Remember, of course, that this is China.

Quality, safety, and any sort of standards mean nothing there - along the same lines as intellectual property and personal freedom.

My last 3 laptops have been high-end HP workstation models with blank disks. They are, compared to the rest, very good about giving you exactly what you want in your computer. I haven't used it or anything, but I believe there is an option to get some of the more mainstream linux distros pre-installed as well. You may have to buy through another reseller like Newegg or CDW for that.

In the context of this discussion, though, there isn't much point...since I do just fine using Windows myself.

It's too cheap and simple to pirate stuff.

The music industry just needs to accept that no amount of features or discounts will ever beat a few clicks for free music.

I would pay for my music on principle, if the money actually went to the artists. As it stands, I refuse to fund the media mafia.

Singles are a hell of a lot more cost-effective than entire albums. If I actually paid for my music, I would not buy an entire album unless it was awesome all the way through. I would just buy the songs I like.

Does this mean I can sue Microsoft when Windows crashes and I lose a bunch of data that's not backed up?

I mean, they programmed it to do one thing and it broke and caused me fiscal harm. That's the same thing, right?

Oh wait, that's right - I clicked 'Agree' when I installed Windows and waived away all of my rights to sue for bad programming. Problem solved (for them).

It might be a good idea not to connect life-support and -monitoring equipment to the Internet? Even an internal network is a poor idea.

These infrastructures can't handle flawless transmission of the NORMAL data that isn't life-critical, so I sure as hell don't trust it to tell a doctor in any timely or reliable fashion if my heart rate drops or my O2 sats are off so they can come help. Perhaps a separate, dedicated system is in order? You could possibly use most of the same type of infrastructure components, such as Cat-5 and Ethernet standards, I just don't trust Cisco to keep me alive any more than Microsoft or Dell.

You seem to be confusing the cushy county lockup you may have seen after a late-night bender with Leavenworth Prison, where they send those accused/convicted without proper due process and civil rights because they chose to put their lives at risk by joining the military.

The press has a right/obligation to protect its sources - it always has, and it always should. How good for business would it be for a journalistic outlet to go "Oh hey, guess what awful government secret John Doe over here just gave me" ? They'd never get another tip or story again.
