Wrong. that goes against what Microsoft said when 2k was released. They released Me at the same time. Me was for home use, and 2k was for business use. Me failed so bad, and Windows 2000 was so good in comparison, that people were buying it of the shelf and replacing their Me with it, or sticking with 98SE. I remember when it was a bitch to get drivers for a lot of peripherals, because of the fact that 2000 was NT 5.0. It wasn't till a year after its release that it opened up.
XP was Microsoft's merger of the home and office OS's into one platform, based on the stable 5.0 kernel. The ONLY difference between Home and Professional are the bells and whistles. They are both the same system. Windows 7 is comparable to Vista in the same way as 2k and XP, except that, for the first time since Win 2k, we actually have an improved OS from the last release. as far as system stability is concerned, it's the only one I'd compare with 2k.
I'll listen to an UNBIASED analysis on this matter, not a partisan Groklaw writer who doesn't really "grok" what the case was about. Worried about your myspace being hacked? Here's an idea for you: don't use it! Try getting out and socializing in the flesh! If that 13 year old didn't live on myspace so much(where was her mother?), the mother wouldn't have had such an upper hand.
Yay to the dumbest generation.
Yeah, without the "eye candy", what is the point of getting Vista when you can get XP, which is more secure(sadly), or linux, which is more secure and free? If you have to turn off features of the OS to get it to work, guess what? It isn't working well.
I think it might be this: they have no problem with you using and modifying their software. They just don't want you to use the Mozilla or Firefox trademark after you do so. Once you have modified it, it isn't the same product, and they don't want their name associated with it.
I think it's just DRM as far as the trademark is concerned, which they have every right to do. So all the over-reactions need to chill a bit. As long as they keep the software free to use and modify, there isn't an issue.
Well, other than the title, remember when M$ had all those ads stating "London Exchange using MS Exchange!" You know, the stupid one on computer websites showing a guy running around in the press room with the new big headline? I guess they should have stayed quiet on that one.
Yeah, the CD is healthy. That must explain the drop-off rate of CD sales last year, 20% according to some estimates. The record is actually seeing a revival, as no digital format, due to its nature, can create a continuous sound wave like a record. It's only attraction was volume and portability, both of which were surpassed by mp3's. You can get the same or better sound quality on an mp3, as well; and with the storage space of these players rising, you can fit a high volume of 256k mp3's.
Between the resurgence of clarity in LP's for the audiophile, and the quality and portability of mp3's, you can write off cd's in about 5 years.
Yeah, I could hear the Fonz revving up for the shark tank when Lucas released the "improved" versions of the first movies. Everything since has just been another nail in the coffin. At least WB got smart and restarted Batman with quality acting and directing after the "nipple suit" movies.
Yes, we have this problem in the US. Don't even try to say that it is near the surveillance and intrusion in China. At least here, you can change the process with your vote. Some intrusion is expected, for safety or criminal activity. It's another to limit sites you can access and throw someone in prison for blogging about the government
Methinks you need to renew your Chinese passport, friend.
Fine. If the New York Times wants to give out that information, Steve Jobs can give it out...the same time the editor in chief of the Times gives out his own medical information. Stock holders want this accountability from their head? Why can't Jobs require them to give theirs? After all, they own the stock. They have some control of who owns the company. Don't Jobs and the board have the right to know the health of their investors?
Of course not. Eisenhower was out of action for months towards the end of his term due to illness. It was to the point that, for as long as a year, Nixon was unofficially running the country. Hell, there are times when we don't know if Cheney, the #2 in line for the presidency, is alive or dead! Knowing where he is is like playing "Where's Waldo?". Remember, as said many times, Jobs is a private citizen. You need to demonstrate without reasonable doubt, that his health is affecting his performance as CEO, before you can launch such an investigation. Considering the performance of Apple(highest % market share since the days of the Apple II, 3G iPhone, OSX, controlling interest in Disney), I think they should quit their bitching and think of what it was like WITHOUT Jobs at the helm.
Erm, maybe they were too busy with a marathon drum circle. Or maybe, they had an Ultimate Tournament to go to....dude!
Stupid hippies. It's easy to protest, but too hard for them to go through the legal effort or expense to defend their rights.
If I were hiring, the primary thing I'd look for is practical experience. A guy with an associates and 5 years IT experience will kick the ass of any fresh graduate with no experience with handling a network.
Tech schools have the advantage of being looked at by companies interested in their tech grads. Most of the time you will get practical knowledge at these schools you won't get at a LA college. If you are serious about a career in this field, go with a tech school. If you like taking four classes of Humanities(a usual requirement at LA schools) and never miss Bonaroo, then by all means, go to the LA college.
A big problem with everyone who complains about Linux is the fact that you are the installer, whereas most people who run Windows got it on their computer, which means it is all set up for everything on it. I would be more into a comparison of a Dell Inspiron with the Ubuntu pre-install against one with Vista. This would be a fair comparison.
The comp was $200 dollars, and sold in Wal-Mart. Don't make a big deal about it. Concentrated on the pre-installs from Lenovo, Dell, Asus and HP.
