I think the French have just shot themselves in the foot with this. Rather than release the source code, most companies will cease to do business with the French government. Somehow I just can't see Microsoft opening up the source code to Windows just to capture the prestigous French OS market.
While Linux may or may not be an acceptable alternative to Windows for the French, I'm wondering what'll happen when they can't use programs that they're used to.
Actually, what the goverment should ban are those porn sites where when you close one window, three more pop up. When you try to close one of those, another one pops up in its place. Its like some wierd, online version of the Whack-a-Mole game. I would strongly vote for any Congressman who would burn the heads of these Hydra-like sites.
I am going to hide out in my Fuhrer Bunker in Montana until the Zionist Real Player and its Cliton-loving allies are defeated. Bo Gritz explained to me how Real Player is all a front for the Trilateralists.
"Oh, although I love Neal Stephenson, because its going to be broadcast in Real Media I'm going to bitch and complain."
Personally, if this thing was broadcast by Navajo Code Talkers I'd be happy. Neal Stephenson is an amazing author; one of the true visionaries of sci-fi. Rather than endlessly complain about the format of the talk, just accept it and be happy that we get to listen to him speak. Yeah, Real Player is proprietary and NON-OPEN SOURCED. But you know something...its not that terrible of a player.
I suppose it could've been broadcast in a Windows Media Player format.
Don't let quibbles over the format ruin what sounds like a great interview!
Okay, I know I'm in the minority here, but I really hated Brazil. I've seen it several times over the years, and it just never grew on me. Its odd because I like Terry Gilliam's work: the Monty Python movies, Time Bandits(!), Fisher King, etc.
I'm certain that part of my dislike for this movie comes because the first time I saw it was right after studying the book 1984 in high school. After beating that book to death for a few weeks, Brazil probably wasn't the best choice for a movie.
Of course, not all of my dislike for this movie can be pinned on an over-zealous sophmore English teacher. I can't quite put my finger on it, but this movie just irritated me like hot grits down my pants.
According to my psychic friend, Dione Warwick herself, in my past lives not only was I Cleopatra, but also Genghis Khan, Leonardo Da Vinca and Thomas Jefferson. Imagine my suprise to realize that I was all those people! I guess that I spend this life pumping gas at the Stop-N-Fuel is meant to balance out all the great people I've been.
Personally, I am deeply offended that Slashdot does not recognize the validity of psychics. I mean, for only $4.99/min I discovered who my ancestors are, plus I found out that my g/f was possibly cheating on me and a long trip is in my future!
Now moderate this up before I pour hot grits down your pants, sailor!
Yeah, HS sucked big for geeks, but, like, fuck...I didn't go out and unload a gun on my classmates or anything. Those two kids were nuts. I worry that Katz' book is going to imply that ALL geeks == psychos, and thus reinforce the backlash against kids wearing KMFDM T-shirts and such.
I absolutely have to disagree with this post. Fanfic is neither "rude" nor "theft". By writing a story based on Star Trek, the X-Files or whatever, how am I taking something away from the owners of the copyrights?
Since I'm not making money off it, I'm not stealing. Additionally, the reader base for fanfic is lilliputian compared to material published through the larger media outlets.
Furthermore, the legality of fanfic seems to be in favor of the authors. The Slate article discussed how fanfic most likely falls under "fair-use" laws.
So I think its safe to say fanfic is not theft, nor illegal.
ERS told me that if I used "Netscape engineers are weenies" as a password, I could crack into any QNX system. He said something about an intentional backdoor....
But because your example was open-sourced, the login.c backdoor was caught. Had it been close-sourced, I doubt it would've ever been caught. So again, open source is more secure then closed-source, as ESR observed.
Lars, the drummer of Metallica, is quoted by MSNBC as saying:
"It is therefore sickening to know that our art is being traded like a commodity rather than the art that it is."
But aren't Metallica the ones who began treating their music like a commodity by SELLING their CDs for a sizeable profit and doing the same with concert tickets. Not only are Metallica on very questionable legal ground with this, but they are extremely hypocritical.
I always thought Metallica was over-rated-Judas-Priest-wannabes, but now I know it!!

True, us Brits haven't put a man in space yet; but we have had a woman in space, though...
Pointing out the origins of Margaret Thatcher doesn't really count, though.
I don't see what the big deal about this is. They *were* stealing access. Other students had to pay for it, but these students decided not to. Its analogous to stealing cable. Admitedly, its not the same as swipping hardware from the IT labs. But its still theft. Of course, this brings up the horrible state of OSU's Internet service for its students. I think thats an equally large crime.
I know this is just a pipedream, but it would be nice if whomever stole the laptop put the encrypted data on the net. Then we all could try cracking it, a la the RC5 project (I'm probably getting the name wrong. Correct me if I am.) It would be interesting to peer behind the curtains at the machinations of the British government.
Okay, _someone_ is going to ask this, so why not me: If you were casting the roles, who would play the characters? I'm having a hard time thinking of them, mostly because I don't know any young Asian actors for the role of Hiro, old menacing looking Eskimos, or any hot little 14 year olds now that Natalie Portman is done. So...who would you cast?
How dare you mock such a great man! This man has tirelessly devoted his life to providing humankind with, at a minimum, free energy. And all you can do is scorn him!
Why is this?
I hear people demanding "peer review" and scorn is heaped because its not been given. Well, my spiteful readers, of course its not been subjected to peer review. I mean, my God! Were such technology released, it would no doubt be stolen... just like my temporal-induction-field generation was taken from me by the Dept of Agriculture (a bootlick to the CIA) before I could send myself into the past to warn people.
I'm sure that this great scientist is just guarding his discovery until he can release it, without fear of reprisal from our government, the same government that, through its German minions in the GSG9 implanted a monitoring device in my head and has been stealing my thoughts for years.
We need to rally around this discovery! Its clear that this man is no more crazy than I!
Actually, if the Russian poet had any sense, he'd file a lawsuit in the US. The US publisher would have to abide by American copyright laws.

Whats the advantage, besides speed, of using Firewire over Ethernet?

Uhh...I don't think the US Supreme Court has a lot of influence in France.
Oh those kooky, crazy French!!
How exactly do I use Wrapster, anyways? The help file was pretty sparse.

Just wondering if there is a copy of the Arthur C. Clarke story online anywhere. Its one of the few works of the Master that I have not yet read.
