That's my guess.
or they just realize that if they pass on it someone else will just do the job instead
um, no. slander/libel has to be proven to do harm, and this does not apply to average joe. rock stars or movie stars sometimes, but not typically a neighbor.
Just an anecdote: I once had (if I recall correctly) a Triple Dumbass (6 shots of espresso?), a chait tea, and an ENORMOUS (ten scoops of ice cream?) ice cream sundae at a place called Kaffeine in Evanston, IL. Life wasn't going so well, so a friend joined me and we chatted, somehow I thought it a good idea to ingest as much caffeine as possible.
I felt messed up after that in a way I've not felt since then (and that's saying something). Like I was going to have a seizure. Literal tremors, paranoia, like my brain was on fire.
I am OCD something fierce when it comes to smudges. I will get nearly nothing done ALL DAY because I will spend it cleaning the surface. It's a chief reason why I do not own a tablet, nor do I ever want to. I keep a lense cloth with me at all times for my glasses.
Yes, I know it's a little crazy, but I am certain there are others on slashdot like me... erm... right people? Hello?
Start groups? Absolutely. When I have a discussion with a "feminist" (whatever that is these days) I will often say that women had their revolution in the sixties, but I wonder when men will finally have theirs. They just laugh at me and think I'm an idiot, but for at least a decade I've seen what appears to be troubling gender issues that need resolving, and that includes men's rights.
Quickly: Ostracized for being too smart, or for exercising it in ways that aren't acceptable to those around you? Sometimes it's better to hold one's tongue around the boss and find other ways to get one's ideas out there. But yeah, people can be intimidated by "smart". Isn't it our responsibility, then, to find ways of making that work for us with others, instead of against us, rather than simply saying other people are dumb? Seems like a way to minimize other people's contributions and boost our own from a certain point of view.
Partner selection: Less of a concern? I assume you found someone in college or at work, then, especially since you are in a field often dominated by men. So, you had your pick of the lot essentially? Not everyone gets that opportunity.
Next: First, "risk their ego"? That's a pretty broad assumption that I find a little offensive, even as a man who has a very smart and successful partner. There are so many reasons one could choose a particular partner. Frankly, it's tough to meet people in the first place, people only have so much time in the day and in their lives, so choosing who will be one's partner is harder than simply going to a supermarket to pick one up (maybe not in your case). Some people simply end up with someone who isn't totally optimal; Love is a powerful thing. Maybe they fell in love and pulled the trigger in the first 30 days. Maybe the guy has a fetish for nice feet or red hair or green eyes or big butts and his sex drive overrides his better judgement. Hell, I have a friend who is not entirely compatible with his wife, but one big reason he loves her is that she allows him to dress like a woman around the house. Incredibly beautiful, smart, successful couple. Would he complain about his wife a little to co-worker? Maybe. Admit his sexual needs to a coworker? No. Or maybe these men's prospects with women didn't seem so great at the time and, hey, any port in a storm.
Second, I find this supposed-scenario (see #3 below) a little denigrating toward these husbands' wives. I'm sure those women bring great things to the table, but the grass is always greener right? I have a smart, well-to-do partner... but no one is perfect and sometimes I do wish for something else. Are these men simply not appreciative of what their wives bring to the table? Are they simply making small talk at work? Maybe they feel your husband needs an ego boost and they're being friendly, or maybe he's a superior and they feel a desire to make him look good at their expense because that's what people in social hierarchies do sometimes. Are they simply human for seeing something from afar (I'm sure your relationship with your partner isn't all peaches and cream all the time) and viewing only the good parts (i.e. these men are only human)?
Third, your gentleman-engineer partner might just be talking down how these men speak, making himself sound wise and smart and awesome (the basics make him sound condescending, but I'm sure reality is more forgiving than that) while other men (potential mates evolution-wise) look less attractive. Bad act by him? Not necessarily. Natural? Totally. You're only getting one point of view, his, and I challenge you to ask each of these men about these interaction with your husband to discover their viewpoint and how they really think about their own relationships.
Fourth... oh so many factors. Did these wives give up careers to care for kids? Were they academically inclined in the first place? I know a lady who is DYNAMITE with people, but couldn't do math to save her life so she does reception and party-organizing, which people adore her for. Saying these women are under-achieving may be part of THE EXACT problem with our society: If you don't work no one values you. I'm sure it's easy to find material about how in many cases work is an easier time than parenting/homemaking.
Maybe these men want to be the breadwinner and sometimes it isn't the fulfillment they were hoping for, so they complain. Maybe when they started working it was pos
How about we make higher quality roads instead of paying unions to do a shit job and then tear the roads up again every few years? Seriously, Chicago just had a few major highways repaved a few years ago. Already falling apart...
I don't understand why this doesn't come up more often when we talk about transportation taxes. Build ROADS that withstand stresses better. Sure, it puts a few guys with shovels out of work, but that's progress... let's get out of the stone age with roads.
oral/pharyngeal cancer doesn't get much attention, it's actually nice to see a prominent study on it. the HPV vaccine (i think it's a scare tactic by big pharma, given the numbers) is BIIIIIIIIIIIIG money for them if they can convince parents it's necessary. Talked to a prominent fellow in the field about it... big money for something if you can pump up the scare factor is what he told me too.
but yeah, nice to see some more hard numbers showing that this cancer is not a very big risk
Yep, this. I've learned not to engage in discussions at holidays with family anymore. The only person who believes me is my ex-Navy Seal uncle. He's a really smart guy, a little off, but we both read around the news and just sit there looking around while everyone else says we're crazy. It's not fun.
I totally agreed with you up until that last sentence. I sure hope that last sentence was a joke, because I laughed so hard that the guy in the office next to me came in to see what was happening.
Dangerous loose cannons? Wow... just... I mean, look at the logical fallacy! Look at the generalization! Look at the... look at the.... ahahahahahaaaa!
Ahem. sorry for shouting. Why is this modded informative? Seriously, you people don't realize that those numbers are bullshit, right? Just like album sales? I've seen this number trotted out recently elsewhere, but don't we realize that it comes from the total amount SHIPPED TO RETAILERS, not the number of people who actually bought it?
Yeah or, you know, you could look at Star Citizen.... 100K unique users and 7 million total in funding (not sure why they say it's 2 in the summary, that's completely wrong for the overall total). 100K clocks in at a need for $6 of profit per copy to equal your 3% on 20 million. Even if we account for cost variances and other things, Star Citizen is going to make a metric fuckton of money for its creators before the game ever even gets out the door.
Overr here, from a financial perspective, kids are INSANELY expensive. The media (toys, tv, movies, clothing, etc) and our government (school costs, taxes, regulations, esp college costs) have leveraged people's natural desire to have children against those people. Wanna have kids? You're going to be broke unless you make a very large salary. I keep being told how cheap kids are by some people, but seeing the financial reality it goes like this:
"My husband has a fine, comfortable job making 75K a year! We have two cars and a house, let's have a kid!" Me: (more nicely than this) As your financial advisor, I advise you to make double what you are now and then consider it. Them: Well it's our decision Me: Ok.
Them 12-18 months later: Barely able to afford house repairs, have to trade down to one car, and the "free" parent has to greatly consider getting a job because these people finally realize that schooling and giving kids opportunities costs a HUGE amount of money. Me: Can't say I told them so, but I watch their happy, healthy lives go to shit as they are ground down under the weight of their new responsibility.
I know this sounds horrible and terrible and all sorts of bad things, but this has been the de facto standard in everyone around me who I've seen have kids. Thing is? THEY KEEP HAVING THEM! Suddenly they have 3 or 4 kids, no saving for retirement or college, and are locked into "family life". For a while this is nice... until the kids hit school age and the bills start piling up.
From what I've seen, I recommend that people NEED to be making at least 50K PER PERSON in a family. If you're making 100K you're pretty much ok with two people. 150K? Ok, you can have a kid and give them what they need to get by in the world. Want more? You better work your buns off or you're looking at a grim future.
This is just my opinion, but sadly i've found it true more times than I'd like. I'd like to think everyone can have kids, but the financial reality these days is that you'd have to be crazy to do so without a lot of backup cash or a cushy job.

