You have it the other way around. Debian is ahead of ubuntu. You are probably referring to debian-stable, which is mainly for servers. I have been using debian-testing for about 4 years now. I was at a redhat convention once and I asked some of the engineers what they thought of centos and I nearly got thrown out of the place... Centos is very sore with them. So I would stay away from it. Redhat does many great things for the linux community. We need to support them atleast for our enterprise stuff. Or just use debian...
