Man, I love climbing rock walls (the fake ones). So much fun!
But like my sig says....
The question isn't "can you?" But rather "why would you want to?" So much power and effort when much easier and more importantly, simpler systems have been developed. But that's not to say it might not have an application some day right? Say like, having to venture outside of the international space station a`la R2D2 to fix a power coupling or something. Just saying!
Like my buddy said to me one time: "If I could download a computer through the net, I would!" lol I'm sorry, but that is funny to me.
Well, at least in a schools network, they probably could get up there in catching 'illegal file transfers.' But would the school REALLY want to catch them? I doubt it. As by many articles by new york county lawyers point out, the schools don't do much UNTIL they are harassed by *IAA for (any number of of problems\).
I remember seeing teachers make copies from 1 book for the entire class! How do I remember this from so long ago? I have a little problem when pages I'm working on are crooked. So whenever I come across a bad copy, it's an instant flash back to elementary school.
So what happens when the space shuttles are all retired and we only have apollo-era capsules that we can send up with a breath-taking-fall-back-to-earth? Not dissing you, but the U.S. really bit the bag on this one. The shuttles are one of the best assets the U.S. has. Literally, no one else on earth has *anything* close to it. What a shame.
I don't even have to specialize in a real language to do that... I'm happy with ActionScript!
But I think that the idea was *probably brought up* if not at least contemplated... but due to , it just wasn't feasible ($$$).
The first thing that comes to mind, is how are you going to power it? You would probably mostly negate the benefit of sending up supplies. A fuel source in space is like oil on earth in like 300 years - very difficult to come by!
And even if it wasn't "money" or the "cost" of getting the fuel up there to power such a shuttlett, it was probably the "safety" issues that keep it from coming into play. Though to you and me it would make perfect sense to have on hand. And really, what if some E.T.s sent us a care package and we can't retrieve it? No worse way to offend a possibly lethal race!
So while trying to resupply it, the 'RUSSIAN' components failed to deliver its payload. It's now a possible danger to our gov't/mil satellites.
arrrarrarrarr
What do you propose we do?
arrarrarrrarr
Well, the public isn't going to like this. Can't we use our own rockets for this? Oh, so the Russians have superior rockets. How much money are we spending on this? Oh, that's not good. Didn't we already cut the Space Shuttle program out? Oh, so we can't even get our own people or supplies up to the ISS? Well WTF CAN WE DO!???????????
At first thought, it was the Wizard of Oz. But after explanation, it was simply their 'perception' from stories told. I've been very fortunate to have many acquaintances from asia/'middle east.' Mostly egyptian, pakistani and indian. But to be honest, this isn't limited to people that far and in rural villages... although I believe the more remote means more believing crazy things. I came across some of that in mexico.
So, this is interesting. Good vs. Evil aside, those who like less U.S. Govn't should be like "Screw you FTC! It's a free market and it regulates itself! Google is making it's own earnings and not mooching off of welfare! They should also have to pay less taxes because they generate jobs and revenue for many of previously mentioned moochers. If anything, they deserve a tax break. I mean, I don't make 1/googleth of the money they do, but those are *my* beliefs!" Right?
Then on the other side we have "So, now google will know who we are, what we buy, say, who we talk to (gmail), communicate incognito or otherwise (gvoice), are interested in (google), look to go and where we're at; and where I park my bike in front of my house (gmaps), what we use to do said things (OS version, chrome and phone sets), how our networks are set up (gwifi-spy) and now they want to know ("help") us get to where we want to go?"
Yeah, it might be a little to late to unfriend google at this point. This sort of reminds me of that store in Wall-E, the big mart or something where it's an ALL IN ONE sort of deal.
I guess we'll find out what our true feelings are when it's too late because "they've crossed the line."
On the other hand, the service(s) they provide is still outstanding. What do you guys think?
Oh, and don't forget about dazzal or razzle . Oh yeah it's called Google buzz...
As far as my beliefs go... It's all about the Ying/Yang baby! Oh yeah and don't forget about Socrates...
Hmm, that just made me think of all the cust serv centers out there. So if lets say, RIM or G placed "one of their servers in India" so DoT can put their server in to monitor, as customers of say, Verizon or AT&T, could we say they're violating our rights to privacy?
You see the whole tracking of communication thing is slipping between their fingers and they are grabbing whatever they can, not expecting to get even 1%. I doubt it will make a difference in the next attack.
And I agree with you. I always tell people, if I was to become a criminal I'd never get caught! That's what they "all say" right? But people who fall into actually doing that sort of thing don't actually think the way we do (most of the anyways).
If anything, it's probably for PR and to scare people off from using those resources for 'crime.' I mean, most of them would believe it as long as they demanded it and the companies remain active in the country even IF it didn't happen.
I've heard SO MANY STORIES from many people from asia/"middle east" that said when they first came state side, they thought the streets were paved in gold. I laughed because I thought they were joking, and they laughed as well. But because from what they saw on tv and saw in the movies, they believed it. So maybe that's really what is going on here. Because really, do they think they could control everything? They better give the pentagon some tips if they figure it out eh?
