The list should continue to list which games work with WineX, even if they've been ported.

For example, you list Tribes2, but LokiGames has gone under and cannot support the game anymore (and my copy breaks pretty frequently). There's a bit of worry expressed on the GarageGames.com forum about a new patch to be released this summer by Sierra for the Windows version that it may break the existing Linux binaries that try to use patched servers if Sierra decides not to update the Linux client as well (which seems pretty likely).

  19. DCOP (I think?), and status dock on KDE 3.0 beta 1 is out · · Score: 1

One thing I noticed with KDE is whenever I would try to launch a sound file from Konqueror, if the media player wasn't already loaded, the media player would load, begin to play what was on the playlist, and then a few seconds later it would stop playing that and start playing the song I requested from Konqueror. It's really annoying.

Also there are inconsitencies between the closing action on apps that use the status dock (sometimes it kills the app, sometimes it just hides the app window).

Any fixes on these two fronts before I go and update everything?

Hmmm, so would the corollary to this mean that we should work on the Cygwin project to make it possible to load ELF executables in Windows? Then people can write programs for Linux, and it automatically works on Windows, and we don't have to worry much about compatibility either since MS doesn't own it. Or does Cygwin already have this functionality? Or are there insurmountable techical problems with this approach?

I admit my general ignorance; I haven't looked at this much. This is just and idea off the top of my head.

  23. Hunting the .EXEs on File Extensions And Monopolies · · Score: 1

I would have to agree with the majority of the people here that this was a ridiculous argument. However, one thing not mentioned is the fact that with "Open With...", you have to hunt down the .exe file in order to make an association. Perhaps something Microsoft could do better would be to allow multiple associations and one default association, a la GNOME's mime-type handlers. Trying to find the right .exe can be a real pain in the neck, especially if you don't know where in the file tree to start looking.

Yeah, there'd be all the X-associated problems, but then also there would be an inconsistent interface for non-gnome / non-bonobo apps. I wouldn't recommend a gtk hack, just because it feels wrong (esp since they can just throw menus anywhere), and it also leaves out Qt-, tcl-, et al-based apps and probaby creates more confusion for the end-user than we started with (though an option for advanced users would probably be suitable). Anyway, I'm not a gnome/bonobo expert, but if you'd like to discuss it, email me or look me up on irc.gimp.net (strick)
