Well, now you do: RedHat out the box is horrifically insecure. We put a RedHat box up at home, closed off everything we knew about, put up a firewall, went to work and came home to find we'd been rooted. Now we have a Windows box doing the same job and it's never seen a second's problem.
Are you suggesting that people who use wheelchairs are retarded? I ask for information purposes only, as I am confined to a wheelchair and wasn't aware I was a "retard".
I agree with the rest of your statement, mainly because it's debatable whether Microsoft was ever a true monopoly. Alternatives still existed, such as Sun and Apple, either of which would have been happy to grab some extra marketshare when Microsoft pissed off enough of their customers with their increasingly onerous prictices.
Then again, how long would either of them last if Microsoft wasn't constrained by anti-trust law? That's really the only thing that keeps MS from buying up Apple just to eliminate competition in the desktop market. Had they done that instead of pouring money into Apple to keep it afloat a few years ago, the computing market would be very different, and I very much doubt it would be for the better. Even though I don't care for Apple or their products, their mere presence is beneficial to me in that any competition will drive innovation.
Oh, you mean the $150 million in non voting stock they bought? Yeah, thank the gods they did that. Without that, all Apple had to fall back on was, like, the $2 billion they had in cash & short term investments. No way they could have made it without that $150 million.
All the apps they are using are OS X native. They have plenty of ram, we have done clean installs, tossed prefs, zapped pram, made new users. All the crap Apple support suggests. The users still complain.
Whats yer next theory Einstein?
You suck?
Seriously, I've got a Blue & White G3/500 and it doesn't take anywhere near 20 seconds for menus to drop down. Most of the time it is less than a second, most of the time it is too fast for me to time. If it takes that long for menus to drop down, you must be doing something seriously wrong.
Here's an interesting graphic comparing ship size.
I notice they don't have the Vorlon planet killer ship on there. What was that, 15 miles across or something? In Star Wars, they needed something the size of a moon to pack the same firepower the Vorlons squeezed into a much smaller package. My point? Just that Vorlons kick ass.
Remember...the anticipation of an event is often enough to get you completely worked up. Try being told a 20mile carravan of tanks is coming at you, and they're 50 miles away. I'd be thinking 'surrender', wouldn't you?
Sure, I'd be thinking 'surrender' . . . right after I got done changing my undershorts.
I have used OS X though, I will admit, not on a daily, frequent basis, but have been encouraged with OS X and finally getting off of that 16-bit OS 9-or-less platform (5 years after Microsoft did it with NT).
In what way was Mac OS 9, 8, or even 7 or 6 (or any version of Mac OS back to 1.0 for that matter) considered 16 bit? Christ, even the MC68000 of the original Mac 128 was 32 bit from the programer's point of view. Even if you could argue that aspects of the 68000 were 16 bit, the 68020 was fully 32 bit and that was in Macs (the Mac II) in 1987. Are you certain you know what the hell you're talking about?
The public is, from what I've seen, more like the
surf class of olden times, miserable, but for all the evils of the king (Microsoft), this is a reliable leader and they trust it.
As someone who's actually inside the Borg cube I can tell you that security is currently our highest priority. Thousands of people across various product teams have attended security lectures, new development has been stopped, old code and new code has been stringently reviewed, an emphasis on secure defaults is beginning to occur, and new functionality is designed with security in mind before all else.
Of course some people will complain about why this has taken so long while others will probably say "better late than never" but either way it should be noted that a code review/security audit on this scale is probably unprecedented in software development history.
Isn't that because MS is the only one that had code insecurity of that magnitude in software development history?
Go look up the word monopoly in a dictionary. The MacOS is a commodity for personal computers, and the Mac platform is a commodity computer (albeit in a proprietary package
with a force-bundled OS (hmm... just like Microsoft...)). They're the only one that sells this commodity.
So who is forcing Apple to bundle MacOS with their computers? Or did you mean you're forced to buy MacOS if you buy an Apple computer? Well, since it's their computer, they can sell it any damn way they like. It would be a bit like complaining you can't buy a Ford car with a GM engine in it. It just doesn't make sense, unless you're a whining idiot.
"Macs have instant wake-up from sleep, unlike Windows"
/presses the power button
/sees "Writing hibernation file to disk"
/machine powers down
/powers machine up again
/waits 15 seconds
/is back at the desktop
oh look, we can do that too....
That's nice. Fifteen seconds is kind of a long way from "instantaneous", though. Also, I'm pretty sure "sleep", which the poster you're quoting said, and "hibernate", which you did, are different things. My G4 takes four seconds to wake from sleep. At least that's how long before my Sony CRT is powered back up so I can see something. Four seconds isn't instantaneous either, but it's a bit better than 15 seconds. I've heard people with Titanium Powerbooks say when they wake it from sleep by opening the lid, it's up and running by the time they have the lid open. What's the wake from sleep time like on the box you're using?
