The lobbying system whereby you can support your interests by lobbying our government, which has now been turned into a system by which large corporations now run our government, well now large corporations can lobby the patent system and control that now, good news guys you can have your say! Long live freedom in America! Sorry if I seem a little skeptical, but if anyone can add to this without their background being checked, then I don't think its very good, at the very least a corporation could deliberately spam the patent office so they couldn't effectively review a patent.
I live in the UK, and when I walk into a mobile phone shop, I get shown a selection of phones, all of which work on every tarriff (orange, o2, virgin etc.) and I look, and a nice helper comes up and explains all the features, and after a lonhg explanation I choose a phone I would like. After this, we sit down and I say how much I will use the phone, and the sales assistant will say, well, you could go for pay and go, and that means the phone will cost you £150 (average high end example) and that I can top up any time I want and the amount I top up will give me so many minutes. He will also say you can get this phone on contract, and will present me with several 1 or 2 year contracts for this phone ranging from £15-£50, and of course minutes, and off-peak minutes and data transfer provided will vary. However, what will not happen is when they ask me if I want a contract, they will never charge me for that phone, that's how it works, the phones don't cost them much to produce, and they are gaurenteed your income for 1-2 years so they don't charge for the phone, in absolute extreme cases they will charge £50 for a top end phone on a short contract. Does that really not happen in America? Or does it work the same way for everyone but Apple in America? I mean $600 on a phone where you are probably paying out $75 a month for 2 years anyway?!
It wont, the main reason is that the reply rate of these stories has been fluxuating between 600 and 250 (after about 1 week after the story) and there is no trend suggesting the number of replies is dropping. So untill you take matters into your own hands and demonstrate your indifference by not viewing or replying to these stories they will continue to post the stories. If you want to things to change you need to take steos to change them.
After the Ipod came out there was a period (and to an extent this continue) where Ipods just got nicked left right and center because of Apple's stupid idea to give you white earphones, clearly marking you out as a target to get mugged. Now with the iphone, not only have you go the earphones, but you watch videos, so you are holding out a $500 phone at roughly arms length, in public. Am I not the only person who sees this as an incredible easy target for theives? And of course, when I'm at home I just use my computer, so I question the sensibility of actually using these features while "Roaming" (Personally I think that's a silly term anyway, I would not describe anything I ever do as "Roaming")
If you announce a product ~3 months before you ship (exactly the opposite of what they usually do) and then haven't made enough to keep the shelves full you are a fool.
And secondly, how the hell have you got modded up, its so typical you get modpoints for posting some crap based on no facts "Well you'll see in the future when everything goes how steve jobs wants it to go..." there's nothing insightful or interesting about that, "You'll just see when steve jobs elopes with steve ballmer next thursday" yes, I can make useless predictions about the future that we don't know is going to happen, i don't usually do it cos it has no value, because everyone knows your statement already and they know there is a posibility, but by voicing it again you aren't adding anythin. Any normal well thought out comment would have been "Well I guess the european manufacturers will make their mind up when they see the iphone entry into the US market". Think things through please.
Apple is being deliberately obtuse, their GUI doesn't fit, lots of interface works differently, and it renders some pages wrong. Stop building programs that are meant to train people into using your operating system- it's a stupid idea cos you just end up with a program that seems not to work properly. Whereas maybe if they went and built a really good program, and program that looks good and acts as you think it should, they may actually sell you the idea to change to their operating system as you give them confidence in Apple's ability to code good programs.
With this deliberate attempt to convert people to the church of Steve there's no way Safari will be a good contender, that's not what its built to be.
As a separate point, 1million downloads I'd bet quite a large chunk is the firefox users who want to just check it out (don't want to use it). They say it could take a chunk out of IE, no it wont because the people who were going to change did, they went to firefox cos its better. Safari isn't better, and its not hte only alternative, so IE cant lose the market share that doesn't use third party browsers, and wont loose the market share that doees, cos if they were going to move, they'd have gone to ff.
I've seen so many people say "So what? Other countries are still developing that stuff"
okay lets look at an example
The Romans- Clear Scientific superiority including war weaponry. What did they do? Conquer the whole known world and taxed it to afford their lifestyle.
and there are plenty of examples, but I tell you what there aren't examples of, countries which have made technological advances just giving them away to other countires. Considering how hated America is by the whole of the world, don't you think its very important for America to remain the strongest nation, because lathough in the past it could have faded into insignificance and no one would have cared, it would just be another economy, but now there are people just waiting for America to fall. Honestly you can't go round the world enforcing your will on other countires and then expect when you are weak for other people to cut you a break. When America falls behind it will become a nation which is pushed around and forced to act in certain ways just like it has done to others in the past, and if America wants to stay free, it can't let that happen.
Why is it always the easy freedoms that get fought for, and yet the important long term freedoms are left to rot.
