  1. Re:Then make games that are fun for more than 4 ho on Do Gamers Want Simpler Games? · · Score: 1

Personally I used to play a lot of the longer games (mostly strategy types) but lately I've gotten into games that have a lot of shorter sections like Plants versus Zombies or World of Goo. That's due to two things. First is it's easy to play a section when I have a little bit of time and there is a certain amount of replayability since you can change your strategy. Secondly I was running low on disk space for a long while. That meant I couldn't put one of the large games on the system. Now that I've added a new HD I'll probably be putting on some of the larger games again like Supreme Commander and Age of Empires 3. I would love to say I'll be putting Command and Conquer 4 on the system but based on what I'm hearing about the game I don't think I'll be buying it even though I played all of the previous games in the series. Som at least for me, both short and long games are great. Which one I go for depends on how much time I have. I'll definitely be looking at Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 when they become available. Both games will take a long time to finish, but they are also broken up into short sections that probably won't take more than an hour or two to finish. That seems to be the best approach since it allows the player to maintain their progress in the game while allowing them to quit at just about any point.

A Usenet server doesn't have to handle 5 TB of traffic unless it is going to carry every newsgroup out there. It's entirely possible to get that traffic flow down to a much manageable level (probably no more than a few megabytes a day) if you only carry the text groups. Even if you want to carry binary groups you don't have to carry everything. So an admin can set the level of traffic to match what they need and not see everything coming into their server only to be dropped down the bit bucket.

I can tell you that my main interest in SCII lies in the single player game. I don't think I ever spent more than a few hours in multiplayer mode on Star craft . It's just not interesting to me since it comes down to rushing the other player and I'm not into that. Even if I got good at it then it would just be me doing the same thing. I enjoyed multiplayer mode in Diablo/Diablo II/LOD much more than I ever did in Starcraft. I can't imagine how many hours I spent playing DII online. That's one problem I have with the new take Blizzard has with Starcraft II. I would prefer them to release a version with all three races playable in single player mode. Then if they want to carry the story further release expansion packs that develop the story for each of the races. That isn't going to happen but it's how I would have prefered them to release the game.

I think the same could have been said 50 years ago or even 100 years ago. Most of the population isn't that interested in reading that much whether it be a newspaper or a book. The fact that the information is even easier to get now (on the computer) doesn't seem to be changing things as the general populace seems to be as clueless as ever. So newspapers will slowly fade away due to better mechanisms becoming available like online distribution where it's easier to update stories, or one day soon we may see electronic papers where you get a sheet of a plastic like material that displays the stories and is easily updated for a small fee. Something that combines the easy access to the news with the feel of holding the paper in your hand.

As it looks like the original site, celebrityapes.com, is off the net you can see other images that have had the same modification made to them here: http://www.somethingawful.com/d/awful-links/celebrity-apes.php So while the image may certainly be seen as offensive to a lot of people it doesn't seem to have been meant as a racist act or particularly aimed at the Obamas as many politicians, actors and other famous people have had the same photo manipulation done to their images.

When I went to the bencamm site it was slow as expected and the slow server mentioned in the status area was the bencamm site and not Google analytics. So it looks like Firefox 3.5.5 does the right thing and Firefox 3.6 didn't do the right thing.

  13. It's not that people want to use 100% of their available bandwidth all of the time. It's just that when they want to use their bandwidth they expect it to be there. I don't download that long. On my worst days (usually after not downloading anything for a week) I might set up downloads that take an hour or two to complete. But that's typically at times when most other people won't be using the network so it's doubtful I'm ever in competition with other people on my node. Yet thanks to this new system I'll be penalized with slower downloads even though there's no congestion on my node. That's not what Comcast talked about before. I would be okay with them instituting some throttling when there is congestion but this article doesn't mention any congestion necessary for the first throttling condition.

But you also want to build incentives in the system for people/corporations to invest in new products/upgrading infrastructure/new jobs. Luckily there was no need to migrate anything since the computers were just for testing. With Windows I can't say that any of the installs were bad, but getting all of my programs working typically takes a few days as I work through the various programs/updates and addons that I need to add. Perhaps you don't understand the tens of comments before yours but no one is trying to dictate how you play. If you want to play online only then go right ahead. What people have been complaining about is having an option taken away from them. That's it and I'm sure you know this. Having the option to play on a LAN doesn't stick us back in the 90s since you can still play on Battlenet with your highspeed connection while other people may choose to play on a LAN. Just because you love playing online with a high speed connection doesn't mean everyone wants to play that way so what's wrong with having the option to play on a LAN. A LAN is a perfect environment for some friends to get together and have some fun. Maybe take a break during the day to cook up some food and relax and then get back to playing. As others have said there's a lot of enjoyment in playing a game against a friend when you can see his reaction to your taking out his best character. Also as others have said it's not always possible to be connected to the Internet even if you have a LAN setup. There are times (such as if you are playing after hours at work) or places (maybe there is no Internet connection in the room or even the building you are in) where it's just not possible to get even one computer on the Internet let alone a number of them. I don't see why anyone would be bothered by other people wanting a LAN option to be available. It doesn't detract from the Battlenet experience, and it's something that many of us grew to love about the original Starcraft and Diablo games. I hope that Blizzard reconsiders and adds in LAN play for Starcraft II and Diablo III.

Reading through the article I suspect there's more to this than the summary says. It's a particular school at the University that is involved with how computers affect society. They are also using the Ipod for much of the communication between the students and the professors. So the professors have a sure way of communicating with the students, and the students have a sure way to reply back to the professors. Also there's a built in way to see how having such a device affects their lives (which is part of what they study.) Finally the article also points out that they are hoping this will lead to the students developing more apps for the Iphone which might be useful for the University as well as good practice for the students. So it appears the attendance taking application is a small part of how they intend to use the Iphones.
