to be. I'm afraid now. Are you?
Powerful intrests are striking back. The "In Soviet Russia" and other nasty trolls are doubtlessly printed up by gangs of paid PR drones, but CNN does not write about them or Steve Barkto. The real war of words has been launched against free software. They are going to try to make it look like free software "echo boxes" have created terrorist like fanatics who are causing real harm.
Once upon a time, a clever vulture decided to vomit on a corpse so that his friends would be less inclined to eat it and he would get more. His friends were repulsed, but ate it anyway. Normal birds, meanwhile, find more wholsome food.
So goes the wireless world. The greedy jackasses will do thier best to shove hotspots into your face instead of offering wireless as a competitive edge. The same morons would charge for lighting and hot water if they could.
Boo-hooo, i'm teh soo smartestest becuase i cann qote some obskure reference to somme incident that happen in fucking 1998 as proof that im teh smartestest!!!1!
Get a fucking life you worthless loser.
That was real sweet and deserves to be elevated from it's AC 0 rating. It's a story everyone should know along with Microsoft's other PR gaffs, like forging letters to Congress criters, the apple switcher and other nice fat lies.
It never ceases to amaze me how much time people waste on flames like that. Keep it comming, your time must be paid for but mine is free. You can't be paid much and you're not worth it but I'm happy you are wasting money that could be spent really harming free software.
If my desktop starts to accumulate a lot of clutter due to a hectic project, etc, I make a folder called "CURRENT" on the desktop
That's a good start. Chances are that you can organize the common things you do into catagories and make subfolders. I think of it a psuedo program manager and make something like that anytime I'm forced to use one of those painfully obsolete GUI's. HTML indexed files work on any environment and are a good way to organize your work too. It's better to use your own desktop folder or a link to a folder in a non standard location for some marginal improvement in security.
Your friend is not very clever, he's just working around the limitations of very bad tools he has at his disposal. All that mental efort would better be expened on something else.
It should have it's own desktop. If you make a seperate desktop for each project you are working on, you can spare yourself much hunting. Well labled window blinds in Window Maker, KDE etc, help too. You will never have to hunt for tiny icons again. Ten desktops do it for me and I sit the workspace selector on the side, where it will pop out when I mouse over it.
How do people function with the single desktop nightmare that Windoze gives them?
Not much of the desktop shows, but I think he's using Netscape.
Bill Gates shows off his new pet project. I'm sure he does read Slashdot and pays many others to do the same, not that he pays them much. I wonder if he's offshored his trolling division. Steve Barkto was so embarasing AND expensive.
Steve Baller would come running down the hall by my office (i was an MSDOS developer) shouting "OS/2 OS/2 OS/2" letting us know our project was doomed.
That may be true.
Microsoft wrote OS/2! To say they broke its back is ridiculous!... They couldnt sell it.
That is only part true and contains enough omisions to make it a deliberate lie. IBM also put lots of development into OS/2. They provided sane guidance but what they got from Microsoft was nothing compared to what it became. More importanlty, however, Microsoft did break OS/2 with anti-competive agreements with big PC makers that insured that OS/2 would always cost the end user more than Microsoft's offerings. Microsoft was convicted of breaking anti-trustlaws for that it is the main reason OS/2 lacked device drivers and never was adopted. It was a better system, it could have cost less and it is still better than Microsoft's current kludge, XP.
Today, free software is better and it will soon take over. Once again, IBM is on the bandwagon. They have always picked the best of breed. Microsoft's days are numbered because they can't lock out free.
I don't believe that opening the Windows source is more important than educating children or trying to treat AIDS in Africa.
Neither do I because free and superior alternatives exist.
It's hard to imagine that Mr. Gates really cares about education, though. His little pet organization, the BSA, has robbed public school systems of millions of dollars for having the nerve to run unauthorized coppies of M$ Word. Public school systems that can't afford computers and software to begin with should not be taxed by the world's richest man. If he cared at all he could grant all educational organizations a royalty free and perpetual license to use any and all Microsoft junk without sharing a line of code. This would save shcool systems billions of dollars a year, but Mr. Gates is more interested in taking than giving.
