  1. We'll wish we had standardized. on FCC Chairman Warns of Wireless Spectrum Gap · · Score: 1

What is going to happen? We will wish that we had standardized on gsm or something so that we could get the most efficient use from the spectrum. Congress's rush to sell spectrum for a windfall will come back to haunt us. This is what happens when policy makers don't really understand what they are making policy about.

  2. Credit Card on 72% of Banks Say Their Employees Committed Fraud · · Score: 1

This weekend there was an article in the travel section of NYT about how US credit cards are being denigned in Europe because we don't use Smart Card with pins to prevent fraud. The US credit card rep said it was because fraud was not such an issue in the US. HaHa. They are also in denial about that also or they just don't want to admit it.

  3. We can only hope so. on New Bill Proposes Open Source Requirement for Publicly Funded Books · · Score: 1

Did some work for a publisher back in the 90's before CD-R's replaced books. The Publisher which will remain nameless but has initials (PH) seemed very concerned about certain content. Namely a particular cartoon Egg character and a male figure wearing a purple shirt. The Egg which had no gender or genitalia need clothes and of course the purple shirt might imply the male was somewhat less than manly. If you think books are too expensive it is because a lot of effort goes into issue such as these.

  7. Unschooling == No Schooling on Schooling, Homeschooling, and Now, "Unschooling" · · Score: 1

As much as I hated school, found it boring and resented stupid teachers I find this idea totally alarming. Learning to press on through boring material is a skill. It is learned. And it is necessary to be successful at virtually anything. If you only pursue something while it is interesting you will always quit and find the next new thing which holds the instant gratification of being more interesting because you haven't hit the boring aspects of it yet. I also think this totally misses the added value of a skilled teacher that observes your conceptual road blocks and tries to figure out ways to help you around them. Certain things are more quickly learned through repetion and don't hold much intrinsic value or deep meaning. Many of these boring things are necessary to get to a level that has those qualities. It is simply more efficient to do the grind. This sounds like a recipe for prep[aring a 30 year old with a kindergarden mentality.

  12. The government set it up to be expensive. on US Cell Phone Plans Among World's Most Expensive · · Score: 2, Insightful

The companies bought bandwidth from the government with borrowed money. They now have to pay back. Just consider it another tax. Also the government refused to standardize. We are now stuck with a bunch of incompatible networks which prevents real competition between service providers. The cheaper countries did not do this. They lease the bandwidth for reasonable sums and set standards so that providers really compete. Hence lower prices.

I as a loyal Google customer want my needs to be served regardless of what happens to MS (which btw I do not care to use).

But as usual it will all be alot of what if, maybe that. I grew up during the cold war. Russia was portrayed as this unstoppable juggernaut. The reality was that it was all smoke an mirrors. Their system colapsed mostly on its own, simply because it was unworkable. Most of this hype is thrown out by people who stand to make large sums of money by "protecting us." 25. It always the greed thing on Hulu May Begin Charging For Video Content · · Score: 1

When cable first came out and they wanted you to subscribe there was a lot of content with limited interuption. Now there is no difference between cable and free TV except you can pay extra for not being interupted at all (HBO etc). The media companies have not come to terms with the fact that their properties are not as valuable as they use to be. There are other entertainment options like gaming that are attracting peoples attention. It is not that money is not being spent, it is being spent on more and various other things that people find entertaining. The larger companies are finding it hard to adopt hence Sony's call for internet guard rails. Their business models are kaput and they are to big to fail I mean change:0 All I can say is good luck with that. I think we are looking at the next GMs.
