A big company or even a ghost company can blow up your proyect because it looks like the application of a concept they patented but never developed. On the other hand, China is allowed to mass produce copies of western products and never face the consequences.
How many uncorrectable/reallocated sectors do you consider hazardous?
My main HD is a 1TB Seagate 7200. I first noticed a SMART alert in Ubuntu with a number of reallocated sectors of around 45. A year or so afterwards, it reads 52.
Mine uses a numeric-only password with a limit of 4 for read-only access, but for the rest of operations I must enter a 7 character pw made of chars and numbers.
Symbols are troublesome if you use different keyboard layouts. In many countries people bring along computers bought in the US because they're cheaper but set the keyboard layout to the local one, so that in a QWERTY most letters are right, but symbols don't match. In fact, the laptop I'm using right now gives an ñ if I press the semicolon.
Also, writing symbols in a cellphone can be a PITA, even more if the local echo is ***
I get pissed when I have to break apart (not disassemble) a radio, walkman or MP3 player because the solder under the earphone jack (or to the batteries) has become loose. I get pissed when I have to spend $40 on a new power brick for my laptop because the cable has broken from the base of the plug and there's no electronics store left in my town to buy a new one. I get pissed when my $30 or more remote starts malfunctioning because of the dew under the chiclet keyboard and it cannot be opened without leaving permanent marks on it. I get pissed when I cannot get to the failing remote control key module inside my car because no one seems to know where can it be hidden. Or when I cannot make a working copy of the key without spending at the vendor, whilst knowing that most robbers will be able to start my car at will without the damned RFID.
I know most things have become too complicated or miniaturized for hobbysts, but in most cases it's just that the appliances are sealed not to be serviceable anymore.
In every PC I've had with WiFi, getting it to work under linux has been a complete disaster. Broadcom and Realtek alike. Nowadays it's not anymore a work-not work issue, but a work-at-full-speed-and-suddenly-drop-to-a-few-bps-range issue. I've given up.
We need a totally buff chick to throw a giant hammer into the video screen during Jobs's speech at an apple brainwash^d^d^d^d^d^d^d^d^d... product announcement.
There was a recent scandal here in Spain because the picture that comes with the fine showed the car passing in yellow, not red. Nobody was found responsible and nothing happened. There's also been known cases of shortened yellow lights in the US that give the victims no time to stop before getting caught in camera.
Speed cameras are easier to use as bait, though, because as soon as the revenue goes down the "authorities" just set a lower speed limit, even far below the safe limit.
As a doctor, I concede there's a payroll for us at big pharma. I couldn't care less about all the pens and cheap gadgets they give us with the name of the medication. But they give us something else, which is something we're obliged to have and produce evidence of: CME (continuing medical education). When big pharma takes us to a seminar or conference that may or may not spin around its product, they're giving us for free something the law forces us to get and which would be very costly if we had to pay for it ourselves.
A second way of getting us into their payroll is by hiring us as co-investigators to do last-mile tests of medication. In that case, because we're generating information for them they have no issue in paying us for it.
Please. Erase the US-centrical image of doctors. Around the world we're in a much lower salary scale. In Spain, still a 1st world country, a doctor makes an average of US$ 3500 each month. And most things cost the same or more than in the US.
I agree. Doctor here. Neurologist-to-be in my early-30s.
I Learned to read and write at 3. Zoomed through school on the top of my class. Was always treated as a fully functional ADHD. By 13 y/o I spoke spanish, german, english, programmed in Turbo Pascal and Turbo C, knew how to make many explosives, Rhummkorf and Van der Graaf generators, simple electronic circuits. Nobody thought it would be a problem.
The disease took its toll in med school. Still not sure why I took medical instead of a more scientific career. I became uninterested and was about to flunk twice not because of my diagnoses but the fact I couldn't sit down and memorize diseases and treatments. My PDA saved my career. Sometimes I feel as if I had never gone through med school at all.
Not, after 3 years a neurology resident while every doctor I work with praises how bright my reasonings are, but they despise my oblivious attitude towards the patients and the rest of the team. I've been given an ultimatum and for the first time in my life I'm into medication in order to save my career. I've been taking it for 3 months now and everyone around has noticed a huge change.
Indeed, when someone says us doctors are making this stuff up, I lose my temper. They have no idea what's it like to be unable to concentrate even on the things you like the most.
If the pickpocket is a child, as it will always happen, it won't matter if you record his face, voice and those of his mother giving him instructions in some eastern tongue.
to force stubborn IT departments into upgrading their enterprises' PCs. There's lots of them that keep a vast array of zombies with IE6 installed just because they fear anything else will be incompatible with their intranet software.
SS and progressive taxation affects qualified workers the most. And the most qualified non-financial workers make an average of less than 1/3M a year, of which half goes away in taxes. Some manage to get a huge cut on their taxes by appearing as societies of two, but most professionals are unable to do that due to the nature of their work.
Thus, when taxes are raised "on the rich", it's your surgeon and not the CEO of the clinic they're talking about.
