If it and its carrier partners win, 'Internet freedom' will mean freedom for carriers to be the 21st century's robber barons
What do you mean - will be? We already pay a ridiculous monthly fee for piss poor access that you can't even get in most parts of the US. The areas that do get broadband access are all carved up into local monopolies so that users can stay crowded on the same cables as 10 years ago that can no longer carry the load and if you do try to use the broadband you paid for you get disconnected or throttled by the carrier. So how is this any more than business as usual?
In this economy employers can pay whatever they want because there are more than enough unemployed professionals of every variety to immediately fill any gaps left by disgruntled employees.
I love inflammatory comments as much as the next/.er, but I can't imagine this law being used on its own to prosecute somebody. Most likely it'll be used as part of child exploitation cases just to pile on the charges or find something to pin on the defendant. So probably not a big deal...
...unless the local DA (or Canada's equivalent) has a bone to pick with you.
What is this rest of the world you speak of? Do you mean Mexico and Canada? Is Sweden a Canadian state? I think I've heard of those places. Do they get the internet there?
UAVs still have human pilots because politicians would freak out and media hysteria machines would have a field day if you had fully automated drones flying around, with or without bombs attached.
Related to schools, if your daughter is looking to apply to med school in the US after undergrad make sure you have a Windows or Mac kicking around somewhere because AMCAS locks Linux computers out of their online application.
In case you forgot the term engineer originally applied to constructors of military engines. Engineers have a long and healthy tradition of being clever and morally bankrupt.
If the book can be summarized in those last three sentences is it really worth the read? I think/.ers will realize before turning the first page that even the most ridiculously complex security system can be thwarted by stickies posted to people's monitors.
So I guess the only people who are truly free are those who can go out into the world buck naked and completely uneducated, survive, mine and refine their own minerals, build a workshop, build their own computer components in that workshop, assemble them and write their own drivers, OS, and other applications. But wait, they're still dependent on oxygen, water, food, and suitable living conditions.
Not picking on you specifically, damburger, but Anonymous Coward parent does bring up a great point that FOSS advocates often denounce without really thinking about it. If you've got to do everything on your own, you're never going to get anything useful done.
More to the point, the feeling of independence that people get using an OS such as Linux over Windows is an illusion. Are you going to write drivers for every piece of hardware you own? Are you going to write your own applications for everything you need to do? You can depend on Joe Developer or you can depend on the MS Team, but either way you can't get it all done yourself.
If I made watches & one of them stopped a rifle round I'd make damn sure it got replaced, you'd be more likely to keep telling that story if you had a similar watch on your wrist to remind you.:D
Besides, what's gonna stop the next round if your watch is gone?

I doubt that true exploration will ever be done privately. There's no money to be made that way.

Unplug while you still can, there's a real world out there, and its more HD than HD and has surround sound.
/. irony at it's best.
Fine, he beat the game. Now I wanna see a speed run.
Conductivity isn't the issue, noise is.
Everyone knows KDE is better than Gnome. And really, Ubuntu isn't even a real distro. It's just Debian gimped and preconfigured.
run away! run away!
And also shows how silly it is to have what is basically a civil job being done by the Army.
Only the Army has enough money to work on civil projects. At least that's how it works in the US.
Welcome to the rest of the world.

Why do you put up with this shit?
Because taking it up the ass from ISPs is more convenient than moving to another country.
Yup, that pretty much sums it up. Anything that EA touches turns to shit and I wouldn't expect this to be any different.
The people responsible are going to be sipping Martinis in the Caribbean long after some poor schmucks are made the scapegoats for this.
That's not psychopathic, that's opportunistic. Or more simply, that's human nature.
ISPs hire snipers to defend themselves from homing pigeon carrier competition.

So I'm guessing this is why we don't see that show on the air anymore.
Nothing good can come of this. If they do start churning out sequels it'll only be to cash in on old names.
4 hours a day in most other games, not casual. In EVE, that's casual.
