Thing is, my computer does fine for all I use it for, including a bit of Skyrim. I just dropped 8gigs into it as an upgrade and am pondering getting a 3ghz+ four core for about 90$. That will push out my purchase of a new system at least a few more years. I own a laptop and an iPhone as well. The iPhone doesn't replace a laptop, and the laptop doesn't replace a desktop. Oh, in the same time that I've had that destop I have purchased 5 iPhones, yes... FIVE iPhones. I don't have to upgrade my desktop every two years, it doesn't get accidentally dropped in the ocean, crushed or flung across the room. Perhaps sales figures are just that, eh?

Additionally it will have 6 or so times the graphics power and memory to play games my current system already handles well enough. I might have purchased earlier, but I didn't feel I would have been getting that much more for my investment then I already had. The new system will likely last another 7 or so years. Measuring the delta for the subject taught would be a better way of determining a teacher's contribution to a child's education. Proper compensation should be given to teacher's who perform better as an incentive. Art isn't just about making pretty pictures. There is history to it, there is math involved and there are elements that can be tested. True... we can't have an almost blank page that says, "use your #2 pencil to sketch blah blah blah." Still, there are things the students should have learned. Establishing a requirement of what has to be taught outside of the aesthetic shouldn't be that much of a challenge.

One thing you pointed out I found interesting is the number of students in a classroom. As things stand there is currently one "education employee" per 11.6 students. Yet classrooms have 25 - 30+ children. When I was in public school there was only one teacher in the room with us. I realize we need a school nurse, principal, a handful of counselors and attendance staff. Grounds keeps, cafeteria staff and security too! Still, how do we approach this ratio of students to "education employee"? I think it is a case of those who can't, teach. Those who can't teach become school administrators. Often administrators paid more then those in the trenches actually teaching our kids. Due to tenure and unions, in a public server context, we can't clean house at the top.

One might say that these tests themselves create more overhead, but really? How many people does it take to make a standardized test even at the state level? What, Is the scantron so hard to operate that it takes an army to do so? It's obvious that there is excessive administrative overhead, and that takes money not just from our actual educators; the education of our children suffers due to this entitlement. This is why the private sector can due this job more efficiently, and why with each strike the public education system is killing itself. It is a shame as I prefer a school not be a engine for religious indoctrination.

No desire to go multiplayer and my inability to play it up at the ranch prevented my initial purchase. Sad too... there isn't much to do in places where your best option for internet is satellite. Seems like the area, while sparsely populated, should be a great market for game studios. Downloading a multi gigabyte torrent is unthinkable over satellite. Thing is... it would require game makers take the time to publish DVDs that don't have a hundred outstanding bug fixes that would require a multi gigabyte download. So, no games for you rural world! Yes, I'm quite aware that would be angelic of Apple to do so, and it is way over the top to ask them to do so. Does anyone know if they made information availible to the community to facilitate non-Apple OSS developers attempting to write nessisary drivers for this new device? Don't get me wrong fan boys... Apple does make good gear, and it isn't Apple's fault it doesn't run Linux all that well on this particular device. However despite having a good operating system for a workstation I'm just not a big fan of OSX at home. I use Linux primarily at work and I am quite happy with it. Given the choice between Windows and OSX at work it will be OSX every time. However, I DO have a better choice in workstation OS that more closely mirrors our production servers on which to develop software.

I also don't care much for Apple as a company. I find Microsoft more trustworthy, and that really does say quite a bit.

It would be nice if Apple contributed to Linux. I know that is asking a lot of them as they throughly enjoy tieing two products together by virtue of license and copyright law. It is something they are unfortunately unlikely to change and as a result I try to avoid purchasing their hardware. Much like I will try to avoid any "secure boot" BIOS gear in the future.
