  1. What about the record companies? on Elton John Says Internet is Destroying Music · · Score: 1

They are the guys that fuck people over royally, not the internet, nor the people on it. Try to explain creativity to people who *only* care for the mighty $$$...

The internet has the possibility of setting music free, and for artists to find new nice ways of making a living, without record companies. Is that what old artists and record companies find so horrific about the internet? That they are *gasp* being replaced? Or can it be that the biggest myspace page isn't /SirEltonJohn ?

It is what people do, not what the "internet" do...

  2. If Linux sucks on the desktop on Torvalds Explains Scheduler Decision · · Score: 3, Insightful

Start profiling the damn thing! Write performance tests, good ones, write really evil stress tests, stress the crap out of it, and then you will know what is *wrong*. Might not be the kernel at all, in fact, I think that a lot will be because of applications (always a huge source for problems), the UI/Graphics subsystem (again, huge source for trouble, X11, drivers, UI toolkits, they all tend to be far from perfect) and such.

But pissing and moaning won't do you any good. At least Con did try to write stuff, but not being a professional software engineer hurt his efforts I'm assuming. The guy would probably make a good technical manager though. It is a shame he felt he had to quit, it would have been much better if he could have gotten a few other kernel hackers on with him to go on. I think he ended up with a lot of users backing him, but no coders :(

Not that I am a Linux person, but I always find it sad to see people who are really into something quitting for bad reasons (bad in the sense that the shouldn't have to, not that he did something unwise).

When can I buy a Wifi phone without an OS? And then put whatever is out there on it? Perhaps... a linux distro with hardware support? THEN it would be a heck of a lot more interesting. Because whether or not they breach the license or not won't change anyone but the lawyers lives. I hardly think that anything in that skype phone is worth getting back to be honest.

I want an open piece of hardware, because I quite frankly don't care about 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, nor any-freakin'-G. I want Wifi, only, and sensible sync and everything else.

Or they can just throw GSM/whatever-G out of the iPhone and fill it up with WiFi software instead of what you get from GSM (Call, SMS). That would work outside of the US, without the need to crack it, and make me happy :)

Well, that's it, read up and then maybe we can get some more interesting Slashdot postings about new computers:)

  9. None! on Any "Pretty" Code Out There? · · Score: 1

Because a fairly good developer can never really comprehend the idea of good design, and there are far more crappy developers out there than good ones, and great ones, not many at all. It takes discipline and talent to produce good design and without it you will be lost, no chance of recovery, sorry.

That being said I've heard very good words about llvm (www.llvm.org) so go check that out if you are interested in possibly good code.

Design is really the key here, changing development methodologies, programming languages, or whatever won't buy you good design. Too bad today's tools for design is HORRIBLE :(

  11. But seriously... on iPhone Battery Replacement An Unwelcome Surprise · · Score: 1

I have never, even once, needed to replace a better on a mobile phone, nor have I never bothered to use extra ones since the charge on them is good enough. Is this really, truly, a problem for people? Besides, $80 or whatever for a device that will set you back $499 - $599 plus 24 x $59.99. That's like up to around $2000, plus any other extras you buy and use and whatnot. Is the difference between $2000 and $2080 that high?

There are way too many people out there who wants to hate the iPhone because it is not specially made for them (as if any other phone was...) and makes up these completely stupid stories about absolutely nothing. Do not buy the iPhone if you do not like it. Let the number of devices sold speak instead, OK?

  12. The government tries to do too much on TorrentSpy Ordered By Judge to Become MPAA Spy · · Score: 4, Insightful

The government has no reason to care about the whole IP debacle really. What it really is a question of is an old industry with awfully rich people in charge (don't give me crap about starving artists, the fat cats that took their money in the first place could starting paying it back...) that has grown accustomed to ripping artists and consumers alike off. Music survived an awful long time before the RIAA, and so did acting before MPAA. It is a transition, which no government should interfere with. The industry and the artist and consumers alike must find a new balance. I've heard that people pay to listen to live music for instance, maybe that is how music should pay the bills, not recordings of it? Who knows but the future.

What the government *SHOULD* interfere with is price fixing, Mafia tactics, scare tactics, extortion, invading of privacy, breaking the law, etc. Which these bloody people are doing all the time. This what is getting to me, why should any government on earth be allowed to persecute individuals the way RIAA/MPAA and their friends are doing. I do not live in the US, but please please, everyone, do read this Wikipedia entry and really think about what it says. If what the RIAA/MPAA is doing isn't cruel and unusual, nothing else. When beating and raping people is seen as a lesser crime than copying certain combinations of 1s and 0s, this are both cruel, and soon getting all to usual!

    1. Convenience. I can watch it when I want, where I want, with no commercials or similar horrors.
    2. Quality. TV/iTunes just doesn't cut it. I want full widescreen 720/1080 HDTV with full quality surround and top notch bitrate choices (I'll pay the double for 2x the bitrate).
    (3. Price)

Ever heard of, if you can't beat them, join them? I'd hire the big boys in torrent/ftp to run my systems instead of trying to give them jailtime. 23. Does language matter? on How Do You Know Your Code is Secure? · · Score: 2, Interesting

In this case it doesn't in one important way. Programming is the same regardless of language, since humans are the same regardless of language. What you need to write good software (again, why just secure? Why focus on a certain aspect, why not just generalize?) is skills/knowledge and good habits. My best advice here is to make sure you give yourself good coding habits. Don't say things like "I'll clean that up later" or "I will add error checks later" or something equally damaging. Give yourself good, sensible, habits and follow them. Any average programmer must know what buffer overflow means, and how to correct it. You can't even be an average programmer unless you know. So why is such insecure code written in C/C++ then? My thinking is plain mistakes and bad habits.
