    most people (ie, non-slashdotters) take the RV to get away from the constant barrage of tech and telecom, to see sights not (web)sites, to look out the window and not at Windows.

    slashdotters don't see sights on Windows they prefer KDE or Gnome

    And AVG rewritten in Pitch, with extra notifications windows and a little pop-up which helpfully summarizes whatever you're looking at, in case you happen to be... I don't know, woefully myopic to the point that you can't read the window you just clicked on.

    It's not myopic, it's being over 45 and can't remember where you set down your reading glasses

    The only thing I'd add, is that if we could find a way to have less soldiers in the way of bombs and bullets, we could be less aggressive on helmet designs too. Ah well.

    I would also add, if we were less aggressive, there would be less civilians in the way of bombs and bullets. Given that they don't have any helmets, they would benefit even more.

    My understanding is that any attempt to board a plane or cross a border, implies consent, which makes the searches consensual. If you don't want to be searched, don't try to get on the plane or enter or leave the country.

    *I am a Canadian who since the Department of Homeland Security, tries to avoid traveling to the USA.

    I am in the Army and, while I'm not sending texts in the middle of a battle or something, a lot of my admin messages are time sensitive or I can't wait til the next time I can pull over.

    Numbers, like words, vary in the amount of meaning they have. Consider for example "the" and "precise". You know quite precisely what I mean by "precise", but the "the" well, it's fuzzier.
    3 is much less meaningful than 3.14159.
    Look, you can even have puns -- 3.13159! ( "!" here is grammatical not factorial. I am definitely not referring to this)

    I don't know about the new passports, but RFID-enabled New York State Enhanced Driver Licenses come with a foil sleeve and a recommendation to keep the license in the protective sleeve when not in use.

    That's right - the government is providing tinfoil hats for your RFIDs already.

    As asinine as possible. The advantage of RFID is convenience. Let's use it and then make it less convenient to use.

    General lesson: Convenient or secure. That's an XOR.

    If you illegally sold an item, you can be required to pay punitive damages, and you can even go so far as to notify the buyers, but taking back the product (recalling it) is reserverd only for true "stolen goods" and even then only in rare cases, and usually not for retail products. Counterfeit products are often reclaimed, but not valid products sold simply without license or copywrite.

    This is the quandary of "Intellectual Property". When consumers break the license and make unauthorized copies, they're "stealing". When distributors break the contract, they're "adjusting" or some such. The proper interpretation of the metaphor of "property" is always taken to the advantage of the corporation with the best legal counsel.

    Tiglath Pileser II was King of Assyria from 967 BCE to 935 BCE (due to a peculiar way Assyrians had of counting).
    Of course if you want to include Windows ME and CE, then you may want to consider Dumuzid, the Shepherd, "who is not to be confused with Dumuzid, the Fisherman". He was was the 5th pre-dynastic king on the Sumerian king list (before ca. 2900 BCE)
