Do I resent the fact I've been out of work? Yes. Do I resent his comment about it? No. My comment was commiseration of a sort regarding the troubles one is likely to experience with long-term unemployment.
I'll jump on the agreement bandwagon as well. The thumbwheel is one of the coolest ways to easily adjust icon size in a window. IMD also had drag and drop executed very well. It's a very useful environment, though it sometimes lacks the flash of some of the newer WMs. It is very useful, though...
I stand by what I said. The original poster mentioned that he'd been out of work for a year. I resemble that remark, as I've been out of work for 11 months. Perhaps you should spend a few more skill points on reading comprehension.
how do you know for sure, though? Maybe she's got you faked too. hell, this poor guy's married to her, so she probably doesn't even make the effort to make it real for him. but for you, maybe she still doesn't want to crush your ego, especially if your lust is new. seeing as how you're on slashdot, and posting as an AC, the odds are that this is your first time for sex as well. she probably tells you you've got a big dick, too. just remember, you can't trust a woman who fakes an orgasm. who knows what she's going to lie about...
Funny, I too have been attracted to simpler and simpler systems, particularly WRT combat. I'm probably getting old, but I'm generally more interested in something that resolves quickly, but still has room for surprises and heroic play. I've been tinkering with various ideas, but nothing amazing has really shown up. The most interesting thing I've done so far was to use base to-hit and AC as attack and defense scores, and use them with an opposed die roll. The difference in total scores (die +base attack or defense) determined what kind of wound was inflicted. Not hit points (didn't keep track of them), it was more like 'grazing blow' versus 'you cleave him nearly in two'. It seems to work ok, but needs a little refinement. I dunno. I think in a tabletop wargame the bookkeeping aspects of some "RPG" systems (like d20) are a boon - for a real roleplaying game with heroic/fantastic combats, etc. I think they get in the way. just my lame $0.02 USD.

I thought Titus was a pretty decent adaptation. I don't think it was an attempt to re-cast the Bard's story in more modern period, a'la Luhrman's romeo and juliet. The Roman and Goth soldiers were wearing brigandine plate and using short swords, after all. There were props that did have a fascist feel, I agree, but I suspect they were more to give the flavor of Saturninus' rule, rather than set an era. *shrugs* Turtledove does rule, though...
You must be talking about AD&D rules, since D&D maxes out at level 36. I think this is true even for the newer d20 version 3 or 3.5 - seems like the 'basic' rules go to level 20, and there are 'epic' rules to go to 36 or something. I don't think anyone's really played a character who started at level 1 and lived longer than level 9 anyway:)
i'd have to agree that if you aren't interested in doing the editing on a computer (why you'd want to do it with dubbing decks or (heaven forbid) the camera itself, i can't imagine), you needn't bother with a digital format like mini-dv or digital 8. You can get a nice analog Hi8 camcorder for fairly cheap. I also agree that you should get the highest optical zoom you can find. I bought an older sharp mini-dv that doesn't have pass-through, but it does have 26x optical zoom, which is pretty nice if you're doing touristy things. digital zoom is lame, and shouldn't even enter into the equation. the CCDs on video cameras don't have anywhere near the resolution of a still camera, so any sort of digital 'magnification' that you're going to get will be pixellated. I haven't found a real use for the IR or low light capabilities of cameras, but perhaps there are some. Mine does light amplification, but unless you're trying to shoot a black and white Blair Witch lookalike, i don't know how useful such a thing would be.
i burned my mod points earlier, otherwise i would've modded up your questions - they seem like good ones to me, FWIW. attacking the whole 'free software just because' is a crapshoot - i've been modded troll for it, but my last post about tools and work and being productive was modded up to +4... who woulda thunk?
oh geez... it's a damned tool, not your fucking life. My 'principles' when it comes to tools can be summed up as "I want tools that perform as advertised." Linux as a desktop operating system is a fun thing to mess around with, but when you decide to settle down and do some work with the damned thing, that sort of nonsense gets in the way. My ex-employer was a nearly 100% MS shop. In fact they're my ex employer because they tanked their UNIX servers (which I ran with over 400 days of uptime, with 24/7 workload) for NT/2000. I could never get a desktop (linux or FreeBSD) that I could run 100% of the time and not have to dual-boot back to Windows for something. When I started bringing my Powerbook to work, I didn't need to use Windows any more. I could connect to the POS Exchange server, I could ssh to my UNIX boxes, I could open every stinking MS Word and Excel document on the network, etc. I gave my PC workstation back to the desktop support guys, and was happy with my dual-monitor setup with my Powerbook. Now, perhaps in a different environment, you could perform the same feats using Linux or FreeBSD. Believe me, over the course of 5 years, I tried pretty damned hard to keep from working in that unstable, virus-susceptible, insecure Windows environment.
Your F/OSS ideology can suck an egg. Those arguments aren't about which OS empowers the user more (the single user model, as set forth by CP/M and carried on through every MS product, versus the multi-user model as set forth by UNIX and UNIX-like OSes), or which one is better for some tasks but not so great for others. It's just a bunch of idealogical whining about open-source vs. closed-source. To top it off, the only license that gives true freedom to do whatever the fuck you want with the software (the BSD license, before someone screams that POS GPL) isn't even given a nod when compared to that fascist GPL shit. It's all well and good when it's an intellectual exercise, but when it comes to getting work done, I've found those arguments suddenly lose a lot of relevance. Hell, if Windows didn't have so many problems, I would've used *that* at work, since I wanted to do a good job for my employer, even considering the lack of resources that they were willing to provide (like a decent UNIX workstation). Fortunately, since I was running a real desktop UNIX-like OS, which ran software that was compatible with the crap that my "enterprise" *cough cough* ran, I didn't have to. So roll that into a fatty and smoke dat shit...
I had good luck with mine, too (g4/400). I think the guy I sold mine to is still beating the crap out of it, happy as can be. damn, shouldn't have sold it. ah, well...
damn, I had the first Titanium Powerbook - g4/400. it gave me two years of service before I sold it like a dumb fuck, and every day that poor thing was schlepped to work and back home. It was my work computer and my home computer, so I'd use it at work 9 hours a day, come home, and use it 3 or 4 more hours. I took it on holiday, took it to friends' houses, etc. and in two years, no problems. I've heard people bitch about the paint flaking, and the power supply dying, and the lcd, and blah blah blah. I never did have any problems with mine. I had no idea so many other people were having problems with theirs. I was thinking of buying another first gen powerbook g4, but maybe I'll try and snag a pismo instead...

offtopic? Not even funny? damn, some of these moderators take the job *way* too seriously.
ah, well.
why is this flamebait? I laughed out loud when I read it :D

so you'd stay behind to be eaten by the approaching space goat?
or would you rather die of a rather virulent plague passed by unsanitized telephone handsets?
non-human's what? seems like you're missing a word in there, somewhere.
oh, did you mean non-humans? plurals don't have apostrophes. did you 'loose' your grammar textbook?
*lmao* mod this shit up :D
Wow, it seems worth checking out. Thanks!