So, when Spore came out, there was this big thing and I was like that sucks, but probably won't affect/effect me because I don't really go for those games or most games from EA right...
So a friend made (convinced) me to get BattleField 2142 right... So after a format or 3 (hardware issue) I wasn't able to play because I've hit the max install limits. I was very upset;D
So I hit the EA forums, and literally, a "mod" said to send him PM's with info and they'd help out. Although people were helped at first, that was the end of it. The "mod" said that EA people weren't going to "fix" those problems. That's when the outrage started!
So after hearing NOTHING back from EA directly, the "mod" was actually more helpful even though they didn't work for EA, I did what everyone else was doing (and suggested everyone else to do) which was reporting EA to the BBB. Big whoop right?
EA actually answered, once, and never again lol. So I said f this and forgot about it. Months later I tried it and sure enough it installed, with no surprise. I had found out that after a certain amount of time (I think weeks) the installs "get cleared" from their system and allow it to be installed once again on a "different" PC. What was different was the install, as the hardware (except one stick of RAM!), case, software and programs were all exactly the same! So since then I go out of my way to keep people from buying their games.
So yeah, whenever possible, I try to stick to physical media. Sure, it could have the same exact thing built into it, but I am not forced to install a downloader which downloads a game several GB's fat each and every time you want to reinstall. I backed up all my files and installers and it just didn't like that. It thought I was trying to trick it! So yeah, I played by their rules once, and they lost a customer and hopefully countless others as well.
Does that mean they might potentially have access to my gmail? What about people who send mail to me? Does that mean that they automatically get the right to look in my inbox? What if they're spammers and they use that as cover?
I don't comprehend India's reasoning behind this. It's a serious case of "Hey, you're doing it wrong..." What is the point of protecting (encrypting) or communications if we just hand over a key?
I don't honestly expect G or anyone else to bend to their demands... but then again, most companies 'have a price' if it can be met.
Finally, what do you think the likelihood of ANY company allowing India's DoT to actually place one of THEIR servers in the companies network?
At what point will it be so bad, that so many students are getting busted and have to drop out to cover legal fees/expenses because of pirating?
Does anyone have the stats of how many higher learning students have pirated something? Be it music, movies, software etc. Another interesting thing to have is what % of those who do pirate anything have gotten "busted." What about those deterred from pirating because they know someone who has gotten busted?
Recently, I tried to go the 'environmentally friendly' route and consolidated all my bsd needs into one dual core atom system. Surprisingly (at least to me!), is that it takes up no more than 30 watts! My monitor (LCD) takes up more than that!
I mention it because of the heat/inefficiency/cooling fan line of yours. It is easy to run 2 or even 3 machines when they're off and on again. But when you start running those or more 24/7, the electric bill adds up.
Normally, as not only a member but the founder of GhettoBSD, I would say to keep it and stick it in a future box you might happen to obtain. But being how times have changed, it might not be such a great idea to continue using it as it will hold back the speed of access for whatever ends up using it.
But what would be GhettoBSD Approved! Is that you build a little set up and donate it to a school. Yeah, they probably have things 4x better than what you could provide, but they could give it away to a child in need.
Recently I pruned my collection and was at a loss as to what to do. I really couldn't give away 850 Mhz amd's I used as my servers, because most people just couldn't find them useful. Contacting 'local' recycling centers returned pretty expensive fees to take the components for recycling. Sticking them in the trash was really not an option I wanted to contemplate. So I ended up parting them them out. Hopefully they made someone happy!
Depending where you live and your city, you might be lucky enough to have a local government that promotes recycling. Try that avenue! If not, maybe a local recycling center will take it for free. But the worst thing would be to just toss them in the trash.
BTW, if you have any good junk you don't want, let me know... lol
Because of previous experiences, I take into consideration the effort and time it'll take to write something up from scratch for my own customized use or just adapt someone else's work. Though, I've never released code that I didn't write.
What is interesting though, is to catch your work in action under someone else's name! I was writing scripts for mIRC (I know!) in the 90s and did some cool stuff. So one day in a channel I see familiar format and I'm like hmmmm. So of course, being a little sneaky after having been ripped off (no credit!) before, I paste some text and bam! There it is, Socrates Script 2000! Ah how sweet it was.
My fav is when apple users come and tell me how they don't need anti virus protection because their system is so bad ass! I then proceed to explain why their system is so bad ass.
Check out the BSD family tree (edited of course! (only added to, not removed/changed)) found here: BSD Family
The problem is that no one is going to argue "Well I should be able to pirate xxx."
What nintendo should do is allow a homebrew channel, officially. That could help prevent having to go deeper into the system. If people want to make games for it then they can, for free. If they want to sell them then they need to go through their online store.
Obviously I am not an expert in the IOS or other details of how the wii work. But this would effectively cut 99.99% of the flames nintendo takes. Because only.01% is stupid enough to argue "but we still can't pirate games with the official homebrew channel."
Man, I love climbing rock walls (the fake ones). So much fun!
