Obviously you never read Kotaku. I like the site and read it daily, but they do post a lot of trivial nonsense on it. It's less a gaming news site, and more a true to form blog than anything else. Which is fine really, but while the bad gamer tattoos and game mascot Jackolanterns of late are amusing, the worst items are probably the authors' daily thoughts posting about the minutia of their exciting lives as game bloggers. I haven't yet been able to read through one of those posts completely as they seem to pride themselves on being as irrelevant as possible. Oh well, that's what that old scroll wheel is for and it sure gets a work out on Kotaku.

Of course, why this ever made it to /. is another story. Kotaku has gossip on the latest console hardware failures all the time, so I don't know why this apparently meritless court case is any more interesting.

IIRC stength varies with the square of the size of a thing. That's why giant ants in B-movies are a dumb concept. You can have itty bitty scorpions with huge claws they can carry around effortlessly, but once you start getting larger and larger you need to have more scorpion body not just to have that thing remain attached, but to be able to carry the thing around and be able to use it. I would think you'd want to be able to manipulate a huge claw pretty effortlessly for it to be of any use, otherwise it'd just be holding you back, and to do so you'd need big scorpion muscles. Although the thing is in the water so that could give you some leeway on weight, but still you'd need a big body to be able swing the claw around and not have it swing you.

I read about the original story linked from rotten. It's quite a long read. Megan, the suicide, in typical junior high fashion had just ended her friendship with the girl a week prior, who then along with her mother proceeded to manipulate Megan via a fake MySpace account, pretending to be an attractive young man. Megan was apparently a bit of a heffer and embarassingly naive. The whole family was involved in this charade. While I can't really shed a tear for someone so woefully out of touch with reality as to let someone taunt her through an online social networking site (sigh) and over the course of a few hours wear her down to the point of suicide, what these people did was vindictive and malicious. Megan's family even visited the accused family's house after Megan's suicide, and went to the girl's birthday to show some solidarity with what they had though were old friends. These people didn't bother to fess up. The truth only came out after another girl, who carpooled with them and who had been invited to join in on the joke, later told the family herself.

There's more in the story, but basically these people knew they did something pretty bad. There's no law against it, and really there shouldn't be ridiculous laws to protect the thin-skinned, but what these people did was wrong and someone should raise a bit of a stink about it. I remember another story a few months back about how blogs and social networking sites have brought back something we have a deficiency of in modern life. Public shaming.

Here's the kicker, folks: when you put up the personal information of one person in the house, you put everyone ELSE there, at risk. Even their neighbors. See, they were neighbors, all of them. Thing is, not many people on the street even knew what went down surrounding the suicide. This'll probably change that. I'd sure like to know if I had neighbors who were no more grown-up or socially adjusted than their own petty teenage daughter. The whole thing is kind of ironic anyway. What we have essentially are asshole bloggers being outted by other asshole bloggers. I for one am glad they're out if for no other reason than it lends a bit of closure to an otherwise somewhat unsatisfying lifetime-worthy sap story that ate up one of my lunchtimes last week.

As Colbert, Stewart, and Mahr have all said, though Colbert rarely breaks character long enough to do so, their shows are purely entertainment and shouldn't be taken seriously. That people are able to glean more important information about politics/world affairs from these shows rather than the major national "news" outlets is incidental and more of a indication of how screwed the whole media situation currently is. The minute they start being really earnest you'll just wind up with the equivalent of a bizarro Rush Limbaugh/O'Reily Factor type of show and that won't help anyone. Despite being perceived as uber-liberal, I think they all do a good job of presenting boths sides of an issue as equally ridiculous and if you're really interested in what is being discussed you can go out yourself and gather more information from more appropriate sources. That is the value of these shows beyond their entertainment and really they shouldn't aim for anything more. Colbert does have important people on his show, but there is a fine line between being an entertainer and just being a liberal pedagogue. His being an ass the whole time somehow grounds the show and keeps things from getting too preachy. If it annoys the viewer, that's probably a good indication you've got their attention for what is being discussed.

I still haven't upgraded it and I can play all the Source Engine games (even TF2) quite acceptably. I can't imagine I can enjoy the best out of Bioshock with it (yea that's right I haven't played Bioshock yet), and Crysis is probably out of the question.

I might pick up this card after reading the article, although they mention AMD has their new cards coming shortly so there might be a better deal around the corner still! Point is though, this cheapo $50 card I bought almost a year ago has lasted me much longer then I had thought it would.

This is was kills me. Here MS has a free and open source program running on their own old hardware with all of the features that people would want in a HTPC. The blueprint is right there, just build it. I heard Bill Gates was shown a copy of it running on a modded XBox once and I thought for sure they would just add all of its functionality to the 360. I mean if I could just play divx/xvid over SMB with a 360 without any MCE or other proprietary garbage running on my PC, I'd buy a 360 tomorrow. MS will never succeed in the HTPC space because they are obsessed with owning formats, even moreso than Sony. There is absolutely no need for Windows Media formats. I mean, the iPod would never have been a success if it were AAC only. People don't think in wma, they think "mp3." And they don't download wmv, they download divx.

I mean I love my XBMC, and I blows the mind of anyone I show it to. People would love XBMC. The people behind that project really should talk to someone about building a set top box with XBMC on it. If it can run on XBox hardware how expensive could something like that be? Something like AppleTV but with XBMC running on it. I can't believe how much use I've gotten out of my old XBox with XBMC, much more time than I ever spent playing games on it. I only wish it had more horsepower to handle the future HD formats coming out, but I don't have a new tv yet anyway. Seeing as how Sony and MS can't get their heads out of their asses wrt to what people really want in a HTPC, looks like I'll just be moving to my own built HTPC, running whatever XBMC will be called once they port it to Linux.

I just don't get you 360 owners. I'm really not trying to troll here, it's a decent system (when it doesn't break down), but it really doesn't have an interesting console game library. Crackdown seems pretty solid, there's one for you. And while Mass Effect doesn't appeal to me I know people are pining for it. Although Bioware was just bought by EA so expect that one to go multiplatform. PGR and Forza really should just be folded into one series, and while they're solid titles, racing games are like assholes (every console has them.. wait broken analogy). As for the remainder you can play most all of those games on PC (with the exception of GoW and Halo 3, but only for the time being), with arguably a better (mouse/kb) experience for the FPS games. Skate's the only game I'm really interested in your little list, and that's EA multiplatform anyway.

In a 360, you really just have a glorified PC, and yet less reliable (imagine how fast Dell would go out of business with those failure rates). It isn't even as though it's much cheaper to go with consoles anymore, as you're already likely to have a PC to start with so why not just throw that money at a decent video card and a gamepad. If all Microsoft is going to offer is typical PC games on their console then why bother anyway? I'm not even saying PS3 or Wii has a better library, but everyone needs to stop fellating Microsoft as if the 360 is anything beyond a console with a decent online experience (another thing found on a PC, and for free) with a year lead in the marketplace with frankly not much to show for it. We should all demand better from all these console makers. Meanwhile I'll just stick with my PC until someone gives me a reason to buy another console.
