You know how many horseshoers are out of jobs now that people don't have to ride everywhere on horses? Or all the telegraph operators that have nowhere to work now that this dang telmemaphones are all over.
I still think 3d filming is stupid. I recently saw Tron: Legacy in 3D and was visually unimpressed, had no idea why till I realized I really got into the movie during several of the 2d scenes. Technology is awesome but I still don't get using our current 3d technology, it just seems to detract from the experience.
Yeah, we can sit around and be depressed about the rest of the news that we're not doing anything to change anyway. I don't know about you but sometimes I pick the fun route. Why'd you even open the article if you think it's a complete waste of time?
I don't think that's altogether correct. I remember reading in several different places how book publishers think it should be illegal to trade, lend or resell their books.
a Java based phone seem like it has a 386 processor instead of one out of a calculator in it? Or have we found a level of aggravating slowness that we will always have to accept and they'll just keep bloating up processors that should be insanely fast on a phone but apparently can't be?
Thank you, I totally agree. I mean, I sit here with a phone with a 1ghz processor that can barely run simple applications at an acceptable speed, because it's java. running CLI programs through the terminal does show that it has the speed in there somewhere.
Also, depending on how your corporation is set up, it's possible that the only way to pierce the corporate veil is for payroll taxes. Anyone who signed paychecks could be held personally liable for those taxes, but anything else stops at the corporation. So if it's your company, your salary should equal whatever it takes to zero out your profit and loss after paying all your bills and then they can't come after that.
What I find interesting is that this guy is talking all about startups. The company blog goes back to 2008 though. If Expensify still is looking at themselves as a startup, maybe they're the ones who are stuck in a certain paradigm and can't get out of it. There's a difference between "startup" and small business. At a certain point you're not a startup anymore. There's the possibility that this guy is just looking to develop his product to a point he can sell the whole shebang to a huge company. He will think of his company as a "startup" until he's rid of it, and in that case, I wouldn't want to work there as a developer. It's been nearly 3 years, you are either a viable company or not, you may still be small and growing, but I feel that's different than startup. I could be totally wrong about what people mean by startup though. I worked in small business my entire life (though not "tech") and if you're around for this long I don't see how you're still starting up.
From what I've read, almost everything you read from people in China has already been censored and thus of course it's the supporters that you read from.
Do people older than 16 actually invest themselves that much in psuedo communication? Talk to people face-to-face sometimes, then internet trolls won't bother you.
Seriously Slashdot... when are you going to hire editors who actually verify submissions before letting them onto the front page. No better than the national enquirer...
Drunk driving laws aren't limited to public roads, the statutes usually read "anywhere in the state" in the spot where most traffic statutes will say "on a public highway"
25K as a starting teacher is good? My first entry level job paid over 40K (in a career sense not a flipping burger sense)and I had no college education. You pretty much have to have a bachelor's degree to be a teacher at the very least. And no, they're not off for over 3 months a year. They have a lot of preparation to do and a good teacher would be researching and writing good lesson plans during that time if they didn't have to work another job just to make ends meet. I don't think that people are only motivated by money, if they were then there'd be absolutely 0 good teachers and that's not the case.
Sorry to burst your bubble but it's highly apparent that most of this country just doesn't find public education to be a big priority. There's a reason why our schools are so far behind other countries in abilities such as math, reading, problem solving, etc. The reason isn't because we have great teachers and funding for education.
If we want well trained and highly educated people to become teachers, we have to be willing to pay for it. If you had $75k in student loans, why on earth would you become a high school or middle school science teacher making next to nothing? We don't pay teachers what they're worth and it's only rarely that we happen to get incredibly passionate and intelligent people in the career since there is no motivation to become a teacher once you leveraged the rest of your life on a costly education.
you silly people and your "elements" and "facts" and what not.
#overthehead Um, I'm pretty sure GP was talking about that article more in the sense of "now we have it so we don't want anyone else to"

For $2000 I can make it go to 12

Dude, if you are going to use a word that many times, learn to spell it.

It's called getting your license revoked and it happens quite a bit. But these people still can get in a car and turn a key.
I agree, I can't see how this is an invasion of privacy, that's like saying your toilet is invading your privacy cause it can see your genitals.
