  1. Technology was supposed to... on Robots Help Manufacturing Recover Without Adding Jobs · · Score: 1

It wasn't always like this. Keynes, for instance, believed (along with others) that advances in technology would allow people to work much less and enjoy life more.
We've said it here so many times it's worn through, but technology was supposed to spread out the benefits, allow less work and more enjoyment of life, not widening gap of fear and grasping where neither the rich NOR the poor seem happy with what they have.

There are some great books to kickstart the brain on this, I find Tom Hodgkinson's "How to Be Idle" and "The Idler's Companion" are good places to pause and ponder, a good launching point.

We need a major shift in the way people think about work, running themselves into the ground. A major cultural shift. What I fear is that mankind will keep on the way it has: Letting millions starve when there's more than enough to go around, competing and making various ***ocracies.

On the other hand, one might consider reading that "Rat Race and Why You Need It" book (or whatever it's called) for some counterpoint.

Advance in technology is good, I don't want to come across as a luddite here, but can't there be a middle ground? Isn't it supposed to be a social net to catch those displaced but a rapidly advancing society?

Maybe a bit off topic, but...
I spoke with someone recently who expressed concern about algorithms relating to self-driving cars, not just laws. When start having computers written to decide who gets a fine, for instance, self-driving cars will have safety algorithms which, depending on how a crash goes, are likely to have to decide at some point who stays safe and who doesn't in an inevitable crash.

So, what are the limits of computer code in these situations?

it's not just that. The rare earths in China don't have to be refined as much as the stuff found pretty much everywhere else on earth. I don't remember the term, but a metallurgist friend explained it to me once, saying that hands down China is at the front of the pack because of this.

So, I'd be interested to know if the rare earths (and I know, there are many substances under that umbrella) found here are of a similar purity to the ones in China or the ones in the States.

Water, some tea or a little coffee sometimes.

I eat paleo at work unless we're treated to lunch. Even then , go for mostly meat and veggies.

Also, isometrics. Tense muscles *as hard as possible* for 10-20 seconds. Do that a couple times and hour every other day or so and I have to say it's not too bad, seemingly. Then I go home and get some exercise in a few times a week, yoga a couple times a week. Maybe hiking or walking, something slow and steady, on weekends ideally.

I love all that junk food, but I guess I like being in shape more. Also, cutting out the crud seems to keep my energy up. I can't imagine being strung out on coffee and sugary stuff all the time. Since I went mostly paleo about a year ago I'm less moody, which is great.

    Good luck!

I want to cockpunch (and I mean stretch the thing out, lay it on a slab, and punch it) repeatedly the moneygrubbers on this one. Actually, fact might be it's the investors doing it. More profit!
