  1. Computers on Magnetic Trunk Could Collect Moon Dust · · Score: 3, Funny

Why not just build large datacenters on the moon?

Seriously, we can power it all with solar power, and host all of our websites there. The lag isn't so bad (rougly 2 seconds to get a packet back at lightspeed). The heat from the machines could be used to warm up habitable spaces in the shade.

Best yet, all those computers will just soak up the dust like a magnet. Or, perhaps they could just launch thousands of those air dust cans with the mission...

Anyone else find it ironic that we are hard pressed to definitively outline the rights given to us, seeing as how the information about the act is cast in such a vague light by all those that quote it in daily life. The only anecdotal stories I hear concerning it involve lots of black markers, and a ton of hogwash project bluebook manuscripts that appear in underground ufology rings.

I've tried this lifestyle as a daily campus activity, and I have noted the following observations.
    • Laptop battery life still sucks. Someone start working on a solar solution :)
    • Even on campus, good WiFi hotspots are few and far between. We need hotspots that permit ssh tunneling, and encryption that works...Cell phones with internet hookups are probably the only option if you are backpacking Mayan ruins...
    • The home desktop will always be more comfortable, and as a result my files will always be there. Transferring them to the laptop on the fly is a pain when home upload speeds are so terrible with most ISP's
    • You lose lots of weight when you are out and about, seeing as how you don't have a home food supply to compel you. A major plus.
    • The public environment can be quite distracting, especially when you know people that always come and speak to you. Try and find a lonely corner, and suddenly finding a power supply and/or internet link can be challenging.

I for one would embrace such a revolution.

Modern photonics, if it works within a computer, will make it impossible to eavesdrop on a computer with a van-eck style of a attack. Granted, van eck phreaking a VGA cable may be doable (barely), and performing similar snoops on a motherboard may seem incredibly difficult even by today's standards, it is within the realm of possibility. Take a look at the field of acoustic cryptanalysis and its potential.

Now extend that into the electromagnetic spectrum, give yourself a very powerful broadband software defined radio and a good isolated faraday cage, and could it be possible to mount a similar attack electronically?

If photonics take over, we will for once be in a safe-zone of knowing once and for all that no overly powerful overseeing entity will be able to eavesdrop on any kind of electromagnetic emissions, so long as you don't have any light leaks.
