    Now, imagine, in the future they might be able to move a whole magazine to - say - a mobile computer pad instead of dead trees ... isn't that mind-bogling? Wonder if the technology will ever exist ...

    There's two guys taking on the (nowadays) unheard of task of writing an Assembly OS, and all people go on about is that you can run Quake on it? WTF ... The last Assembly-OS I used (well, to a big part anyway) was my trusty ol' Amiga ... and it ran circles around many systems that came later with more CPU power ...

    If the artificially created DNA evidence was based on just the contents of a profile database, and the person incriminated is apprehended, wouldn't a DNA comparison of the fabricated and the real sample show major discrepancies? At least at that point a person should be able to prove that the DNA is not from him/her ... (of course, DNA being so highly regarded as infallible, it's a classic "guilty until proven innocent") ...

    Of course this would not work for DNA created on the basis of existing DNA ...

    Well, of course it's a duplication of functionality - after all, it's a f@cking phone already. Apple saves its followers a big amount of time, saving them from downloading an app that would allow them to do phone call ...

    Anyway, I guess it just fits together - after all, I reckon they get a decent cut from AT&T's income of phone minutes, so if people were to move to VoIP/Skype, they'd call less, ergo less income ...

    Sorry, but this dictatorship is what will keep me from getting an iPhone, even if it may be a well designed piece of soft- and hardware ... will be picking up a G1 some time soon I guess ...

    What do you mean, "would surely invent it"? They are inventing it, at least as far as numbers and facts are concerned ... in Germany, "Zensursula" von der Leyen has come up with statistics about the amount of commercial Childporn distributed via Internet, none of which she to date has been able to actually back with any facts. Additionally, the "large number of countries" without legislation against child porn supposedly was the reason filtering (useless, as it's based on faking DNS results) is based on a year-old study, which on top of the age is also containing information that is plain wrong (e.g., if a country does not have specific laws against child porns, it is counted, even if it has outlawed all porn!). Upon examination of said list, it was found that out of almost 100 countries listed, only like 9 indeed didn't have laws against child porn. Of those, nearly all are well down on the technological scale, making distribution of child porn d@mn near impossible from there ...

    Of course, what politician can resist finally getting his wet dreams of actively taking charge of all of the country's citizens access to free information fulfilled?

    Politics suck.

    Not all companies back then developed directly on the C64 either.

    I can't speak for all folks, but what I did on the 64, as well as what many of my friends did, was exclusively done on the C64 ... mostly due to the fact that the C64 was what we had, nothing else (well, maybe except for a Sharp programmable calculator, etc.) And we didn't use any high-level crap, but coded in Assembly ... optimizing was done using a biological optimizer (i.e., a BRAIN, something rarely used by programmers today ...)

    As for denyhosts, yes, you can slow them down, as it can share blocked hosts among all users ... I typically get about 5-10x as many from the denyhosts server than I block new remote hosts ...

    It's simple, the backups are compressed -- they simply remove all those useless zeroes from the binary data.

    ... and once the useless zeroes are out, a RLE of the remaining data takes care of the rest ... then, once a day, some monkey comes in and does a backup on an old 1541 ... the disk is then xeroxed and the paper copy safely stored in between the stocks and derivatives of AIG, ensuring that no-one will ever find it in between that worthless pile of paper ...

    Btw, Stuttgart canceled a game meeting either last or coming weekend, based on the fact that they would have stuff like Counterstrike being oh so violent ...

    Fact is, there is no known case of any major fight with people injured at any game meeting.

    Football (soccer) matches on the other hand ... still they don't dare to ban those ...

    Every time something horrible like this happens (and 15 people, many of which children/teens, losing their lives is indeed horrible), you can expect over-zealous politicians, police or others to pop up all over the place, calling for banning of either Internet, Games, etc ...

    And why? Easy!

    First of all, they want to be seen as somebody who is "actively" doing something ... (with most people not understanding that the only thing being done is talking, bot taking care of the problem). With several elections due this year in Germany, this way of producing themselves is even more probable ...

    Then, calling for ban of $random will always be easier than calling for actually doing something to fix the actual cause ... which, in this (and probably most/all cases) is taking care of a psychologically sick kid decently, and/or kicking the parents for not taking the time to care for their child(ren) ... sure, it's easier to let the TV and computer take care of them instead of spending time yourself ...

    We started our business in March 96 ... went online 3/6/96 ... back then, a 128k line was enough to supply a total of three POPs with internet ... private users were limited to use during off-hours (5PM through 8AM), though IIRC we didn't have hourly charges (apart from the dial-in cost for the people for their modem or ISDN connection)

    Ah, what fond memories - Web browsing without any M$ IE in sight ;)

    Of course it's nothing new that teachers won't re-write their teaching docs every year. After all, unless topics change, there is no need to re-do stuff you already prepared. But being so lazy that you don't even want to make up new quizzes every other year, or at least alter them somewhat so that straight copying isn't possible - puleassssse ... even if it legal (which, even in the US, I seriously doubt), once word is out, EVERYBODY will know she's too lazy, keep duplicates (or write the stuff on their computer), and make SURE they are available on the Internet for every new pupil to get for generations to come ...

    (Of course, she could use the DMCA takedown provision to get rid of it, but ...)
