Google thought up a way to get people to work on the parts of open source noone actually wants to work on, but people need. They will write specs, then pay the people that do the work.
It's called a job.
But this is Google, so it's not just a job... oh wait, it is.
Why would you willingly goto a place with lots of people sitting around on laptops?
Those are the last people on the planet I want to be around to socialize with. That's my crowd for work or a confined to a LUG setting, and the upcoming WWDC of course:)
Until a true 1080p TV costs less then a car, and the next generation media is under a dollar... why should I care exactly?
99% of the 10% of humans that even have a computer, don't care about any of this until it's AFFORDABLE. By which time, the margins will be so low that none of this battle will matter. And I'd bet backups to IDE will still be cheaper TCO-wise.
Also, a system with 10x the storage will be out in a year.
So which way am I better off? Just using lower wattage "classic" lightbulbs, or with dozens of 120V AC->5V DC converters wasting energy everywhere.
The adapter for my iBook puts out more heat then the iBook. More of the heat from my AMD64 is from the power supply vs. the CPU and Gfx.
Almost nothing I own needs over 12V anymore. When will I be able to just have one nice 120->12V spaceheater and run everything else in the room off 12V?
Software: If you charge for it, they will flee. Paying for software is so 1980, and why should we, someone is more then willing to make a free version of anything important in their spare time.
Humans will only pay for food, shelter, and entertainment (i.e. sex, drugs, and rock and roll). NOTHING ELSE!
What is so funny about the chinese is that they are so agressive about copying and marketing American products, that they will even copy, strip, and market FREE software. I've had it happen to me - twice!
Maybe it was just a class project or something, to prepare them for work in the chinese marketplace? That does often seem like all they do.

I do, and I did ;)
A dual core Intel system uses something like 250W when idle. So at worst, I'm off by a factor of 2, obviously systems dont run at peak all the time ;)
THis is a dual core Intel chip and a top end graphics card... Lets see, 580W * 24 * 365 * $0.17/KW*Hr (CA rates) = $863.74/yr
Not bad. Add in what it takes to cool the room it's in, large fans, or AC, so double that.
So only about $1,700/year to power that new dual core Intel system. Rural China will be swarming with these in no time!!!
*waits for Intel and AMD to get a F'ing clue*
Gamers and food in one place... Can you image the smell?
Women will flee the county, houses downwind will lose value, skunks will congregate...
Yea, too bad about the horrific genetic consequences of starting a family at 30 instead of 20.
Good thing we can engineer DNA now.
People that know how to do things, rarely know what things to do. They aren't users and have nothing in common with users.
The result is alot of poeple doing stuff noone needs or wants. Just look at SourceForge, 100 of everything.
Solution: log yourself off once in a while and visit the big blue room.
Linux is free as in chai in India, but so is Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition.
;)
The localization is the key feature here, and has nothing to do with price. But watch for the 100's of posts about cost anyway
So the ANSI C code I've been writing forever will compile in longhorn just like it does in Win32/64, Linux, OS X, and everything else...
The OS is irrelivant, long live the OS!

Haven't you heard, Americans are above making things. Our hands might get dirty like.
Congress is just out of it, like always.
Spend the extra money on RAM instead, the cacheing will more then fix the drive RPM issue.
;)
Like any computer, once you run the apps once, they load near instantly.
And if you're doing heavy file serving, well... that's not what a mini is for now is it
I suppose booting form a USB drive fully firewalled and then using PGP and VPN/SSH tunneling is just too simple?
I'm sure we could come with a nice nerdy hard way if you would prefer, but the above works just fine.
I'm sorry, I used Perl for many years, and of all the languages I've used, it's by far the least maintainable, even compared to LISP!
This is the key reason Python is replacing Perl in most places.
Fear not!!! This will be fixed in the dupe.

Amazing what your country can do when your government hasn't banned some science and forbidden the rest.
Me American. Thump bible. That cure all! Bush say so.
Hrm, well, I don't know, maybe it's the 1000% markup IBM uses? Or that the 445 is nothing like what he asked for?
Well obviously the cheaters, because they ended up in law or business school and cars are important to that crowd ;)
The ones that didn't need the calculator are probably biking, smart enough to live near work...

MIT... dancefloor...
There is a joke in there somewhere, I just know it.
Everythign Hollywood tried to remake from the BBC is crap. Because it's all about the money, not making something good. Complete crap.
Why should the guild be any different?

Well yea, they are selling YOU to the advertisers.
