I don't think that the US does want to nuke anyone. The problem is that the someone else might want to start nuking people if the US didn't have nukes. It would be difficult to dissuade them them if there is no deterrent in place and their "god" tells them to do it.

I know for a fact that Universal optioned the rights to this book. Unfortunately, Paramount had entered post-production for Echo: The Movie! so I don't think that Universal are going to pursue it. As long as it stays true to the dark themes of the original, I don't care what file command movie gets made. If it's a origins story, we'll probably get to see Edlin. Kevin Spacey, anyone?

I think what we're highlighting is how divisive the franchise is, like the James Bond series. For me, TNG S3-7 is my favourite. Closely followed by the films. Closely followed by some TOS and Enterprise (particularly S3+S4). It's my gut that Voy is probably the most heavily criticised amongst fans, but even that did well enough in the ratings to sustain three series.

It's nice to see some sensible, non AC comments on this thread. Basically, some companies get a lot of money from giving away other people's content for free. When they get called on it, they don a Robin Hood costume. If the artists themselves want to give away their stuff for free, they can.

The articles themselves are still there by direct reference. I wonder how long that content will remain though? I for one hope that they start commissioning articles again as they took a couple of mine. In general, the magazine style article content at Linux.com had something of a following. The snag is that they either have to pay for content or solicit for unpaid and hope for the best.

  13. Re:Piggy ride! on Small Asteroid To Buzz Earth · · Score: 0

Surely the asteroid has considerable inertia due to its mass? A probe would have to apply thrust to overcome gravity wells that it encounters. The asteroid will be affected by the "drag" of passing close to large bodies but already has considerable ineria.

Let's say that I sent a ping pong ball, a house brick, and a 20t lump of iron heading away from earth at 5 m/s. I would expect the ping pong ball to slow most quickly, followed by the house brick. In some situations, the lump of iron might be able to escape where the others would not. You'd experience the same effect if you tried to stop a car rolling down hill a ten miles per hour and then compared it to stopping a skate board moving at the same speed. Perhaps I'm missing something?

In addition, a probe on top of an asteroid benefits from at least some protection from collisions.

I'd like to find out the full story as this sounds suspicious. IMO, if she added a note to her profile that she's a lesbian and was subsequently banned, they have treated her unfairly. If that's the case, the people who carried out the banning may well have broken the law. She'd certainly have my support, for one.

However, for all we know, she could have been causing trouble and getting into arguments with people over other issues. The linked report doesn't go into much detail other than her claim that she was banned for mentioning that she was a lesbian. I'd like to see some evidence, either way.