How do they not get this yet, you burn stuff you produce CO2. I don't care what you burn, CO2 is given off. Practically every country exept for America accepts global warming as a problem, CO2 emissions will not get better when you keep burning stuff for energy, How are these people not getting this! For god's sake, these are scientists, they've seen the evidence and know that CO2 is a problem so stop trying to find new inventive ways to produce it.
Personally, the main thing that pissed me off, was when America started burning crops (biofeul i think), the same crops that would feed mexicans, and as a result the price of the main food source there rose to huge amounts, now people starve, america wants to keep burning stuff instead of using hydro-electric, wave power, or tidal- all of which are viable. That is WRONG!/Rant over
Every FBI agent who asked for/took information not legally allowed should be sacked immediately, they either don't know the law they are enforcing or are deliberately breaking it themselves. No excuses, they should be sacked. With ten thousand offences (1000, but only 10% sample was taken) The management should be removed and replace. Maybe this would give a proper signal of what the people expect of their law enforcement and show to the people that criminal activity isn't tolerated anywhere.
They either do this, or the populace should not feel under any compulsion to comply with any laws at all, or pay taxes, this is because the government has a responsibility as well as the individual, if the government has shirked its responsibiity no citizen can be expected in return to have any responsibility to the government.
I know this seems extreme but in the long run it would be the right move giving a good precedent and restoring a large amount of faith in the system.
As I remember it, surely mens rea can be over ruled by not taking necessary steps to find out if they are breaching law, or are deliberately trying to avoid knowing in order to avoid mens rea, in this case not taking necessary steps to find out if other people can access and copy those matierials. I'm probably wrong though.
Or Does that translate as "We're going to review privacy policy" which is bush talk for "We're going to remove any of your rights to privacy under the name of virginia tech and anyone who complaigns is helping the murderers. Just a thought.
I know I'm being very pessimistic, but it's necessary with this goverment, they removed my rights to be anything else.
How is NOT dropping the price of a product news. I mean, if it were, we're not doing it now we're doing it on this date instead then maybe, but honestly this is just another story adding to the FUD around xbox pricing.
Firstly, in a real sense, no data on the average person's computer is secure enough NOT to be accessed by someone else, so someone else could have shared it. Secondly, its normal text, anyone half competent can change a file unrelated to you to add the information, for any reason including you have a common name, they know you and don't like you, you are a passing aquitance and they wanted to change the information to something. Anything.
Quote: "Chances are Apple has included this information to comply with their licensing terms for selling DRM free music." RTFA it was there before the beginnning, irrelevant of DRM.
Okay before anyone flames me for this, just as a precursor, I would just like to say I've read the other comments and as far as DRM, or apple trying to trick people or anything like that I agree is just stupid.
However, I do have the slightest concern that if apple is not using encryption for people's personal files on this sort of thing, I am a little worried where else they may not be encrypting this data, I mean if all this information is storedon itunes user infromation databases, I hope it is full encrypted, but it seems a little less likely now.
The second it gets hacked (probably very soon) you can claim in court that someone else could easily have faked your name. Even otherwise you just call a technical expert to testify that someone could easily write code to re-write the information to be fake. (IANAL)
Btw> I'm not making a startement on whether it is write or wrong, I'm simply questioning whether it is enforceable to sue someone for copyright infringement with this as evidence.
I don't, the point I was making is that by far the majority of home users do, and while you can contend quite easily that several hundred thousand people are stupid, but they'll still click through it, and they will get pissed off as it. When It comes to me, generaly I don't skip through but on occassion I might, and I'm guarenteed to find its done some crap to a completely unrelatd program. Any legislation encouraging this crap from companeis should be stopped.
Yes, I read the story, but if you are saying that in reply to a comment three/four below the level of a direct responce, the likely hood is the conversation has progressed. I hate to be the one to tell you this, but in true slashdot fashion, you've totally misunderstood what conversation is about.
It indexes your files, firstly, to do correctly, and without slowinng you r computer alot that takes a long time, secondly while you are using your computer you are modifying files, when you modify them, they need re-indexing.
If really necessary ctrl+alt+del, find the process, shut it down, its no vital, but that's not a permanent solution.
I'm not gonna assume thatm if I end up with google search bar (why would i want this with a search bar box in my FF anyway?) while installing completely unrelated software, that google is going to do the honourable thing and not suspend it by default.
As a second thought, have you considered the other programs that may leap on the ability to disable it? It wouldn't be exclusive to google.
I do run linux as a secondary boot (ubuntu) but unfortunately, there are certain things I need windows for, like when other people want to use my computer, some of the people I know are technophobes, and would never make the switch if not because of the differences, because of being scared of the change. Having said that, I do kinda like windows for its sleek interface (on face value) and who doesn't want to play solitare for hours;).