It isn't just you. When I read about the game and how it had X million happy users I was excited to try it. I tried it for about three or four hours and was bored out of my ass. I can't understand why something as lame as this is so popular. I'll tell you what was fun: Diablo 2. Now that was fun. Of course, is wasn't massive multiplayer and the universe wasn't persistent, but it was still more fun. Maybe I'm just a lame old fart, I dunno.
I suppose calling it Windux would result in lawyerish activities as well. How different does it have to be? How about Winnux? Or Linows? I think it is a travesty that they were able to trademark the generic term "Windows" in the first place.
they could only do that if those damnd F14s didn't absolutly dominate the sky.
I doubt there are many F-14s being used over Afghanistan, as they are Navy planes used in the air superiority/air interdiction role. You're probably thinking of the F-15, the Air Force plane used in the same role. Until the F-22 comes online, the F-15 is the best air superiority fighter in the world. Couple it with the AWACs and nothing lives in your airspace unless you want it to.
You know that clip where a huge B52 is escorted by a few F14s (Mosquitoes guarding the Teradoctile) and it drops a rain of bombs that never seams to end from it's cavernus gut.
Wouldn't it be more likely that the escorts would be Air Force planes, rather than a Navy plane? F-15s or F-16s maybe?
The choice of underlying OS is not the issue, it's all the extra effort they go through to protect their goofey little IP.
Let me ask you this: if it's so "goofy" and "little", why the hell hasn't the open source community been able to come up with anything that even comes close to touching it? ("It" being Aqua in this case.)
Well, then there's also the matter of the shrinking market for Macintosh games at the time they abandoned the Mac platform. I am talking about back when they refocuesd away from the Mac, by the way, not now that Apple may get their slice of the market back with the new MacOS 10.
And how exactly did they "abandon" the Macintosh market? Name one game they put out that was PC only. Halo originally was going to be a Macintosh and Windows release, so that doesn't indicate any abandonment by Bungie. Bungie has stated repeatedly that Halo will be coming out for MacOS/Windows. The last title they released before Halo was Oni, which is available for MacOS 9 and X (Bungie developed Oni before it was split off when MS bought Bungie out.) Before that it was Myth II, which was Mac/Windows. Bungie abandoned the Mac market? You're talking out your ass.
It's too bad that Microsoft has so invaded our culture they've been able to get their definitions added to the dictionary.
I have another definition I'd like to have added:
thief (thf)
One who sells software that is worthless.
Fortuantely, all my printed dictionaries are from the 80's, so they don't have this new-age BS in them.
Ok, smartass, I'll do you one better. The dictionary I'm using (hardcopy) was printed in 1957 and, guess what? It contains almost exactly the same definition of pirate that you're implying was added recently, including #3 that specifies reproducing works without authorization. What do you say to that, Mr. Pirate?
The way I read it, if the corporation as an entity refuses to admit wrongdoing and accept a remedy, the executives can be liable for prosecution and jail time, if they're found to have intentionally hidden it from the government.
You mean like falsifying video tape evidence? As far as refusing to admit wrongdoing, I think Microsoft pretty much has that one sewn up as well.
One thing that did not make any sense was when Gene Hackman called the aircraft carrier a "boat." In the navy a surface vessel is a "ship," while a "boat" is a submarine (not that it matters, since to a submariner, anything on the surface is classified as a target, hostile or not).
While I'm not, nor have I ever been, in the the US Navy, my understanding is that a boat is a sea-going vessel that can be taken aboard another sea-going vessel, while a ship cannot. The reason subs are called boats is they can be taken aboard a sub-tender. An aircraft carrier is definitely a ship. I mean, look how damn big they are. Except for in the movie "Abyss", when the alien ship surfaces and all the former Navy and commercial ships are sitting on its surface, and therefore have to be called boats, anything that large simply must be called a ship. Anyway, that's my understanding of the two terms.
Is the Windows computer connected to the network?

...and who among us hasn't done that?
Could you at least please spell "Motorola" correctly? Thanks.
I think maybe you meant serf rather than surf.
Unless I'm grossly mistaken, the dock originated with NeXT, not Microsoft.
Isn't that because MS is the only one that had code insecurity of that magnitude in software development history?
Just what is it that Apple is getting away with that would make even the robber barons of Microsoft blush?
So who is forcing Apple to bundle MacOS with their computers? Or did you mean you're forced to buy MacOS if you buy an Apple computer? That's only true if you think any GUI you can put on top of the x86 BSD is equivalent to the MacOS X GUI. I, for one, don't think that is the case.
I suppose calling it Windux would result in lawyerish activities as well. How different does it have to be? How about Winnux? Or Linows? I think it is a travesty that they were able to trademark the generic term "Windows" in the first place.