When you read this, you know who you are. You were wrong, it's delicious and POPULAR. There was brined turkey all over the place FOR SALE at trader joe's last week. AND NOW THEY'RE GONE BECAUSE PEOPLE BOUGHT THEM! I rest my case, brined turkey is both legitimate and legitimately delicious. Don't like it? I'll just have your portion, thank you.
For all those of you who are not in the know on this one, some geeks are very full of themselves and think they know a lot more than they do. It leads to their being Elitist Hipster Assholes, and while I'm sure you know this it seems only right to make it a sort of PSA. Give thanks that these people aren't YOUR friends. I do.
My problem with DVD rental now is the amount of choice. Back in Chicago there was this AWESOME place called specialty video. Loved it. Problem was, they had so many good and rare movies that I would walk out without renting because I couldn't decide. Hundreds of movies, and what the internet does now is narrow down the frustration of making a choice. It gives us a handful of movie ideas and we can pick one if we want.
Also, there are definitely DVDs that we cannot get online, lots of them. I say market to the cinephiles, the people looking for the rare gems. Get online.
I really think that dvd rental has a place still. I like going someplace like that, but the interface could use some updating IMO
I talked with an investment firm holding a large chunk of Nintendo stock. It was pointed out to me that Nintendo is holding a HUGE amount of cash right now, similar to Apple's strategy. Basically, Nintendo isn't going anywhere, most likely, as they have the resources to weather just about any storm from the looks of it. Doesn't mean they wouldn't make the move out of hardware, but rest assured Nintendo isn't going anywhere, at least for a while.
try using "display fusion" My coworker does, it allows hotkeys to orient the windows between monitors around via keyboard instead of dragging.

Potatoes? That isn't anything compared to the THIRTY thousand pounds of mashed bananas!
Anybody? Aaaaaanybody?
Well, it looks like the sex cured *that* cancer... Brilliant!
is it the acid? the scorching of the inside of one's mouth? the caffeine?
I feel like they should have added a "tea" group in there too or something.
Also, good god, 4 CUPS OF COFFEE A DAY FOR 26 YEARS!? sweet jesus, that doesn't seem healthy.
I'm curious what other health effects there were vs a control group. I think THAT would have gotten them a ton more mileage out of the data (IMO)

Maybe he's as sick of all the BS as we are and was in a position to try and do something.
Thinking this kid was some sort of dunce is a nice ego boost, but he's probably quite sharp if he made it up The Hill.
I don't know... every time I go into a restaurant and see the prices on the menu I choke, so the food doesn't go down nearly as well as it ought to.
