    So based on the opinions of a few, people, you determine that it's egocentric. How about a bunch of people? Example: all the people wanting universal health care, and lower taxes. They want the government to watch out for them for the rest of their lives, and the rest of the world to pay for it. People are egocentric everywhere.

    not just that, but these "future technologies" we are seeing are still based on LAN. And even on the off-chance that some new type of networking is developed, it won't be able to reach the low price point of LAN.

    I it's not so much thinking like a terrorist, as thinking analytically. I look at a current even, and see the logic (or lack thereof), patterns, and history. This will lead many of us to be more pessimistic about society. And then with the logic thinking inspired by Spock, we feel that we know exactly what to do about it. I don't think that it's so much that engineers are thinking like terrorists, as the general population is more disconnected from reality. Britney shaves her hair, and the media is all over it for months. Some new scandal that could have far-reaching consequences happens with an elected official, and it gets 30 seconds on the 10 o'clock news. It's not that we engineers think like terrorists, as they DON'T think like the average American.

    And the true question: do (m)any of the people using it care? On an application level, a web server will be a web server, OOo will be OOo, and GCC will be GCC. most people using Linux don't really care if it meets the UNIX specification.

    true with the rest of the world, too. Yes, America is trading most freedoms for some small amount of "security", but a large part of the rest of the world has, too. Examples include the cameras in public places in Europe, the "gun free" zones that cover entire countries, and even not fighting against invasive governments such as communists who ask you to turn in other people who may not like the powers that be. Yes, America is falling, but a large part of the civilized world has already fallen to those in power. We're just behind the times.

    What about LEGOS!? Seriously, they have a track record of several decades of non-damaging, brain-challenging, mind-engaging entertainment, and have been responsible for the last ~75 years of engineers. On that note, you might want to keep your kids away from them, or else the /. boards will be flooded in 15 years. Who knows what logical thinking and problem solving will do to today's society?

    Apple has, what, 5% of the market share? Say 70% of those are x86/x86_64 boxes, that's about 3% of the market. So it should be:

    Apple *owns* 3% of x86 now.
