Same with ID-cards, being pushed by the consumer sector to reduce Credit-Card fraud. All it will do is boost the trade in fake IDs..
If someone picks up your credit card and doesn't need an ID, they can start charging as soon as they walk into a store. It takes time to get a fake ID together, time in which you can discover your credit card is missing, and call it in.
That is on purpose to filter out those who will be deterred by advertisements with creative spellings (i.e. v1@gr@). The advertising companies are very concerned about not sending unwanted messages to anyone.
The flies, which are USDA -approved, do not attack native ants or species and have been introduced in other Gulf Coast states, Plowes said.
Not that you can put 100% confidence in the statement, but it seems they've done testing and found these flies ignore native species, which would mean it may, in fact, work. I doubt the scientists involved in this project are oblivious of previous failed attempts at messing with food chains.
I've seen plenty of browser articles on/. but have yet to learn what benefit companies derive by having a popular browser, and motivates them to put so much money and effort into their product. Anyone care to explain?

Why Bother With DRM?

Pirating the game later has the same effect as buying the game second hand as far as the publisher is concerned, but by pirating it you don't support the second hand market, which benefits the publisher. I might see such practices justified for games that break the second hand market, but if they have no/reasonable DRM, I can't say I entirely agree with you.
I see piracy as the lesser of the two evils here. The media companies are overstepping their bounds and infringing on our rights as private citizens enough that piracy is the better solution, but if allowed to break out of the dichotomy I would prefer no piracy and sane corporations (including fixing Congress-approved corporate policies such as endless copyright). Yes, I know neither of those things are possible.
I couldn't tell if your comment is meant to be mutually exclusive of the quoted opinion, so sorry if I'm just summarizing what you meant.
Maybe change it so the only acceptable food is in the form of one cookie. That way people are free to show their appreciation, but it would be difficult for a lobbyist to do much since there is only so much someone is willing to do for an Oreo.
A car is clearly flawed if it typically gets you killed in a 20 MPH crash, but is acceptable if it gets you killed in a 100 MPH crash. People- legislators especially- don't grasp computers well enough to tell the difference, so they will see every problem as a flaw.

Had it hit a heavily populated area we would have a lot more data than a bunch of trees in the middle of nowhere and the reports from peasants. It was over a decade before a scientist went out there- Russian mineralogist Leonid Kulik in 1921 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event. I would say there is a strong chance we would know what the thing actually was, which would allow for a calmer reaction than uneducated peasants fearing the apocalypse.
Now, if it hit a major city during the cold war, it may have triggered a nuclear holocaust...
Any clue if statisticians have collected data to show pseudo-violent* activities have about the same correlation to criminal violence as any other common activity (i.e. wearing pants)? While my example has humor value, making such a silly comparison with the data to support it would go a long way in making people laugh off these crazy laws as lunacy.
Such a technique was used when a study argued that an increase in hospital beds increased hospital stays, an increase in chiropractors leads to an increase in demand for back surgery, etc. The counterarugment was that this logic implies that an increase in OB/GYNs leads to an increase in childbirth, which is clearly absurd.
*I say pseudo-violent because I do not know what the numbers would be like for fighting sports like boxing- nothing against boxers but it the sport IS violent, compared to paint balling.
After the bad XP to Vista conversion effort, they learned to write in a few wait loops. Each new windows version they reduce the waits, that way they're guaranteed to speed things up each time.
It only seems self correcting because we want to apply some kind of order to it
You could say something similar to scientific theories in general- nature doesn't follow all those equations you learned in physics, the equations just do a good job of modeling what nature looks like. "Self-correcting" seems to model things well enough.
The No Child Left Behind funding should go towards things like this. Make sure every child is an intentional pregnancy, and you have a huge drop in apathetic parenting, meaning kids will have a better chance they'll be learning at home, not just at school. Sure, it won't be perfect as there will always be parents that change their minds too late, or that just don't know what they're doing, but I would expect a significant improvement. I believe the problems with our education system are most often with the parents, not the teachers, so as hard as it may be to get people to seriously consider this, it likely would be a more effective use of our tax dollars. It's not like we're seeing results from giving the money to our school administrators.

Fusion is a product of temperature and density.
That should mean we would get fusion if we turn up the thermostat at the Capitol building.

I seriously doubt it shuts down every two hours. No Windows system is stable that long at a time.

I disagree. A leading 1 is definitely the most common leading digit of primes in base 2.

The sun's trying to start a snowball fight.
I'll patent those chimps on typewriters and claim any and all potential derivative works.
probes beyond Jupiter won't work because there isn't enough sunlight to use solar panels
Then just have the probes bring the sun with them...

How many chimpanzees at genetic typewriters does it take to produce all of the extict lifeforms?