I'll reserve judgement on his AIDS work till I've seen more. His record of taking credit for other people's work is a black mark that he will have to work hard to overcome.
Just curious why you call DVD "soon to be obsolete"
There are about 8 diferent DVD "standards" out there, none of them have a writer than can store more than 4.7GB. While that might be nice to have in the short term, put it into some central box with a nice network card. It's so much easier to do things that way than it is to have a DVD for every computer in the house. This little Mac is a specialty box and should get it's media files over the network. A CD or DVD can be used to set it up, if you don't broadband, but it's fairly useless after than, except for movies. While it would be cool to run a big screen with an old Mac box, you can get your movie from your local network.
At the very least, they could have used a front loading DVD player and have extended the orignial slot. I would have left it alone.
And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.
The disgrace is that the US governenment continues to do business with a criminal. The US government has already branded Mr. Gates a criminal monopolist, so there is no position of Trust. A criminal should not enjoy a position of Profit at the public expense.
As he continues to enjoy his position, it is doubtful Congress will care much what the Queen does with him. What they care most is that he continues to rob her.
Her Majesty to change Her mind, you have to prove that Bill Gates is a coward - but if you'll just say "Your Majesty, this man is a criminal!", the response would be "so fscking what, my dear subject?".
"M'Lady, that bastard is robbing you blind." might do. She only needs to have a chat with an IBM representative, be given a Mac laptop or see a Knoppix demo to know that her govenment is nuts to be giving Mr. Gates all the money they do.
Woot, Bill Gates now joins Mick Jagger and others as "knights". She and you are crosseyed.
Let's pick apart your silly world view and give real credit where it's due. You claim that Microsoft has given us:
easy and affordable computing.
an easy GUI
a good example of what to do with lots of money.
Nonsense. If you think Microsoft crap is easy, you need to play with a Mac or Knoppix. Tests have shown that real people do just as well with KDE as they do with XP, despite only having Microsoft computing experience. The free GUIs are here and can be just as easy to use as non-free, though Apple deserves real credit for a useful and easy to use GUI. As a philathopist, Bill leaves much to be desired. Almost all of his giving has strings attached to make even more money for his company and himself. The greatest act of charity Mr. Gates could perform would be to free the code he owns, most of it was purchased and has long since paid for itself. The second greatest gift he has would be to simply stop making anti-competitive deals and putting other companies out of business. In other words, if he could quit being a criminal and give the world something new, he might deserve some respect. As it is, Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson are better examples.
Windows Media Center is meant to be a TiVo clone.... the proper mode of operation is to simply avoid rebooting by leaving it always-up.
Next thing you will do is say that it should be connected to the internet!
Windoze is lucky to get more than a day of uptime, especially when you run media applications on it. The only way to run a windoze computer is to turn it off at night so it won't crash and burn as much durring the day and firewall the hell out if it.
You can see where it's going. Using Linux to load an "up" image into RAM and turn control over to it is a great idea. That way, you can be sure the stupid thing booted right when you wake up and go to work. The approach can be used for any situation you need windoze drivers to make your hardware work. Microsoft will, of course, do everything they can to prevent this and anyone dumb enought to still be trying to make things work with them will get burnt.
Agreed. It would have been better had they crammed a LCD into it. The whole point of the original was that it was easy to use and lug around. Additionally, the addition of the DVD was pointless without a screen and not really much use with one. A network card is all you need to get useful infomration on and off any computer, why screw up a face for a soon to be obsolete media? It would have looked much nicer with a screen. A picture of the sigs on the back of the empty box would hae made the perfect wallpaper for a computer that could stand on it's own again. If the built in screen is too small to be usefull, run an X server and tie into it with another computer that has a reasonable screen.
Of course, it's not too late for them to do something like that. The disk drive bay is gone forever, but they could rig up a screen.
Duh, it's Linux that acts like Windows, Lindows, what's wrong with that? No one is going to get confused are they? Lindows does not claim to be from Microsoft. They have claimed some interoperability and ease of use for a Windows user.
