Anyway, I read the same sentence (about exporting data) and it made me wonder if it wouldn't be fairly straightforward to make a facebook app that does just that.. Maybe there is one allready, but my point is that if there is a demand, there is probably nothing stopping it from happening (unless fb actually are beeing jerks in ways I don't know).

There are also terriffic people who release media as CC today, for instance I share my collection of TED talks with BitTorrent.

Thank you - I could hardly believe what I saw: Someone basically writes that there is a conspiracy to dumb down America.. and he gets firmly modded "insightful"! I think there may be economical interests that make it prefereable for companies to keep the public full of certain bullshit, something that we should be carefull with when we design laws. Then there is of course religious bullshit, a chapter on it's own. But I can't really bring myself to think that any (relevant) group of people would counsciously be trying to "dumb down" anyone, let alone an entire country. That'd be serious megalomania, for starters.

I think such ideas are shadows of the very dangerous thing that has caused so much trouble in the past: When there is some kind of trouble and we can't see an obvious cause, blame it on some foreigners! Are the Jews by any chance trying to dumb down America? Or maybe it is someone who has oil who is trying to dumb down America.

Hah, the old "if people stop pirating, prices will be lower" argument. No, a commodity is worth what a purchaser is willing to pay for it - I bet the Biz people know this very well (if little else) and thus the price of a specific item will not change as directly as that. What it (the amount of pirating) does affect is of course whether a product is worth marketing at all. A long winding argument from there might possibly lead to lower prices in some sense but it's certainly more tenous than these people would have us believe!

The belief, that we humans can 'engineer' the earth and bend it to our expectations is exactly, what got us into this mess in the first place. How about re-engineering ourselves instead for the better?

What, are you saying we tried to "engineer the earth" with the industrial revolution? Are you trying to "engineer the earth" when you drive your car? No, before now I don't think anyone (of consequence) has been trying to "engineer the earth" in the sence of the entire globe we live on.

Now, quite obviously, we have the capability to "engineer the earth" (in relatively minor ways) even though any such project would be huge (maybe Terra$'s). The problem is that we only have one system to test on and no Live CD with which to fix a misstake. But at some point we may very well find our selves in a situation where an option seems "safe enough" relative the consequences of inaction. Not researching these "options" because you're afraid of the consequences is just stupid.

"Engineering ourselves" on the other hand is something we have been doing since, well, I don't know - who first said "think what kind of children these two would have?"? And recently we are doing it more concretely to win basketball games. But in a larger sence than that no one has a clue what the heck "for the better" would be. Though I have my theories.

While I definately like courts to keep drivers of heavy vehicles on a short leash, I have to point out that there are levels of inattentiveness and levels of difficullt situations.. It'd hardly seem reasonable to send someone to prison for life for blinking twice in a situation where he might have avoided an accident had he blinked once. And surely noone would claim they can maintain the same maximum level of attentiveness throughout a two hour or so, ride?? I think it is very difficullt to judge in such cases unless you can prove something concrete sa. intoxication or cellphone usage. I doubt there're many reliable witnesses.
