My girlfriend works on the computer at home so the machine is always on. We also do run BOINC projects on our machines. I guess there's a better way to setup a network file server than to just map a drive on a networked machine, but isn't that the essence of a file server anyway? It works fine for me anyway.
Maybe I don't understand the question, but I installed a 500GB drive as a slave in one of my numerous machines at home, partitioned it to appear as 2 250GB drives on the network, set them as shared on the network over my Netgear router, then mapped to the drives on the other machines - wireless and wired. Transferring files is very fast. I even signed up for free DNS and installed free FTP software on that machine to use one of the partitions as a password protected FTP site that our friends and family have access to. Very easy to share files and pictures that way. My Azureus downloads directly into the FTP partition so I have access to those files anywhere in the world I have internet access.
I'm not a computer genius by any stretch and this setup can be done by anyone who knows how to use Google to learn stuff. But like I said, given that I'm no genius, maybe I'm just missing the gist here. I've never tried to stream anything over the network and maybe that requires more advanced software, I don't know. My XBOX 360 takes care of my media access as I have it pointed to all the places I have stuff stored and it works like a charm over my THX stereo and HDTV.
I phrase a majority of my searches as questions already and get back reasonable results. Like Norvig said, it's about the words in general and their meaning together in a phrase. In my experience I ask and I receive. What's the problem?
From the looks of things it appears the edits were warranted. There is an obvious anti-war/anti-Bush slant to the original article so some "cleaning up" and clarifying was necessary. I applaud whomever was responsible. The liberal anti-everything pussies are getting out of hand. I'm sorry, did I type that out loud?
Wow. Poetic justice will be when the good commander's remains have been "assimilated" into the earth and trace mineral remnants of his body are dug up in a million years and used by Bill Gates future relatives as an ingredient for a future Microsoft organic interface. If I can write a book and save it to Word on my XP machine without Microsoft having any claim to it, then why would they have a claim to an original thought in my head that I happen to save to a Microsoft device? I understand his statement was in half jest, but it's a dumb statement nonetheless. You penguins really need to get over your Windows envy.
So what then do I do about keeping my BOINC projects humming along? Isn't the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence or Folding@Home, even Einstein@Home more important than saving a few measly dollars per year on my electricity bill? What if $90 is what I spend for coffee in a month without blinking an eye? Why would I care about $90 in a year? Is my home-office carbon footprint really THAT big? I'm thinking not and certainly not at the expense of my BOINC stats. I'm in the top 99.6 percentile for cryin' out loud! I'll pollute our landfill with mercury from my CFLs but I'll be damned if I'm going to have my BOINC status take the hit for a future that I'll never see.
This whole story seems silly starting with the apparent joke about "typso" (not funny, just stupid). The question I have is, can any blunt object work on the screen or does it need the minute electrical impulse from a body part? What about little "thumb blisters". Sort of like thumb rings with a bump that touch the screen with more accuracy. It would give a nice tactile "click" when it touches the screen and could somehow attach seamlessly into the housing when not in use. I throw that out there free of charge. Just send me a royalty check when you start to sell them.
Has there been a discussion here about the increased use of filtering software by corporate America to reduce the average worker's ability to surf the web? Yeah yeah, this is off topic, but I can't see the pics here at work and it's annoying as hell. I'm just waiting for the day that they add Slashdot and their ilk to the list of filtered sites.
Man I used to play the shit out of Red Alert II: Yuri's Revenge. What a great game. I'd forgotten all about that. Sorry...was just reminiscing out loud.
Sure, my post is mod'd Troll, but the original story is the Troll post. The paranoia exhibited by the people with "Smartest Man in the Room Syndrome" that frequent this website just cracks me up. I'm not angry, I'm amused.
As with any type of club or mind control organization, the churches in question are just doing what's always been done. Back in the middle ages - the days of my youth - basketball, summer camp, and other such group activities (whitewater rafting, repelling and skydiving in my young adult days) were sanctioned by the church to entice young people into thinking religion was just harmless fun. The activities were fun, but most of us here probably stopped at that. Having Halo nights is just an extension of that. In terms of Halo v. GTA the two don't compare. Apples and oranges to be sure.
Two words. Para noid. Let me guess, you think the WTC was taken down by the CIA, right?
MS is NOT intentionally breaking XP and anyone who would think so should seek professionally counseling.
I see so many conspiracy theories on this site pertaining to Windows and it just cracks me up. I've been using Windows since 3.11 and other than screwing around with it and breaking it myself in the early days, I've hardly ever had a problem with it since 2000. Any problems I do encounter have either been driver related or promptly remedied with online support or a prompt reply from a MS tech rep. XP has served me very well for my day job and my home business running all sorts of varied, resource intensive software. I also use OS X for work and home and enjoy it's benefits as well, but all you MS hating penguins really need to just give it a rest already. Either that or put on your aluminum foil hats and shut yourselves in with your Linux boxes and leave the rest of us "normal" folks alone.
That comment is not even worth the cost of the minuscule amount of electricity required to stimulate the very few brain cells necessary to respond to such ignorance.
Costco has a Halo bundle with all the goodies. Halo themed enclosure mod, Halo themed controller, Halo 3 game, and headset. Sure it's a Costco bundle, but it's still cheaper than buying all things separately. Just get a friend who has a Costco card.
I can't think of any other tool that has given the 1st Amendment so much rich and solid soil with which to grow and have blossom free speech.. Only Larry Flynt can claim to have had so much influence over how we are able to express ourselves commercially and publicly.
At the bottom of that flame article there's a link saying that Snopes had stopped pushing those ads, so this story was already old and obsolete before it was posted. http://sunbeltblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/update-on-snopes-pushing-adware.html

Gee. Imagine retailers wanting people to spend more money in a free-market, capitalist, consumer-driven economy. Shocking.

...but isn't it Bayesian filtering? I mean, if we're going to talk about stupidity on the net, let's call a spade a spade. I'm just sayin'.

Hah! You've stumbled upon his answer. P2P throttling. Notice how only the purple bar in the rainbow gets smaller?!
These internet experts should probably talk to each other. But then this story is probably bogus "the sky is falling" hype anyway.

Sell the drums. Duh.

SONOFA! I was going to say that and would therefore have had my first positively moderated post! Oh well. Fuck it. Back under the bridge for me.
A lot of the people who should be on a jury are smart enough to know how to answer the questions in a way as to get themselves disqualified.
Who said total nerds weren't funny? It's a wonder with comedy like this more pocket protector types don't get laid.
