This may be in your country, at least in sweden it's pretty much impossible to buy a TV set not capable of at least 720p. Most people I know already have at least 720p.
They are indeed still expensive
Expensive compared to what? Have you managed to find a non HDTV on sale somewhere. Are you sure that wasn't a firesale.
, but more importantly, they don't really offer anything that people need or want. The difference between standard TV and HDTV is just not large enough for people to actually care about.
Sure, and upscaled DVDs looks as good as blueray also. Have you ever seen HDTV material? It's very easy to see the difference. Even my GF complains about the picture when there is a good movie to watch and we only bought the DVD, the blueray was sold out when we bought the latest Narnia. If you're used to HD material DVD looks like shit, no definition at all.
Go download some Trailers to see what all the fuzz is about.
Because the keyboard is ten times faster than a pen? Even a really small keyboard is still faster than a pen. When it comes to editing there is no contest at all.
The idea of an open source mobile OS is a neat one in theory, but in practice it's just not that simple. The potential for exploits is huge, and with very severe consequences. The way Apple has locked down the iPhone may look draconian, but it also protects its users from all kinds of stuff you really don't want to worry about on your phone.
As taken from the DRM lovers textbook. OSS software has been on unsecure networks for decades and if anything it's been more secure than the locked down stuff.
Nvidia still is the way to go if you want a card that works really good today. I've been using Nvidia cards like forever but now I decided to go ATI for my latest (I want to support the OSS frendliness of AMD/ATI). I bought a 4850 card. Works pretty good, but not nearly as good as Nvidia cards. No OpenGL in wine, no workspace switching when using fullscreen OpenGL apps and some other things. UT2004 works very nice though, 1680x1050 4xAA.
Can you imagine the shitstorm of a comment thread that would result from this exact same thing being the result of MS's doing?
So what. Why would I care about a shitstrom of comments on slashdot.
My point was that there would be no security hole on these computers if Apple didn't go to great lengths to install Safari on them in the first place. And thats the big issue here. I consider all software insecure, if you don't need it you shouldn't have it on your computer.
You mean like, MS should give you guidelines on what you should and should not do with your PC?
No, I was talking about developer guidelines. I thought that was pretty clear, but apparently not.
The security issues isn't the real problem here, all software has them from time to time. I'm sure there will be an update soon. But the real problem is Apple pushing unrelated software to people who bought an iPod. They need to stop doing that now.
Windows is a free for all platform, companies decide by themselves how pushy they can be. And Apple has crossed the line by a wide margin.
MS should have better guidelines, and an integrated updater for third party software. Only then will moves like this be resolved.
Ultraportables was luxury before the EEE pc came along. Now everyone can own one. That is the main advantage. I've used computers for the last 25 years (and worked with them for 10 years) but I have never owned a laptop. To me they are just bulky, or very expensive if you want small. I'm very excited at these new computers and will buy me a EEE 900 when they are released. Small footprint, and very lightweight does it for me. CPU specs is of no importance for me on a laptop, as long as a webbrowser and the terminal is zippy I don't care.
I would say the lack of games, WOW possibly (altough it runs in wine). Word of course is a special case as it may not be the functions thats needed but the MS word format.
On the topic of Photoshop, while I agree it's probably high on the list on showstoppers I do not think it's very high for most people. Let me take an example. Everybody got a digital camera these days. On the website I run for regular Joes "rc modeling site" pretty much nobody knows howto resize an image. They gladly upload 10M files, and I have to rescale the images on the server. These are the kind of users I'm talking about. And there are a lot of them.
Adobe Photoshop is the standard for graphic designers for all intents and purposes.
GIMP is good enough for the rest of us. I design a website, touch up some photos and GIMP i good enough for my needs. It's not like GIMP is an MS Paint competitor. For many purposes it's just as good as Photoshop. I don't think that many Linux users would buy or even pirate Photoshop even if it was native Linux. Most of us "regular" users just don't need it.
For me, even installing a program from CD seems like a hassle I'm not used to (except for base system). Add to that that I need wine. Keeping it up-to-date seems even worse. Do windows even have an update-manager for third party programs? Is that "emulated" in wine?
While I can understand some people absolutely need Photoshop I can't see it being a showstoper for most. I can also understand how GIMP gives a bad impression if you tried it on Windows, it absolutely needs virtual screens to be used. Windows traditionally uses MDI interfaces instead and some Unix programs just don't port that good to the platform.
For me the point of Gentoo was the USE flags, few programs had plugin support, even fewer had runtime cpu detection. Nowadays it's much better, even oldschool programs like mplayer can be used without recompiling. For the past two years I have been using Ubuntu on the desktop and the only program I compile by hand is hot-babe (most people can live without it). I've compiled the kernel hundreds of times in my days, but not for a couple of years now. Gentoo just isn't worth it for me anymore, it was in the past. The point is I don't lose anything anymore by going with a prepackaged distro.
Thats one way to see it, but that wouldn't be a smartphone anymore. A key feature of smartphones is a wide selection of user installable apps. So far nothing have been announced so we don't know yet what we have to choose from. I guess 99.99% of the world don't need an ssh app so I'm propably out of luck there.
but you can bet Apple had their lawyers look at it.
I'm sure they have, they have probably looked for months on how they can make it illegal to distribute free patches. Now they have found a "loophole" and can start charging money for simple upgrades to a driver.
If the price is bargain low I could see myself grabing a licence. I only use windows for gaming anyway. A game + web browser would be enough for me.
Not a lot of people I know actually have an HDTV.

There are countless iPhones that do work correctly
I agree, I've had my iPhone 3G since day one and it have never dro%&1KK#"#^NO CARRIER
Iphone on fire, text in swedish. He was charging it.

I'm sure the Mozilla people used the Safari auto-download feature to put Firefox on everybodys desktop and downloadfolders.
Too bad Apple can't do the same since Firefox don't have that particular feature yet.
3DNow! predates sse.
Neither article presents proof (or even speculation) as to the origins of the fakes.
And ten sources back the article was about growing banana trees on the pole. Got to love modern media.

then just tell you to buy a faster machine.
Well, you just told me to get a floppy drive.
Not to forget, startup is sysvinit compatible. Making the transition easy.
what's the point of paying for mp3's you wont legally own?
What's the point of legally owning an mp3?
or is Apple trying to fix a potential security hole
Maybe Apple should take peek at how other players manages this. Nobody else has a security issue...
Yeah, but still 100 times faster than a regular 3.5MHz ZX spectrum.

Quit your rambling. He merely pointed out the fastest way to install a program. There is an easy graphical way if you want it.
You don't have to manually download the programs in Linux either. Something you forgot to mention in your post.

I think I understand now, it's nice to know at least one OS out there is Sarbanes-Oxley compliant. If you need it, look no further.
