"Here are Five Things You Aren't Allowed to Discuss About Linux. With considerable chutzpa, an insightful Rob Enderle takes on what he considers five dogmas in the OSS community and explains why they're wrong.

... works for Microsoft... ... he believes that Linux is a "free-software scam,"... ... he has compared some Linux advocates to terrorists... ... Enderle is most infamous for predicting the death of the Macintosh more often than any other industry observer,...
"...and understand how this game works a lot more easily than they would be able with a game like Ultima."
You should check how old Richard Garriott was when he wrote Ultima.
Another thing you kind of missed. If no one is interested in the game. No one is going to view the source. That point is pretty much universal with open source anything.
This looks like a great app to use for generating more detailed height maps for flight sims.
You could zoom in on your height map to the location your aitcraft if flying towards use this tool to create a more detailed height map out of that smaller height map image and then wack that new mesh into your game as you get closer to the ground.
Motorola for example has completely missed the point with their Motorola A1200 Ming phone. I bought one because I thought I would be able to change the code (It said it uses the Linux kernel so it didn't seem unreasonable).
Yes you can download the code but you can not use it at all. They've locked down the phone so tight that you can't even boot up the phone without THEIR kernel.
This number one reason we need the GPL 3 License on the Linux kernel so I can upgrade / change my damn phone!
"You see pornography is not reality. It is fantasy. But kids have a difficult time distinguishing between the two."
I stopped reading there because that is basically their actual point and I think you will find that it is the other way around in regards to the reality distortion...
You show someone hard global warming evidence.. they switch off into their fantasy world.
You show someone fossil records dating back millions of years.. they switch off into their fantasy world.
I find that my niece knows exactly the difference between fantasy (as in not real) and reality (as in real) and she is only 4 years old. If my 4 year old niece knows the difference then I am sure a 14, 15, 16 whatever knows the difference. Why does everyone assume that their children are stupid? If I was these parents kids I would be insulted.
I remember when I was a kid and weird stuff was happening to me. I didn't want to talk to my parents about it.. its embarrassing and today parents do not want to listen anyway (I'm reminded of Stan's mum from South Park). I think its important for kids to be able to find somewhere to make sense about it all. That doesn't mean in porn but if this group had it their way then anything even slightly sexually related would be filtered even if it was about sexual health.
These people's ways of dealing with the important subject of sexual health it is through ignorance and its the wrong method. It leads to people thinking they won't get pregnant if they don't wear a condom or catch a disease.
If I had a child (which I hope to have some day) then I would want them to be educated about such things. Not to encourage that behavior but to avoid the worst possibility's if something were to happen.
Under this test, the true nature of the advance being claimed in a patent application must be determined, and if this advance lies solely in the field of software, or another non-technical field such as methods of doing business, the patent will not be granted.
"The Government remains committed to its policy that no patents should exist for inventions which make advances lying solely in the field of software."
That seems pretty clear to me. Why is everyone moaning about this being vague?
"Although certain jurisdictions, such as the US, allow more liberal patenting of software-based inventions, these patents cannot be enforced in the UK."
If anyone was thinking about starting a GNU/GPL project on something patented then find someone British to be your front man. Open Source patents problem solved.... for now.
It looks like Spark entered this deal on trust from their ex-employers and got royally screwed on the first game they produced and are trying to get out of the deal while not ending up bankrupt because of the mess EA has put them in.
Just goes to show that you got to make sure that contacts are bullet proof by a lawyer (wow I guess they are useful after all) before signing anything.
I don't blame spark at all because if I was reading that agreement I would also just think it was "ok" and sign it. I guess it also shows that even though your an ex-EA employee they can still screw you over.
As a game programming student even if EA offered me a job I wouldn't take it based on everything I have heard and read these last two years.
You must live in a European country. I'm currently living in Thailand (I'm from the UK) and the kids here are sweet, loving and are always back in time for dinner. If I ever have kids with my girlfriend later on in our lives it will be in Asia as kids here know not to screw with your parents unless you want to be on the street.
But the most important thing.
When I'm old I know they won't stick me in a home. The same can't be said about the UK.
"1) ESR has a package conflict. In an attempt to fix that he removed a library that was critical to the functioning of the package system, and then he was stuck, unable to restore his system."
"4) ESR couldn't fix his system."
In other words, Operating systems fault. Not good for a Linux desktop, because a desktop is suppose to be easy and let you get on with your work / life.
"AT&T is willing to concede that software isn't patentable, if the Court will conclude that the things that software does - the methods and procedures and instructions that a processor carries out once software is installed - are patentable."
Is not things such as "methods and procedures and instructions that a processor carries out" software?
From my perspective they are saying:
"AT&T is willing to concede that software isn't patentable, if the Court will conclude that software is patentable"
This guy has risked being put into prison for years ruining his life for something he believed to be wrong. How many other people would have just moved on instead of stepping up to report this?
I think thats the action that should be celebrated even though you are quite correct that this guy is not exactly an angel but then how many of us are?
If they are problems which are not being fixed then why not fork the PHP code base and apply your security fixes, no ones stopping them and this is the point of open source software.
If something isn't being done then you have to do it yourself.
The police shot a Brazilian in the head multiple times for running to catch a train.
The policemen responsible didn't even get suspended. Shoot first, questions later is defiantly being encouraged.
This is great news as I plan to live in Thailand instead of the UK (were I am from). I am hoping that I won't have to setup my own business to be able to work in the Games Industry there since I'm still in University.
I'm working in Thailand (which is below china) right now as a web developer and am going back to my Games Programming course in England this year. I really hope more Game development companies come here as its a great place to work and live.

I'd hardly call him "insightful"

The company responded with a statement announcing that the reason was to make sure they were not doing or thinking evil.

Your sister sounds almost a mirror image of my sister.
They don't think of others and that is the problem.

I believe the objective is to automate gold collecting so you can then sell it at various gold auction sites for real money.
Why pay for an Asian and a computer when you can just use the computer.
