AMD has *THE WORST COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT I HAVE EVER SEEN*
It blows me away that AMD doesn't run an ad campaign that says something like "AMD: Faster"
AMD's consumer messaging and advertising is hilariously bad. (Just look at their website, its like something some secretary did in Frontpage).
AMD continuously acts like they don't have the money to fight Intel's 170 Billion Dollar image. Its hilarious. AMD is an EIGHT BILLION DOLLAR COMPANY! I know 2 million dollar dot-coms that have a more savvy marketing department.
AMD should position itself as the more expensive, elite brand. Not the sucker underdog.
If you can't meet production numbers, be Mercedes. Be Ferarri. Don't be Saturn and charge a higher price for crying out loud.
1) Ensure that the hundreds of millions spent on their new German production plant (set to open soon) was worth it by creating a media frenzy & consumer demand.
2) Cast a spotlight on Intel's unfair marketshare by once again proving that Intel's products are inferior and not capable of maintaining their position in the marketplace without unfair practices.

It looks like Slashdotters make fine young Capitalists. After the/. rumour was posted today, the WEBB.OB stock has already gone up 150% and continues to rise.
Its at.25 cents now... If the rumours are true it could be at $5 tomorrow.
It's important to note that Intel and AMD just want to support virtualisation in hardware but you still need a virtual machine monitor to run on it. This will be something like VMware or Xen - the hardware doesn't natively implement virtual machines, just provides assists for a VMM wishing to do so.
AFAIK AMD and INTEL are making VM monitors. As I understand it AMD Pacifica or IntelVM will compete directly against VMware and Xen. The hardware *will* natively implement virtual machines.
This is a last desperate move from a company who knows its already beat.
Why?
AMD released its VM simulation software (a preview of its Pacifica technology) today. The new AMD Pacifica technology will allow multiple OS's to run on a single CPU as virtual machines.
Intel -- (IMHO always pathetically playing catch up to AMD these days) -- has also promised a VM system in the coming months.
So we've got $180 Billion Intel and $7 Billion AMD competing for the VM space, and VMware in a desperate last ditch effort to entrench themselves as the industry standard, opens up their API.
I hate to say it, but it ain't gonna work. The heavyweights are coming.
I'm still waiting for all those massively multiplayer online games that were promised on Xbox Live.
For most people I know, the Xbox was essentially a "Halo Box", and the amount of "Downloadable content" has been pathetically scarce.
I've yet to see a game "patch" itself using Xbox Live (something else that was promised). Hell, I actually went out and bought the re-release of Morrowind to play the bug-free version.
And now MSFT is coming out with the 360 and promises of what's coming down the pike?
Fool me twice, shame on me.
I've never owned a playstation, but I'll be getting the PS3 and buying a linux modchip for my Xbox at the same time.
What about the Martian Poles
on
Ice Lake on Mars
·
· Score: 2, Insightful
There's something I've never understood about this quest for water on Mars.
First off, this "ice" thing doesn't seem like a big deal to me. When I was 8 years old I had a picture of Martian ice caps on my wall. (Yeah.. I was like that). So why is this a big deal? Because its at the bottom of a crater in a less than frozen area? How does that make life more likely? Clearly the bottom of that crater's pretty inhospitable too...
Secondly -- I've never understood why we don't look for water in a place I would think is the most obvious: in the periphery of the ice caps. Wouldn't liquid water most likely be in the place where the caps melt? It seems highly likely that Martian ice caps perform similarly to Earth's ice caps -- sloughing off ice into a temperate zone.
Why do Mars' frozen poles not get more attention in this quest for water?
In fact, I'm sitting on an incredible story right now and I'm not telling anyone what it is. Nope. Nu uh. No way. (CmdrTaco will post it himself next Thursday).
Let me get this straight... if you're caught with a pirated version you're offered a discount? (or a free version altogether) Seems like a great way to shop!
Only suckers will pick up a boxed copy from the store from now on...
"they can still fill out a counterfeit report and receive a copy of Windows XP Home Edition for $99 or a copy of Windows XP Professional Edition for $149, Lazar said.
Windows XP Home normally sells for $199 and Windows XP Professional Edition usually costs $299."
Better how? If ease of locating and installing graphics drivers is your basis of evaluating CPU's then... sure... but that's an odd way of evaluating a CPU.
But since my Linux box is (like most others I imagine) a server and not a game machine... that's not really the issue.
For those looking for a faster CPU with superior architecture (typically how I like to evaluate a CPU) there's no contest.
I went into "System Configuration" and changed the color of those little 'yellow' tabs... to more of a bright pink color.... and then my computer melted.
Console development is cyclical. To claim any release in the cycle has "First Mover Advantage" is to start the 'calendar' at a point convenient to your argument.
The only "First Mover" in the console business is Atari.
That's it. Everyone else is coming out with successive and improved products. The question "Does Microsoft have First Mover Advantage?" belies a lack of understanding for what "First Mover Advantage" is.
Furthermore, there is nothing revolutionary or "First" at all about the Xbox. It doesn't have the fastest processor, GPU, bus or best resolution. It is Microsoft's latest product, in a long line of competing products. It isn't particularly special in any way.
And not to be partisan on the issue, but at least the PS3 is introducing a radical new CPU design into the equation.
America is the most self critical, free society in the world. Protection of individual rights is stronger here than every country in Europe. (Yes. Europe. Where individual freedoms are very loosely legislated).
Your statement: because I want to live in a nice place sends shivers of "not my neighborhood", anti-immigration, social controlled Europe up my spine.
You should study what's happened in France re: individual rights over the last 10 years before you post ignorant crap like that.
I couldn't agree more.

My 2 cents.
Right now they have 2 objectives:
1) Ensure that the hundreds of millions spent on their new German production plant (set to open soon) was worth it by creating a media frenzy & consumer demand.
2) Cast a spotlight on Intel's unfair marketshare by once again proving that Intel's products are inferior and not capable of maintaining their position in the marketplace without unfair practices.

Pthtpth!
Why is AMD so bad at communicating to consumers the most basic of messages: WE MAKE FASTER CPU'S!
Guaranteed -- most consumers have no idea that AMD chips are faster.

Prediction: Intel gets their ass handed to them over the AMD lawsuit. First in Europe, then (after another year of wrangling) in the U.S.
Just wait until Dell gets subpoenaed. That's when the real fun will begin.

AMD's 64-bit dual-core architecture spanks Intel.
Call Dell and ask for an AMD based machine.
You'll get a very scripted answer of how AMD suffers compatibility problems, overheating, and is slower than Intel.
I asked if AMD had any chips that were faster than Intel (you know like the 64 bit dual core CPU's which every gamer knows well).
The answer? "No, AMD is really a second rate product and is not reliable". He followed with "Nobody is looking for AMD. They are really very junky."
Amazing! "Junky!" One must wonder why then is Intel now copying AMD's "junky" architecture?
Apparently no one told this guy that HP, Sun Microsystems, Lenovo (Thinkpad), and Hitatchi all went AMD within days after the lawsuit was filed.
Well, we should probably ban this whole Internet thing then.
I went into "System Configuration" and changed the color of those little 'yellow' tabs... to more of a bright pink color.

Poor stupid humans.
What unbelievable balls: "Dear Internet... please rewrite your content to work with our upcoming non-standard software release."
On all other planets in the universe, interoperability is the responsibility of the software developer.
