    I think it's cool that a Linux distro can take down even the bigest ftp servers. Readhat has quite a few users, it's probably alot of people downloading right now.

    As I see it it's just another redhat *.0 version. I wait 6 month for 8.1

    Are you sure MS wants to release bugfree secure code. It's important for them that there users upgrade to the next big thing. More stable more secure more in kernelspace.

    Half a year ago I bought a Mandrake distro only because it's too cheap to Linux (the companies don't make enough cash).

    Have never installed it. I don't like Mandrake Linux, but they have a great distro for newbies I hear and I thought they could use some money.

    I think others should do the same or similiar. Possibly by supporting single open source projects or buy a distro.

    Redhat for example ships with DVD and credit card rescue CD which is also added value from downloading. Support your distro.

    Yes, Linux 8 is definitely on the horizon.. of jupiter.

    And Linux as a name is about ten times more widespread than redhat. I don't think this will do anyone any harm, except redhat users prefering KDE.

    Since most websites are apache on unix anyway they can't choose passport. And open source generaly is quite well respected these days.

    The difference is X vs Aqua. As always. I prefer X. Other prefer Aqua. I know darwin can run X, but I see no point in it. Linux is mature.

    The hardest thing for me to swith arcitecture is that I run quite a few closed source games (including wine), which wouldn't work at all on Linux "anything but X86". So it would probably have to wait, who knows what the future brings.

    And how would anyone know if windows is stable these days. Most of us got sick and tired of it seven years ago. After having tried it for two weeks, that is.

    One thing I found very funny is that the loosers out there waited close to ten years for windows to become stable. I guess stability isn't "high priority" for MS customers.

    Of course we are still only talking stable enough for home/office use. Having "some" load on IIS still resulted in one reboot a day in our tests. Quite good actully.. NT4 was more like once an hour. But stable windows servers is probably just hard to set up I guess, I'm probably just stupid or something. It's funny how easy it is to make most Unixes stable. You don't have to do anything really.

    802.11b is plauged by bad (as in broken) encryption making it easy to sniff. Don't know if there is another encryption standard yet. Most hardware offer other encryption but I don't think they speak well together. This is probably one major reason why it has not took of more.

    As it is now you could use it but you have to trust your wireless net as much as you trust the internet, which means heavy firewalling.

    You just took up the number one reason I don't like OSX. It comes with a non portable GUI.

    As a Linux programmer all my apps should work on OSX, thats ok. It's not ok when the macers don't give there work back to the Unix community.

    I mean. Half of OSX is Open source software. Apple can't even get there stinkin mediaplayer running on other unixes, and not there GUI. When they do. I might change oppinion. Until they do I stick with a standard *nix such as Linux.

    Sure, they have an open source kernel. But we already have a couple of great kernels with much driver support etc, darwin outside of OSX is still mucho rare. There work on GCC is probably good for the community though. But it's not enough at all.

    No, the hardware doesn't last longer. I'm happily running Linux on a P75 as a router at home. I have a copule of P133 and P166 running not so complicated tasks at work. I don't know where you got that statement but it keeps comming up from the mac camp. Do you think X86 hardware magically dissapear one day or something?

    xboxonline.com(tm) is reporting that the most common hardware change in a Windows XP box is the reset button closely followed by the ctrl/alt/del keys.

    Can you explain that?

    but what kills linux (for the newcomer) is the overabundance of choice! Abiword, Kword, OpenOffice, StarOffice, Applix (if they are still around). Pick one!


    We have already seen what "picking one" can do to the office suites. Incompatible fileformats. Hard to transfer beetween one prog and another. Hard/Impossible to get into the market. I for one would not want this to spread this idea to Linux/Unix/BSD.

    Competition and compability before features I say.
    Yes, sometimes it takes longer to evolve into something good and really usable, I buy that. But in the end it works better.

    This is not only funny but in the context also insighfull. I mean, now you can actully patent stuff that "can" be performed by AI. Without any specification whatsoever (or very vauge).

    Let's patent the "AI get beer from fridge" quick before someone else does.

    It would be funny if someone come up with a human robot (a robot that can do pretty much the same thing as a human) before this patent ends. The robot could walk the dog and get the beer. But if it is going to IM for you, you get a call from these guys.

    No, I don't think many people will use this either but it's surely a showcase for mozilla technology. And that might be stuff that matters.

    Trust me, if/when Linux has it's day, it'll have it's share of security related issues as well.


    Linux already has it's share of security related issues and they are handled very proffessinally and mature whenever they come.

    On Linux there is no need to first call the issue a feature, then right out denying that there is an issue, then say that it is too hard to exploit and 6 month later get a fix anyway.

    Thats why we like Linux and Open Source.
