    Kidding aside... Sometimes I look at AP-style written stuff and how most editors spend too much time discouraging the use of too many commas, and it just makes some sentences incomprehensible at first glance.

    In a long ass sentence, using commas is like shaking it out at the urinal. Zero is too few, 3 is too many.

    I'd would rather read a chunk of 5,000 lines of code (obviously, spread out in multiple files or projects as applicable) before I read the details of your college degree. Yeah, when I left my last job, my successor had a degree from a top 25 college, but it was for English! They dragged on the hiring process so long that I didn't get a chance to test the later candidates, because I'd already left. It has turned out that the guy is one expensive disaster.

    By testing, I don't mean giving people a verbal quiz of what the hell they've memorized. God I hate it when companies do that! Yeah, try doing some programming without the internet, help files, books, or other people as references. Anyway, instead of asking for code, I tell them ahead of time that they'd be in for an extra half hour of a written test during the interview process. They could use the web or any books on the shelf at the office. Then give them a couple of problems that might show their thought process more than their ability to find sample code online.

    Man, why do all the topics I want to reply to always show up late in the day ET?

    Have mandatory 'securing your computer' classes at the high school and college levels

    It doesn't even have to be a full semester long class. Just a week or two worth of teaching during whatever mandatory "intro to computer" level course. If it's boring for those that think they know all that, well all the better to pad their grade in that class during this section's test.

    Is there a company that's offering a model with both a solid state drive (for the OS and office apps), as well as a regular HDD (for data)? Sort of the best of both worlds in terms of fast access for most tasks, and enough room to store music (and pron:). Most brands have models that allow for two hard drives, but I haven't found one with one of each.

    Sorry, I couldn't find a good enough search phrase to see if this topic has been mentioned in this thread...

    Obviously, this Sony laptop is built for weight benefits too, but what if that's not as important? I'm more interested in the speed advantages and battery consumption, but don't want to lug around an external drive.

    What if the hackers type "blank"? Or what if they double hit the enter key, trying two passwords: the random one and the nonexistant one.
    Nah, too improbable. We all know hackers are too precise when they type at blazing speeds to ever accidentally hit the enter key twice. They'll keep banging away trying to get the magical "Password Accepted" message. Meanwhile the empty/blank password would be under their noses all that time.

    People like to blame all their problems on MS. You get hacked because your password was "password"? MS's fault. A program you install have a security hole? MS's fault. Someone send you a virus "In order to have your advise"? MS's fault.
    This is why you should change your password to blank! Because according to Hollywood, hackers just slap away randomly at their keyboards to "hack into" a system. Leave it blank and it's sure to keep hackers out.

    Since commercial breaks don't always total to multiples of 30 seconds, I always use fast forward anyway, instead of setting up my Tivo for the "double secret 30 second fast forward" feature.

    So question... does MythTV, which "offers everything Tivo does", do the FF and REW overshoot compensation when you press play? The underrated, once I used it I don't want to be without it anymore, feature that when you fast forward really fast, once you hit play, it rewinds back a few seconds to compensate for your overshooting.

    I often want to believe in that old Clarke quote since it's pretty optimistic, but then a couple of the big ones probably ain't going to shift from magic to technology. Like time travel (the cliched Time Machine / Back to the Future version), and practical faster than light travel.

    Well, maybe virtualization, NAS devices, and smartphones will offset some of this. Some companies I've been at don't have server rooms filled to the max with actual physical servers, like say 5 years ago. Every task doesn't necessarily need one full computer dedicated to it anymore (not like it's news to anyone here).

    Along that line of cross promotion, it's not crazy to think that the following SAT analogy can be used:

    Amazon is to Best Buy as iTunes is to Tower Records.

    Apple better start working on offering tools, baby clothes, books, and jewelry. Because it won't happen quickly, but if done right, Amazon can "Best Buy" the hell out of iTunes. Offer 192Kbps MP3s for $0.49. What the hell is the difference? Amazon just wants you to go to their site and buy higher margin stuff.

    I have no problem with product placement (or what I call "inline" ads). They don't often detract from the show, and when they do, the show isn't usually worth watching. They also don't waste my time. They're usually an on-topic advertisement for a product I might actually use I don't mind product placement for the most part either. And prefer it to commercial breaks, and sometimes prefer it to no product placement. Really! I hate seeing a bunch of people drinking "soda" brand soda or "beer" brand beer on a show. I always hated how Seinfeld episodes made up some of the most ridiculous names for fake movies that they'd go to. Of course if they switch totally to product placement because more vocal people are like me, they'll find some way to make it annoying.

    There's plenty of Google services that could be rolled out into China. It's a market of over 1 billion people, and they certainly don't want to screw this up. Is Gmail even available there yet? How many of those 1 billion people are useful as consumers, I wonder?