May be so, but here in Spain what you cannot call yourself without being frowned upon is "right winger". And that includes anyone that doesn't agree with socialism. Once you get branded as a right winger, conservative or economically liberal it's down the inevitable slope to being called fascist and then ostracized.
I had the same happen to me in medical school. A doctor I was making a database for had left his webmail open and some gossipy students found a proof of infidelity, which they forwarded to the victim (leaving a trace in the server). I was blamed for that because "He knows about computers, so he must have broken into the account for sure". My parents gave me no support whatsoever and I had to solve the case on my own to prove innocent. Still, I felt afraid to make a fuss about it and didn't even get an apology.
For most of us, "unnatural" really means "disgusting to me". There's nothing natural or unnatural. As long as something occurs within nature and following its rules, it's natural. The "natural" thing is some kind of 'argumentum ad verecundiam' fallacy.
Evolution doesn't equip any being at all. It just works if the non-equipped are killed before breeding or if the equipped are better breeders.
Scrapie or CJD are normally ocurring and normally fatal. In the case of CJD, the mean age is around 65 y/o: long after the average human has had its offspring. What's more: an age that most humans from longer than a century ago didn't reach.
We have no means to stop the reaction or deal with the products. And even if some of us had them: unless the disease did strike before 30 y/o, evolution wouldn't give a **** about it.
You are right in that cows eating corpses of sheep doesn't occur under normal circumstances. We know it can happen among primates, though (Kuru). Still, there could always be a way for prions to appear in cows (as they appeared in sheep and in humans). Bestiality, promiscuity, homosexuality and prostitution have been blamed for the spread of AIDS, but those that feel constricted by conservative sexual practices put most of the blame on direct blood contact such as hunting, transfusions, surgery and wounds.
The theory is that prions are not neccessarily mutated but "misfolded" proteins, and they can provoke the same misfolding in neighbouring twin proteins by chemical bridging much like what happens when enzimes do their stuff. The misfolded proteins cannot be digested and precipitate, causing neuronal death. Because each prion turns many proteins like it into prions, their effect grows exponentially.
Here are the criteria for brain death. An in the case of children, they must be consistent with repeatedly flat EEGs throughout 48 or 72 hours depending on the place. Also, barbiturate and BZD intoxication must be ruled out.
* Unresponsiveness
o The patient is completely unresponsive to external visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli and is incapable of communication in any manner.
* Absence of cerebral and brain stem function
o Pupillary responses are absent, and eye movements cannot be elicited by the vestibulo-ocular reflex or by irrigating the ears with cold water.
o The corneal and gag reflex are absent, and there is no facial or tongue movement.
o The limbs are flaccid, and there is no movement, although primitive withdrawal movements in response to local painful stimuli, mediated at a spinal cord level, can occur.
o Apnea Test: An apnea test should be performed to ascertain that no respirations occur at a PCO2 level of at least 60 mmHg. The patient oxygenation should be maintained with giving 100% oxygen by a cannula inserted into endotracheal tube as the PCO2 rises. The inability to develop respiration is consistent with medullary failure.
* Nature of coma must be know
o Known structural disease or irreversible systemic metabolic cause that can explain the clinical picture.
* Some causes must be ruled out
o Body temperature must be above 32 C to rule out hypothermia
o No chance of drug intoxication or neuromuscular blockade
o Patient is not in shock
* Persistence of brain dysfunction
o Six hours with a confirmatory isoelectric EEG or electrocerebral silence, performed according to the technical standards of the American Electroencephalographic Society
o Twelve hours without a confirmatory EEG
o Twenty-four hours for anoxic brain injury without a confirmatory isoeletric EEG
* Confirmatory tests (are not necessary to diagnose brain death)
o EEG with no physiologic brain activity
o No cerebral circulation present on angiographic examination( is the principal legal sign in many European countries)
o Brain stem-evoked responses with absent function in vital brain stem structures
It may have to do with the fact that people who favor government regulation of everything because "It's the will of the people" and "You can vote them away" are the same people that claim GWB got into The Office by a fraud in Florida.
A really liberal system would accept immigrants without fear because competition would be based on capabilities alone.
What we have in 1st world countries is a huge welfare system that compels the rest of us to pay/compensate for the ones that look weaker, and thus these people will struggle to get in knowing that they'll have a better life here even without working than back home working their assses off. What's more: our governments don't stop here but encourage these people to create ghettos and avoid integration. Whether they do this to respect their cultures or to create a voting niche, it's noxious for the whole society as most people will think of them as parasites and they're easily identifiable because of their color/face/language. This, in turn, provokes more rejection and forces the state to intervene and discriminate for them even more.
Meanwhile, their countries of origin live on the huge money shipments back home while waiting for the critical mass to try and use their citizen's political weight in their advantage when negotiating with the 1st world country. Whether it's for money, territory or even religion and laws (yes: I mean Islam here).

I'd also like my wireless to run above 2Mbps AGAIN. It's so frustrating.

Simpsons did it!
You mean it's really Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson in disguise?

The Wife Acceptance Factor, in my case.
