  1. not ready for prime time... on Is Linux Out of Touch With the Average User? · · Score: 1

    in short, yes....

linux just isn't ready for prime time for a number of reasons....but it all boils down to 2 main areas where linux fails(it's getting better though)....compatibility and support

the average user wants guarantees that linux just can't provide. they want their hardware to work without having to scour the net for a driver that may or may not exist. i recently installed fiesty fawn on my laptop and everything went increadably smooth up until i tried to connect to the net (wirelessly). and guess what? it didn't work. that to me was a bummer. that to Joe Average is unacceptable and a deal breaker.

the average user wants to be able to play $NEW_POPULAR_FPS or $NEW_POPULAR_RPG on his new computer. unfortunately, without windows this is rarely an option. again, to me, bummer i gotta reboot to windows or run through emulation. to Joe Average, unacceptable and a deal breaker.

the average user wants all websites and the content they host to be viewable at all times. again, without IE, wmv/asp support in the default browser, this is not an option. again, Joe Average won't have it.

the average user wants to be "safe" and up to date with software that auto updates. to me, i know how to stay current, with the exception of the Sony/BMG rootkit, i haven't had an infection since 1998. Joe Average doesn't want to be bothered installing patches, compiling kernels and what not. he just wants it to fix itself. windows update, the illusion of safety maybe, but it's a good illusion.

the average user wants to know someone is there to help if they need it. and no, i'm not talking about some nerd like you or i on an internet forum. Joe Average wants 24/7/365 tech/app support. he wants someone to slowly walk him through solving the issue. i understand red hat and a few others offer support, but it costs $ and that detracts from the allure of free software and most apps that would be installed on the box would not include any support.

I'm only 26 and I'm still at my first job out of college. I work for a dept. of the state of NJ and have an awesome benefits package. I recently went to the ER for stitches and I paid $25 for my visit. A few weeks later I got a summary of the billing and it was as follows...

    Total bill from hospital: $1600+
    My co-pay: $25
    Insurance paid: $360

Now, how can that be? The insurance company, which undoubtedly is filthy stinking rich, gets a "bulk rate" of less then 1/4 of the total bill? WTF!?!?! It boggles my mind. What if I didn't have insurance? Do i owe the full $1600? I understand that if you can't pay it, you get help, but at what cost? Debt for the rest of your life? What if I can afford to pay, but don't have insurance? Do they let me off with only paying less then 1/4 of the full price?...i doubt it!...

Seems like the best way to fix this problem would be to make these scumbags(read: insurance companies) pony up the full amount billed.

Q: Is euphoria a physics engine? A: No, euphoria is not a physics engine. euphoria simulates the human (or animal) motor nervous system on Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3 and PC. One can think of it as biology meeting robot control theory. euphoria integrates with a game's existing physics engine, which provides the basic body physics (commonly known as 'ragdoll physics'). euphoria adds life to the dead physics simulation. they would re-work the psp. shrink it down a little, add another analog on the right, and either dump the umd drive entirely for a hd or start selling psps with a big memory stick in the box(>=4gig). with a decent d/l service, it would be everything that apple is trying to turn the ipod into and more with the addition of running ps2 quality games on a screen that is far superior!

i'll probably get modded a troll for this as i was last week for questioning the crazy demand for the wii even though the games are seriously lacking, but i feel it has to be said...for the $, the ipod is currently pretty low on the list of good buys as far as mp3 players go. i believe apple has been lucky to be able ride the ipod wave as long as it has. and unless they open the iphone up, it is going to fail miserably.

my $200 sanyo phone has a gig hdd in it with 8+ hours of play time, a 2 mega pixel camera, unlimited ev-d0 net access, and o yea, i can call people on it too!

The point of a bigger hard drive is more space to hold data. Shouldn't have had to answer that...

Yes, people really are downloading that much content.

Yes, downloaded movies really are that popular and its not that surprising why when you think about it. I like many 360 owners have a HDTV, but I, like most, do not have the HD-DVD add-on or a stand alone player. Therefore the only ways currently for me and many others to watch a high-def movie on my high-def tv is to:
    a) catch one on cable when its airing or DVR it
    b) download one, be it on my cable box(ON-DEMAND) or my 360 it does not matter.
Both have the same policies on viewing and pricing(same as renting from a store, without the trip), only their selections differ.

You may not see the reason for this, and that is why M$/Sony gives you the option to pay less $ for a system that doesn't include a HD or, in Sony's case, includes a smaller less expensive HD.
