A great many people would argue about LP's being "obsolete". They certainly are less convenient, and easier to damage, but many believe they offer superior reproduction of music.

Of course, a $100 cd player will sound better than a $100 stereo with turntable, but if you don't mind parting with your kid's inheritance (to hell with the kids), LP's really do sound better.

  5. Re:What a bunch of crap on Is the Net The Cause of California's Power Problems? · · Score: 2

The problem is not a lack of power. The problem is the way that the politicians deregulated the electric industry in California. The problem is that one of the main suppliers in California yesterday defaulted on paying for approximately $500 million in electricity they purchased, even though they over $1 billion in their coffers. The problem is that they have now been downgraded to junk bond status because of their default.

The problem was caused the way the deregulation was structured by the politicians. They planned to cap the pricing to consumers, while letting the wholesale price fluctuate. The "thinking" at the time was that the wholesale price would decrease under deregulation, thus their profits would go up.

No one envisioned that the whole price would increase (due to natural gas price increases) to a point where they were selling at less than the cost of producing.

Sorry, but technology isn't the answer this time. Oh, and yes, the pie is limited. Conservation is not THE answer, but it is a PART of the answer.

Dude, I'd forget Me for awhile! I just installed it (trying to be proactive: when windows crashed large I'd have to: format the drive, install dos from floppy, 3.11 from floppy, cdrom driver from floppy, then 95 upgrade, then my apps. I figured I'd get the full version of Me, since 98 is supposed to go away) and I've had ALOT of problems. My Colorado Backup II is not supported, Partition Magic is not supported, I have seen countless active desktop errors, and the screensaver often locks everything tighter than a drum. The local comp. store told me they're recommending people wait for 6 months until MS gets the inevitable service packs out.

I ended up formatting the drive and installing 98. Of course, I only boot this piece of shit up when I want to use Pagemaker. Then I take a shower and reboot to Debian.

It's not just for home controllers. I attended a meeting last November that discussed this project. Their intended customers now are businesses, such as supermarkets, fast food franchises, and the like, to give them information about devices such as walk-in coolers, refrigerated display cabinets, and other environmentally controlled areas.

The system has various sensors located throughout the monitored areas, with alarm conditions (limits) that trigger the folks monitoring the systems. These monitors can be located anywhere; the place I was at was located in Atlanta. When the alarm is triggered, the monitor either calls the local manager of the store to inform him of the problem, or can actually dispatch the repairman to the location.

It's sorta like the commercial for the refridgerator, where the guy comes to the door saying the Big Fred sent him to fix the fridge, but the woman says it's not broken. He says, not yet, with a knowing smile.

The idea can also to used with a database to monitor things like compressor duty cycle and predict failure.

I thought the name was kind of ominous, but only one other person at the meeting (suits, I was the lone real person) had heard of it.

The next one would then be on 2/2/20000 wouldn't it? Wow, aren't we lucky! We get 36 or so Happy Even Days this year (and for a while too), but future generations living in 8888 will have to wait 10,000 years for the next one.
