  1. Isn't there a point to being unique? on Statistically Optimal Music · · Score: 1

All the great ones has done something new. Maybe not something completely new (all the notes has been hit before;)), but never the less not what the rest was doing. We have the king, beatles, and then all the waves, such as rap, punk, grunge, NWBHM (let's see if anyone knows that one), etc.

This reminds me of what happened when Beatles hit it big and all of a sudden if you showed up with two guitars the labels hired you...

But then again, not much of the new music comming out is worth listening to, horrible mixes (my ears tire, and I don't have good music ears), bland, homogenus. I don't want to be bored nor shocked, I want to be entertained.

  2. icc or gcc? on Fastest US Supercomputer Runs Linux · · Score: 1

I wonder if the important software is compiled with icc or gcc. I guess it could be fortran code (apparently popular still;)) and then icc should shine even more. IA64 is not the easiest CPU to make a good compiler for.

All the FSF nerds would scream their heads off, but I would like to see a scientific release of linux, compiled with iNTELS compilers and set up and optimized only to crunch the numbers (and anything needed because of that. Slow disk access surely can't be a good thing for instance, while desktop smoothness isn't worth it).

  4. I know where this leads... on Florida Proposes Taxing Local LANs · · Score: 1

I live in the country of the million taxes (Sweden) and the idea of adding more and more taxes with more and more rules is counter productive.

The reason for taxes is to bring money into the state (or whatever it might be called locally) so that the state can service the public (police, fire fighters, hopefully health care). That is good taxes, taxes most people don't mind when they sit down and think (since they can't pay for all those services alone anyways).

The problem when you start using taxes to push certain agendas (oh, are they making too much money that we should make? Let's lobby up a new stupid tax!) that aren't in the public's interest (more tax on tobaco makes sense since it strains the health care, for instance) is that you end up with a very unstable system. Just look at how many new freakin' tax laws that pop up constantly. Every year when I make my taxes something has changed, I wouldn't want to make the taxes for a large cooperation.

So since I am a whiney bastard, what should be done then huh? Well, look at this proposed tax. It is not an especially clear one (give us 1/3 of your income is a clear tax) and it will more than likely be hard to control (Yes, let's have the FBI chase companies with too much CAT 5, ok? It's not like they have their hands filled with anything right now huh?), which makes it a bad tax. So simply put a bunch of smart people in a room and find out what simple rules of taxation could be used, and enforce them. Won't ever happen, but it would solve the whole thing.

Another nice thing would be to get rid of paper money and only use "virtual" money (i.e. debit cards). Much easier to track what is going on, since you have a history. And only people trying to break the law (buying narcotics, arms, smuggling people, money, terrorists, and Mac users (joke)) would have any trouble.

I am quite sure that preserving ones cultural heritage must go over IP and patents. I can't claim that I want to preserve my hertiage by pirating a copy of Doom 3 (when it is released), but I sure can with a game that nobody takes care of anymore. It would be different if there was a company who lived on these games.

Something equal to the library of congress (I hope I got that one right) should be created for digital games. And not just the game but the blueprints/source code as well.

  12. Not the GUI that is the problem on Windows XP Edges Out KDE in Usability Test · · Score: 2, Interesting

The KDE GUI is just fine by now, more or less at least (I still can't stand X), but the real problem is the integration with the underlaying OS, especially since it can be different OSes and different Linux distributions (which does thing differently for no good reason at all).

An example, it took me 10 seconds in 1995 to figure out how to share a folder in win95, but after almost an hour I gave up on getting samba to share properly in gentoo. I have a fair amount of Linux experience, and would count myself as knowing quite a lot about computers (I'm a software engineer), but I have no intention of learning all about smb just for getting a few files over.

That is the problem with KDE, that is the problem for Linux, if you want to make it an easy to use system for ordinary people (if you want to make it a geek system that's never really finish, well, it's there;)).

A very valid question. There isn't much actual need for ogg right now. Even though 128kbps mp3s don't sound good, it is good enough for what most people listen to, their equipment, and their ears. It's the same with DD and DTS (Every DVD I have with DD and DTS sounds better in DTS, and I don't have neither good ears nor good equipment). I personally would want very high bitrate oggs with 24-bit/96khz. This would put it above CD quality, which is the minimum of what I want.

But ogg was on the other hand developed just for what iTunes and buymusic is doing, so I am curious of why the people who shelled out the money (few of us are rich enough to develop software for nothing to make other profit from) aren't trying to make use of their investment and spreading the use of ogg.

Ogg the format is good, the support for it sucks. Ask the ogg people why.

I like iTunes, it is good. My only concern there would be possible players for AAC, but I am sure it will be fixed. The best would be if iTunes for windows will make it possible to download the AAC to an iPod as well (I am under the impression that you will have to have a mac for that right now).

The biggest reason I care ogg is for the lack of patents etc.

  17. Re:I won't EVER be buying music from BuyMusic.... on DirectX Flaw Leaves Windows Vulnerable · · Score: 2, Interesting

It is simply not worth it. You only lease it (can they even stop you from listening to them songs at their whim?), you get it in WMA (Why?) probably with some DRM slapped on.

If I buy a CD (which I won't, because they are too expensive nowdays, I own about 600 of them thus far though) I can play it in my computer (technically my old stereo), in my surround system, in my car, in mine or my girlfriends portable CD player, at work, or at a friends place.

If I could buy the music legally in high quality ogg format, and then put it whereever I want (except trading to people) I would be happy. Very much so even. It would appeal to my sense of fairness (yes they made the music, I should pay them and not pirate) and my laziness (*burn* and it goes into the car).

Hell, wasn't OGG even made just for this? When are they going to stop thinking about the tech stuff and give ogg some more uses than for us hackers?

On another note, I have patched all the windows computers I use before this story came on slashdot and I don't find this worse than a new Linux kernel corrupting the filesystem. This is a piece of non news!

First, I can't remember if it is 3:2 or 2:3, someone feel free to correct me;)

Second of all, it is very irritating to see 24fps material be shown as 30fps. It becomes far from smooth. So I still wonder why nobody has thought of (and done something about it) outputting 72/75/90hz (24/PAL/NTSC) scaled up digital progressive video from a DVD player. You can make use of the motion hints for making the frames inbetween look better (and not just reproducing them) and it would look much better on good and fast high definition displays (such as DLP projectors for instance).

But alas, it will only be a dream until one does it oneself I guess:)
