To me the commercial seems to imply the device is a laptop, that would have a hard-time sitting on your lap, but it makes neat noises. I think they should have pushed the tablet aspect more to the consumer.. but I'm not in marketing. Also, after viewing the commercial there is probably some surprise that the cover/keyboard is an additional accessory.

I don't believe Vista was "quite bug free", I remember an issue trying to copy files over 2 or 3GB until fix was released in a patch or the first service pack, I do not remember the details.
To be fair, Windows 8 under the bonnet is pretty damn good. Boot times, responsiveness, file copying, the task manager are significantly better on windows 8 than 7.

If you prefer a desktop UI on your desktop PC maybe it will be beneficial to the user experience in Windows 9 should the surface flop.

I also use WiiMC to play media from a samba server as well as gives it the ability to play DVD discs.

Install MATE. Mint's cinnamon UI is also pretty nice for standard desktop use.
Download a distro during the day, load it up in bed before you go to sleep. I've loaded most of the distros listed on distrowatch.com in this fashion.
