Yea those darn security guards. Wouldn't be so bad if they just stayed in the shops, but they insist on moving in with us and making sure we use the product appropriately and let no one else use it who didn't pay for it. My kids really hate them. They like to "crack" jokes at the guards and have silly nicknames for them like "dongle." I know, my kids are weird. Those security tags are a pain too, I wish they'd just take them off at the store and not leave them on my clothing to get snagged on every thing I walk by. They itch too. Price of doing business I guess. But hey there are real thieves out there!

The more intelligent people in the world today are less and less involved in the political process. It's corrupt and nonfunctional. Religious extremists have filled the gap and are worsening the system with antiquated thinking. Bring on the singularity. If man can create something in his own image but superior to god's previous effort, that's a pretty convincing argument for the non-existence of god. Or a living embodiment of god for those that simply cannot deal with the truth. Short of aliens landing, I can think of nothing else that would so conclusively destroy the persistent superstitions of the last few millenia, or at the very least, ground us in some new ones. If we could at least query god like a database, we might be able to get shit done. And even if we get wiped out by Skynet, as far as apocalypses go, WWIII was such a boring alternative anyway.

Actually that is what I'm talking about. Not necessarily as cheap as DVD-+Rs, but something real cheap that doesn't require swapping out discs that you'd write to only once and read from for the rest of it's life. If it's for movies/music then it isn't as though you're going to be reading the same part of the disk constantly (unless you wanted to watch Caddyshack 1000+ times, and actually I may have done that by now). Solid state HDs would probably be better for this task and they're only going to get cheaper. And I'm not trying to be lazy here, it would just be really cool to have a library of personal media that was easily accessible and completely indexed and tagged with rich media meta-data. Something to sync your iPod to or serve your house's many terminals. Until I can buy a digital jukebox at which I can throw spindles of DVD-Rs with random media formats, I can't really have such a system without terabytes of hot storage.

Seems most people, aside from those who do video production, really only need large amounts of space to serve/store media. Be cool to just keep a 200 gig SATA for regular use and just keep buying these suckers and fillin' them up for all that media. Later, when they're cheap that is.

Pick up Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. I didn't play it earlier on the GC or PS2, so it was completely fresh to me anyway, but I really think the Wiimote is flat out perfect for that series. I always thought the RE series was boring, but it's great on the Wii. I haven't played any of the other shooters for Wii (they're all rehashed and uninspiring to me), but the Wiimote sure does work well for the close quarters tense zombie combat of RE4. For what it is, it's nearly a perfect game really. Of course I haven't played the new Metroid (which I didn't even know was out yet), so it may well be the best game yet. I agree the Wii really needs some more titles, but at least when the titles do come and they work, they're not only fun, but innovatively so. I have a pretty good idea what Halo 3 will play like, Wii games are more exciting to me though. ...

In fact, I just watched some preview movies of Metroid and it looks damn cool.

There was something about Bill Gates and Microsoft at the end of one of Jared Diamond's books (Gun Germs & Steel I think) and how they implemented one of his theories about geographical fragmentation and state power. Something about how China stagnated while Europe flourished, and there being an optimum group size when tackling problems, a technique which MS chose to implement in its software development. Looks like they've overshot that balance. Kinda like the US Intelligence community in recent times. Where are the project managers?

Why not take a note from actual software development and give licenses an inheritance hierarchy? I've always thought it was stupid that EULAs aren't standardized to a certain extent. If everyone knew a general EULA quite well, then companies could just state where their EULA differs from this common-knowledge EULA, instead of blindly clicking ok, consequences be damned. Same process could be applied to middleware licenses. One could even develope a license format whereby you could compile the various licenses among your project's components into one final license with most of its redundancy (hopefully) trimmed out. Of course, legalese was pretty much developed to obscure any such process and its strength is in its (evil) complexity. What a mess.

Those stories are a bummer, but the roads, now that's something we can discuss and discuss. And there's a solution. We'll take care of that with our new program which will be implemented over the next 20 years by private contractors beholden to no one with no oversight (or the whole program cancelled prematurely upon the next cycling of leadership).

You know, like gay marriage, or illegal immigration. Issues that kinda need a solution, but not really. Just debate. So long as we're not talking about foreign policy or the erosion of our rights, or energy policy. You know, stuff that matters. That stuff's a drag.

There are a lot of knee-jerk reactions here from those of us frustrated with spam to the point of zero-tolerance, but think about it this way. It isn't as though spam will be going anywhere anytime soon. It's not like there is some great new solution out there and the practice of spam is on its way out. It is something that will probably be with us indefinitely. May even get worse. So who cares if someone starts spamming revolutionary ideas? The overall volume of spam will not increase significantly, and maybe a few poor slobs will be enlightened about the wackiness of their government. No different than handing out pamplets really.

Personally I don't see the point of it, the people need to take care of their own government (that's why the US gov sucks so much, we the lazy), and take it down if necessary. It's up to them. We'd be better off spamming our own leaders to keep us the hell out of these ridiculous countries. You know it's called "writing your congressman." Fat lot of good that does either.