Personally, I have no problem with retards using youtube for their "wast medical knowledge. Maybe it will catch on, and less of these retards will have kids who live past the age of three before they die of mumps, measles, rubela, the common flu, cervicle/throat cancer from HPV(which is common among 50% of Americans 18-35), whooping cough, and a host of other illnesses for which there is preventative medicine.
I'm sure there are hundreds of millions of people in Africa who gaze in disbelief that we turn down these modern miracles, which aren't even available to most of them. They would probably say, "Hey! Send those vaccines here! At least let my child live past the age of five!"
Don't correct these asshats, and let nature take its course. When their children die, one less tree of ignorance has a chance to grow.
The saddest thing is, after almost 7 years between XP and Vista, Vista is still as screwed up as it is. Now they say, "Well, we'll have it all set by SP2." Nice. WTF were they doing in the 6+ years of development and beta? Face it, the last decent OS out of that company was W2K. It's the last MS I had no issues with from day 1.
Oh, and I love how that thread of condescension was strewn through each answer he gave. If I were that lady, I would have kicked him in the balls. Now THAT would be a good vid!
It's yet another example of a different mindset in Japanese corporations and governments than the US. First, even corporations look to what can benefit their own country above others, something lacking in our own. Second, if you can't prove in a memo or Power Point slide how something will be profitable in 2-3 years, US companies don't want to listen. Japanese, Korean, and now Chinese, companies have that long view. They know that Fiberoptic networking will create greater efficiency throughout the country, and, in the long run, benefit all. American Telecoms are all worried about defending their own turf and preventing others from profiting. Look at the fights Google has had over wifi. There is no profit to setting up here, because they would have to fight our Jingoistic policies toward foreign corporations, and Congress is well-known for taking a great idea and fucking it up. We look out for number 1. They look out for everyone. We've seen in the auto and computer industry how that works in the long run. I swear, in 50 years Tokyo will be like The Jetsons and we'll be the Flintstones.
You gotta hand it to the AT&T lawyers for knowing what the government and the people will put up with. Personally, I have Charter running the cables here and Verizon, always ranked #1 in customer service, as a cell provider. Maybe people should use that as a measure of what phone they get, instead of what Paris Hilton or Steve (hand)Jobs is peddling.
What do you call 3500 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start.
-Unknown-
Hang all the lawyers!
-William Shakespeare-
Don't worry, though. According to Marx, Hyper-Capitalism is followed by Socialism, then Communism. Look at Europe. They are mostly in the socialist phase. The US just tends to be a bit slower than everyone else. C'mon, we look at Forrest Gump as a hero!
Remember when Windows Me was supposed to be the next step for home users? Most people ended up staying on Windows 2000 or Windows 98 after they found out what a steaming pile Me was.
Seems the same is happening to Vista. After 5 years of debugging, XP works pretty much the way it should, and no one wants to switch to yet another M$ product which is 3 years of development away from being prime-time.
They reached their peak with Windows 2000. Maybe they should have taken the lessons learned from that: make an OS that just works.
Would you like to comment on the actual review? Someone who starts a sentence with, "Jesus fuck", has little leeway to criticize another person's writing style. Besides, only an English major would comment on the diction of a gaming blogger.
If you are an English Major....how's that serving job at Chili's?
There is only one change that matters for a cell phone: dump AT+T.
Verizon and All-Tel are rated #1 in customer satisfaction every year, and what does Jobs do? Go with the company rated LAST in customer satisfaction. With that choice, he made a statement about his touch with consumers: it's gone.
I'd check the fine print on your warranty, but if it's like most, if you modify the base system in any way, it's invalid. It shouldn't be, because how the hell did Linux cause a crack to form on the comp. Most computer places wouldn't care and would fix it. I know at Best Buy they could care less. Do what others said. Make sure others see what kind of store PC World in England is. Ultimately, it's gonna cost them a lot more to refuse service.
This is, of course, why many of those who are gifted go into solitary professions. The IT industry opened up opportunities for jobs in which you could use intelligence to design and produce hardware/software and be rewarded for the quality you produced, not just how many widgets you made in a day. It also gave us a chance to challenge ourselves, not to rely on some structured system to delegate at what pace we could excel.
In Europe and Japan, after a certain year they figure out by intelligence and aptitude what secondary education will be best for your interests and abilities. I understand they do it by the 8th or 9th year of school. You either go into the university track, or you go to a vocational system. They figure, why send someone through a four-year system that they either don't need or aren't up to in performing. Of course, our 4 year system has started suffering the same "dumbing down" that our schools have, so we don't offend the political correctness of everyone being "special".
Remember the line from Jack Black in The Incredibles:
"...and when everybody is special, no one will be special."

Think about this:
The video industry was a niche market until Porn started getting involved. Now we have Blockbuster.
The internet was a home for geeks and scientists. Porn took an interest. Now it's our primary source of everything but food and water
The space industry is a niche for the very rich entrepreneur...
See where I'm going with this? SPACE NEEDS PORN!
"Houston, I have a problem."
"Well, I got the solution, baby." Cue wah-wah peddle guitar.
I think this thread may be rated M.
