Man, I really love this kind of comments. I've seen a few like this of yours. I think you're a nice writer. Do you do any writing professional or otherwise? You should.
AFAIK this is not illegal in the EU. I believe that carriers offer better conditions to people that bring their own unlocked phones simply because it benefits them.
Al least in Spain it's this way. It seems logical to me (that they give you better conditions if you bring your own phone) since you don't have to pay the phone to the carrier.
In my carrier, for instance, I get the same rates as people who get their phone from them but, unlike them, I can terminate my contract at any time without any penalties. I can take my number to any company that offers me better prices at any time.
Eurosport internet streaming service also uses it. Why? I don't know. Maybe MS promised them it had better DRM than flash.
Note that this is a service which is streaming only. You can't (at least legally, and I still haven't found a way to do it legally or otherwise) download any content to play offline.
Quick! someone save this post for the eternity! I can't believe someone actually used "loose" correctly on an internet forum.
By the way...when did this thing start? I started using the internet fifteen years ago and back then people used lose and loose correctly, at least it wasn't that bad as it is now.
You may argue that the majority using/writing a word a certain way makes it correct (language evolves and so on...) but I learnt it the other way (English is not my native language) and it feels wrong to me.
By the way, nice post:)
If Apple requires a Mac computer for developing for iOS Microsoft requires a Windows OS for developing for Windows Phone.
It seems very unlikely that this is going to change, since, as you probably know everything MS does is tied to Windows.
So the only major phone OS that lets you develop on several platforms is Android (WebOS, Meego and others may be that way too but they're not mainstream)
As much as I'd like reactos to become a success I think it's very unlikely. They have a massive task ahead of them, and unlike linux they don't have a bunch of companies paying people to develop the OS.
Besides that, not many people is qualified to develop an OS and to top it off they seem to have very few developers.
I'm not against them I just find very difficult for they to succeed.
It's not that hard. You just have to lower your expectations. It sounds sad but it's true. It's the only way us not rich-and-or-handsome men can get girls.
Good luck.
Nokia aren't gonna stop making s40 dumbphones. They just said they would stop making s60 smartphones and start making WP7 ones.
So, they have the low end covered.
What I don't see clearly is what they're gonna do with the midlevel (hardware-wise) phones. They could run s60 quite happily since is not resource intensive but if I'm not mistaken WP7 requires pretty powerful hardware to run.
Wow! Two microsoft-favoring first comments (http://apple.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2033736&cid=35458946) on two stories pitting microsoft vs the competition.
Do the pay you much?
...I don't think it'd be practical. How are you going to emulate keyboard and mouse input? I don't think even emulating a gamepad on a touchscreen works well.
Anyway, let them try...if they can make it work good for them
...the hardware might be nice but the software is not up to the task. At least that's what they said on the review of the Toshiba Libretto. They said Windows 7 is built to be used with a mouse and using a touchscreen instead of it is not a very good idea.
I'd call torcs semi-realistic. It's definitely not an arcade racer but the physics don't reach the level of something like GTR Evolution or rFactor.
For the moment speed dreams hasn't made too many changes to TORCS so they are pretty much the same
I know this doesn't work in the US but the solution is buying the phones unsubsidized directly from the manufacturers. In Europe is not that uncommon and many carriers have cheaper rates if you bring your unlocked phone. It ends up saving you money in the long run.
Anyway, for some models that might not even be possible in the US. In this case I really like the european model better
...it gets tired after a continuous effort. I personally find that I can only concentrate on one task for about 30 minutes. Then I have to rest for a while doing simpler tasks like reading slashdot:).
One thing I've found now that I'm involved in two projects is that when I have to deal with both on the same day my brain gets significantly more tired...so context switching IT IS expensive:).
Now I try to do things belonging to one project one day, to the other the next day and so on.
In Spain we have this levy for blank media but not only CD and DVD but also USB flash sticks, memory cards, hard disks and doesn't end there: It also applies to Optical media recorders and MP3 players. If you can read Spanish it's explained here http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_por_copia_privada_(Espa%C3%B1a).
And after all of this you'd think this would legalize filesharing....it doesn't. This is supposedly a compensation for "private copy" which is something like making a copy from the original media for your personal use (for example copying an audio cd you bought to use it in the car and prevent the original one to get damaged).
Of course the politicians are in bed with the intellectual rights societies (SGAE is the most important here) so this is unlikely to get better in the coming years.
I believe this is not the most important reason why one or the other will be selected. The website makers are the ones who decide which technology will be used to play video any I believe many of them don't like many things that HTML5 offers:
The url of the video is right there facilitating the download of the video and hence potentially reducing the number of future visits to the site. With flash you can at least try to obscure the real url of the file (whether this works that's another debate)
The browser and not the website owner controls how the video displays, the interface shown to the user
DRM: I don't think you can do this with HTML5 video, you certainly can with Flash
Well, I already knew that. The pages might be downloaded as image files on the browser's cache or they might be only on its memory or whatever...but what I meant is that they don't seem to provide an easy and/or obvious way to get the content downloaded to a file on your pc. I just wanted a "Download this issue" button.
I've taken a look and while it's very nice they put the issues online It'd be nice if you could download them. I haven't found an obvious way to do it. I guess that's the way the google displayed books work
It was very obviously a port of the PS2 version since it had its crappy textures and the non interactive parts where video files (like in the PS2) instead of being rendered in-engine (as in the original Gamecube game).
I guess the reason it that many games had been ported from the PS2 to PC and very few (any?) from the Gamecube and hence porting from the PS2 version was fast(er) and cheap(er)
Do not type google into google. You could break the Internet!!!

I love slashdot because of comments like this. Where else are you going to find such delicious mostly useless information of old computers? :)
has some submarine patents related to it. Thank you, thank you!

I thought that was the Wii...

the judges in cases like these?

Wow! Most insightful comment I've ever read regarding piracy. If I had mod points I'd give you two :)
