    Palm is not buying Be, Inc. Palm is buying Be's intellectual property. Palm is NOT buying Be as a whole. The situation is similiar to nVidia and 3dfx.

    Two types of administrators will be coming to ten. The Mac weenie, and the Unix weenie. The mac weenie will enjoy his GUI tools. A portion of the Mac weenies will think "Wow this my oppurtunity to learn some Unix." The other portion will sit their and bitch and wine. The portion that does not bitch and whine will learn shell, perl, and python. And learn that they know have a OS with a GUI that Grandma likes. And the ability to write a python script that can run as a cron job and fix her computer every night. The Unix weenies will rejoice at having Unix and MS Office on the same computer, and push Apple to include features found in other Unix's. These two groups will meet up at a weenie roast, and the Mac users will be telling the Unix users of all these great features that Darwin has, and the Unix people will simply respond with a resounding "DUH, where have you been!!!" PS. All VMS weenies will still be pissed off after the weenie roast.

    Everyone else seems to be making excuses here. To me it is fairly simple. No free software packages that I have ever downloaded make, me click and agree to the GPL. I wont even know it is there unless I go look for it. The author never makes me click and bind to anything. If I am lucky there is a file called GPL or license. If I never look at it. Oh well.. It should be noted that this decision will probably get appealed to US Supreme Court. This decision by a federal judge has very wide implications on what is required for people agree to a license.

    Considering that the GPL restricts your right on what you can do with GPL'ed software. Wouldn't the BSD style license be more politcally correct. If our tax dollars are going toward it, shouldn't the software created with those tax dollars be as free as possible. Both for individuals and business. Both pay tax's. Both should have equal rights to federally funded software.

  5. Alot of security updates on Apple Releases - Doing Less, Faster, Is Better? · · Score: 1

    Alot of the updates have included security related updates. Like 10.0.2 had a fix for the FTP globbing attack. Apple seems to be really paranoid about security. They know what comes with giving a person a unix distribution under the hood. I personally like seeing lots of updates, especially when they have to do with security. Cheers, Tomas

    I think the author of the post was comparing something like MySQL to Oracle. If I am going to run UPS. I am going to run it on Oracle. MySql is just no their yet. OpenLDAP is not at the same level as Netscape LDAP. Both these issues are changing quickly, but a lot of open source programs are just not their yet.

    Are Linux user that UI starved that they think Eazel is the next greatest thing to swiss cheese. My god, the 1.0 release was very underwhelming. I have used their products. They don't strike me as being anything ground breaking or easy to use as the original Mac. (I owned a 128K in 1984) What is all the flap about? I know it was just 1.0. So it was bound to get better with time. How did they expect to make money. UI consultants? Aqua on Mac OS X is ground breaking. Barring, that the underlying engine of the OS definitley needs some work. Cheers, Thomas

" Funny, I know Apple has been able to server a 1000 times that using Darwin streaming server. Oh yea, and the Mac OS had a web server right after NCSA was released. It was called MacHTTPD , now known as WebStar. Now there are three or different options, even a commerical Apache port.

    For a time a couple of years ago, when CmdrTaco was still doing this for fun, and not profit. I beleive he did move to FreeBSD. Just because, at the time for tasks like web serving it is was such a better OS. Yes Linux has caught up in a lot of ways. You could argue that in some ways it has even surpassed its BSD cousins. Red Hat's ftp site was using FreeBSD for a while too.

I find this statement most troubling. A firewall protects the outside, and the inside. The firewall protects the outside by preventing external intruders from gaining unauthorized access to the internal network. The firewall also protects employees from themselves in many cases by keeping them from using unauthorized services that may 1, bring the network to its knees by crunching the bandwidth available. Or 2, By stopping a sabetour/employee from committing industrial espionage. If you firewall traversal protocol went through. It wouldn't allow more invoations. It would just cause firewall companies to upgrade their software to screen the packets on port 80 for only true web traffic. That is all. Firewall vendors support you because, you will force companies to pay for costly major upgrades to their firewall.

    So you are going into everyone's home to inspect their playstation? If you are selling them modified. That is a different story. If you are selling pirated games, or modified stations then I can see the law applying. Sounds like a law that would be used by a crazed DA, who was bent on prosecuting someone for something. SOrt of like some US Federal Attorney's and Represenatives in the US.

    Yea, I have AIXamin because I have absolutley no originallity. Plus, 8 years ago I started off on AIX 3.x. So I suppose I am being nostalgic. How is Rick? You and Rick, were always much more pragmatic abou the whole licensing issue , and OS perspective then , the red headed guy whose name just had a senior moment in my head. Oh well. I don't think you will be disapointed with OS X. How is BE?

    The interview link to Wind River yesterday phrased the biggest difference best. embedded systems follow a much different model then enterprise systems. Embedded system companies don't want to give the details away of their machines, like the GPL would force them to do. NetBSD from a licensing standpoint is much more favorable.

And do you know how much money they have lost now that there whole product has been regineered! And put under a BSD style license. So that anyone can use! The least they could do would be to put it under the GPL so that it would turn off half of the users, and operating systems on the planet. You OpenSSH guys cost SSH 5 new ferrari's!! Way to make such a strong statement about switching on such a pro-linux forum. I will still keep Linuxppc on my other partition. But, I will not use it nearly as much.
