Earlier this week I finished building a brand new batch of reflow furnace controllers that use dual Z80s. The design dates from the 80's and was been superseded by a controller that uses an AMD SC520, but some customers of the furnace manufacturer we sell the controllers to, want to keep using the same equipment they've had for 20 years with no changes, so my company still builds brand new electronics with 4MHz Zilog Z80 processors every few years.
Every time we think the product is finally dead, we get an order for more.
Snarky or not, you're wrong. The Z80 was backwards compatible with the 8080 instruction set, but it had a lot of it's own changes and extensions. Z80 code will likely not run on an 8080.
The story did not establish that the lights were too short to reasonably come to a stop. No, the story didn't establish that the light were too short. The traffic engineers that penned the laws enacted by the state legislatures did.
I'm having a hard time figuring out which part you don't understand. A minimum safe yellow light duration is established by traffic engineers and becomes codified in the law. Municipalities violate state law and disregard those minimum yellow durations. People complain because municipalities are violating the law and established safety standards, for the sake of revenue.
, if you can manage it reasonably. And what if the yellow is so short that you can't manage it reasonably? That's why there is a statutory minimum duration for the yellow light.
You too? I wrapped up The System of the World, and had to go back to rereading Cryptonomicon to catch all the references and foreshadowing (aft-shadowing?) that suddenly makes sense now.
Pedophilia is the sexual attraction by adults to prepubescent children. There is no specific act associated with pedophilia, outside the mind of the pedophile. You are advocating thought crime.
Creation/possession/distribution of child pornography and child molestation are not the same thing as pedophilia.
Just because Steve Bellovin apparently (your link is missing) thought of the same quote in regard to the same incident as myself, does not mean I was quoting Mr. Bellovin.
What makes you think capacitors would be any slower to charge than a compulsator would be to spin up? Or that a capacitor bank can't provide multiple shots?
It looks to me like the choice for energy storage would come down to the logistics of the particular installation, more than anything.
The best bet would probably be to use something like tungsten for the rail surfaces, to minimize the arc vaporization. I doubt you'd get ceramics conductive and physically durable enough to be suitable.
The energy required to kill someone is nil. The energy required to poke a hole in someone is somewhat higher. The energy required to poke a hole in enemy armor is higher still.
This isn't for killing 'someone', it for poking big holes in things that are very hard.
An effective military rail gun would need a huge vessel to carry the capacitor bank and a nuclear power station to make a rail gun practical. Where is the Navy going to get something like that?
One confounding aspect of trying to permanently erase things from solid state drives is the fact that most flash drives incorporate wear-leveling. You may not be able to over write specific physical sectors without just overwriting the whole drive several times.
I'd rather take my chances with NBC than add the extra complication of the union screwing me over. The worst problem with unions is that if they had their way, I wouldn't even get that choice.
Who said anything about a deterrent?
Recidivism among people who receive capital punishment is 0%.
Capital punishment is.

Nothing, If you've got more money than you know what to do with.
The lawyers travel time and business class airfare are going on your bill.
How about when powering up a device that's been off for a while?
Or if the ambient temperature suddenly shifts? Not everything lives in a stationary box.
I've had to apply conformal coatings to enough industrial electronics to know that humidity does cause issues for them.
The stuff my company has done in manufacturing power generating wind turbine controls makes this thing's specs pretty unimpressive.
How well does it work in a condensing atmosphere?
It's easy to work down to 0C when conditions are perfectly dry, it's another story when everything starts to sweat.
And what kind of airflow are we talking about when operating at 122F ambient?

I hear that Harriet Tubman has experience with this sort of thing.
Nope, it's thanks to the hard work of all those trees.
Either way, I didn't have to work for it.
Free air is destroying the market for oxygen bars!
Any market that is so easily undermined was due for an adjustment anyway.

I'm not entirely sure I like people who try to blame sexual assault against minors on anything but the assailants.

"Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action."

But who is the enemy?

Are you suggesting that the projectile will have 3/8 the mass of the ship? (forgive me if that math is wrong)
That would be one big bullet.
