    As other european guys have said things here over Europe work a little differently. In Spain al least things are more or like like this:
    • You can "buy" subsidized phones from the cellphone companies at very small prices but, of course, they are locked to the carrier (neverthless they can be unlocked at many places cheaply) and you have pretty high rates. This is similar to the situation a the US.
    • You can buy the phones completely unlocked. You do have to pay the phone full price upfront but:
      • Since there's one standard that is used everywhere in Europe you can use your phone with every company just swap the SIM card.
      • Many carriers offer cheaper prices if you bring your own phone.

    So you really have a choice.

    They can't just embed VLC. VLC doesn't play any royalties for H264, hence Firefox would be open to lots of legal nightmares

    They say they didn't test the default symbian browser since it was too simple compared with the others and unable to finish some tests.
    I wonder which phone were they using...since the included browser on my nokia 5800 it's pretty good: Pages render pretty well, it supports javascript and even flash works pretty well (it uses flash lite which works with most flash objects)

    Being the PS3 at 300$ the Wii looked a bit expensive at 250$. I know it's been said to death but I hope the Motion Plus really improves the precision of the control because with the regullar controllers it feels it's not precise enough for many games.
    Maybe it will change with the new PS3 motion controllers and Project Natal but it seems this generation is really divided in terms of hardcore/casual games. It seems most of the hardcore games go to the PS3 and the X360 and that the Wii gets mostly casual games.

    yes, Lara is a female but that's wrong because they made her too beautiful. Well, I really have to give this one to the PC whiners since male videogame heroes are completely average guys: skinny and ugly

    If you really got comfortable playing RE4 with a keyboard you must be the only person to do so :).
    Everyone bitched forever that the game was unplayable with a keyboard...I've never tried but it must not be easy. Luckyly I played with a PS2 controller and I actually found no fault with the PC port (other than the not in engine cutscenes).
    OTOH I played console emulators with the keyboard for years and found that most games played well with the keyb. What I can't deny is that usually for console games the gamepad is more confortable and better for your hands

    What does android has that linux doesn't?
    Linux has more software than android and if we're talking about familiarity the linux desktop is closer to windows than android.
    The android netbooks will be cheaper than the windows ones but, again, if that hasn't helped linux I don't see how it's going to help android.
    I'd like to see the microsoft dominance in the os market broken as much as anyone but I don't have much hope this is going to do it.

    Hi. I don't know if you'll ever read this but... What are the mental problems you felt? I've had memory and reasoning (things like logical thinking, reading comprehension...) for about 3 years now and I haven't been able to find a cause.
    I know I've been snoring for a while but I didn't even thought of relating it to my thinking difficulties.
    I've recorded myself a couple of nights now and there's just snoring I didn't hear myself struggling to breath or something like that.
    Anyway, whether you read this or not thank you so much. You've given me a new path to investigate. I'm going to have this evaluated soon. Thanks!

    Not fully solar but I don't see why a mixed solar/pluggable electric could not work. Moreover, I believe it would be a good idea: You charge the batteries with the sun as much as you can and the rest comes from the grid

    You can never know what's going to happen with this but Eclipse and Netbeans being arch rivals I fear about the future of Netbeans.
    It's the Java IDE I like most and I'd hate it go away.Yes, I know it's open source but Sun pays most of the people who develop it and it'd never been so big without their help.

    A standard (even if it's a de facto one) API for physics would mean more developers would consider it and gamers would be happy because it'd work with all cards.
    I guess Nvidia would gain money through licensing and AMD/ATI...I don't know, do they stand to lose anything because of this?
    Besides that, physx is available for the PS3 and (I believe) the Wii so it would be a (more or less) universal API for physics acceleration.

    I don't know about the other areas but in J2EE servers you can push Glassfish
    It's the Sun J2EE server, it has support and is used by several imporant enterprises. Read here
    And I do not work for Sun :)

    The PC version of RE4 obviously was (a port of) a console game...and the slowness/difficulty on aiming was part of the game. If you could aim precisely and fast with a mouse it'd be too easy.
    I agree that they should've made clear that the game requires a gamepad with analog knobs to play but other than that there's nothing else to complain about the controls of the PC version.
    And yes, the cutscenes not being on engine is a bummer.

    What you say might have to do something with its price...but given that "vanilla" ebook readers like this are sold for close to 300 euro, I think the majority of the cost is due to the eink technology itself.
    I am waiting for the 10 inch readers to come out and come down in price (I know it's far away...but a man can dream)

    Wow...this post really touched something inside me.
    When I was a child I didn't like to interact with people so I isolated myself even more. I only talked to people that were similar to me.
    Nowadays I'm not incredibly popular but I'm in a better situation. In dinners, parties I'm usually able to talk to people and have nice conversations.
    How did I get better? I'm not really sure..but I've had the luck of having a friend that appreciates me and is socially more capable than me so that has helped me get into a lot of parties and groups of people and to learn social skills.
    I understand you.It's *not* easy and there are no golden rules but try to be positive, try to find common interests. Things like TV, popular music, movies are nice. I don't know what else to say but try it..if it goes ok :) it pays off. Good luck.

    About two years ago I started to have problems to sleep. It started mild but it became serious insomnia
    Since that was not normal I started to research on the internet. The more I read the more horrible possible causes I found and the more worried I got. The more worried I got the worse I felt(It's really incredible what your state of mind can do to your "physical" body!)...go to step one. It was a vicious circle.
    In the end I was diagnosed a depression with anxiety and that's what it was.
    Obviously it was not the internet that caused my problems but reading about diseases didn't do me good.
    It's good it all ended

    I see by the slashdot summary that they mean 12 in. or 13 in. ultraportables. Yes, as they say, they're expensive but in my limited undestanding I think it's because the design, material and certain components (e.g.: ultra slim dvd drives)..not because the processor.
    So is there a market for this kind of processor? Only time will tell but I don't think so.

    This is usually the case ...but at a friend's house I saw a DVB-T decoder box that showed the image instantly after you changed the channel but until the next reference frame arrived you would see some funky colors. I know this looks ugly but it would be nice if it was at least an option on other decoders

    You have been moderated funny and I don't know about your original intention...but I sort of agree with you.
    I really like the look of the PT cruiser; it looks elegant, classic...
    I find modern cars (the ones I can afford anyway (below 20K â)) too rounded and full of curvy shapes.IMO it makes them look like toys. The korean ones are the worst offenders.
    I guess I am in the minority. It sucks.

    Can't tell you about other places but in Spain VAT it's basically 16% for everything save for some "first necessity" products for which is 7%.
    So we do know the amount of taxes we are paying.
    Moreover, everywhere you state the price of a good you're required to say whether taxes are included in the price listed (They usually are).
