Speaking of being stretched thin, recently there was another incident where a new RCMP officer was killed while alone without backup: (here). It's not the first time, either, as there have been several incidents like this in the past, including one where four (one of whom had been on the force for only 17 days) were killed while seizing property. There's been a lot of controversy about this.

What happens when the person next to you looks and sees what you're drawing? The advantage of text-based passwords is that you can have them as stars or whatever onscreen. And if the users are unwilling / too stupid to make secure passwords (with numbers/letters/symbols), a drawing isn't going to be fundamentally more secure anyways, it's just a gimmick.

That's odd. My experience was actually quite the opposite: When doing an reinstall of OEM Vista, I had to spend 2 hours poring through howtos, manuals, etc, getting drivers and trying to get everything to work, but installing off the Kubuntu 7.10 alpha 5 worked flawlessly. I'm not going to flame you, because if that was your experience, that was your experience. But it's quite different than what happened to me.

Note: this was an OEM disc, supplied by Dell itself, so I would have to wonder why it wouldn't work..

In my opinion, it doesn't really matter whether ubuntu is better, because Microsoft already has >90% of the market. Be realistic: 2008 will not be the year of the Linux Desktop. Neither will 2009. Or 2010. When a company has that much marketshare and actively tries to keep others from entering the playing field, it's not really going to happen. Most people just want to sit at the computer and do their work. I use the Vista on my laptop only about 3% of the time; otherwise I'm using Kubuntu. When I'm on the bus and the person asks me about compiz, I happily tell them about Linux. But the momentum of Microsoft Windows is so large that Linux will not become a widely-used desktop OS.

You're wrong. According to wikipedia, contrails have a negative effect. Anyways, the effect of the contrails is vastly outweighed by the carbon emissions. I remember hearing about a study that was saying that after the 9/11 attacks, when there was no air traffic, the temperature dropped. Of course, it's a small sample size, but you can't shut down all air traffic for a month to do a science experiment.

IMO, Windows Vista is the most secure Windows yet (because of UAC). That said, compared to other systems, is Windows secure? It is certainly less secure than my Linux box. But OS security is only one half of the equation. IMO, many viruses are PICNIC (Problem in Chair, Not In Computer) problems. I think that the problem of viruses would be greatly reduced if people were less ignorant about viruses.
