emerge foo (for a fairly large range of foo) gets me most of what I want/need. But is there a standard, or at least universally compatible way to do things if it doesn't?
Speaking as a victim of NCLB, this comment is probably the most truthful i've seen all day.
(The schools I went to literally cut their gifted program just because they needed more funding for the special ed classes.)
Teachers depend on IT to do the work they want to do but don't know how to: stop the students from using the computers to waste time every time they turn around. People don't pay tax dollars so that we can let students post whiney blogs about how few people are friending them on myspace. Obviously IT can't decide case-by-case to block, so we have to make smart blocking rules. We shouldn't need to stop students from wasting time. We should instill in them the respect for education that will make them stay on task of their own free will.
You're part of the problem in public education.
Figuring out a clever way to work less and accomplish more is great, but if you let this continue, eventually you'll have a job where you walk in to work, push a button, get paid, and go home. "Visual Basic Programmer"
Fine, but allow them the opportunity to see failure as a learning experience.
:D
Not when you're managing a nuclear plant. (Which is also a bad match for the heros and drama queens.) Because of their failure, I'm learning how to kill zombies!
Calling Grand Theft Auto a thug life simulator is as reasonable as calling the Rainbow Six series anti-terrorist training simulators. (which, personally, i find absurd) I take it you've only played R6: Vegas? The old games were actually... you know... "as real as it gets".
Last time I checked, Nethack was still offering a silent, static screen of text as an ending with nothing else to do but play again as a different class. Yeah, but there's a certain sense of accomplishment in knowing that you're now the nerdiest person in a 100-mile radius.
Your lack of capitalization reveals your true nature. Do not attempt further usage of a keyboard, my friend; you may accidentally injure your fingers by jamming them between the keys in a violent display of futility.
It's like my wife blaming Windows Media Center for choppy video performance watching a video when it was really a flaky wireless router dropping packets. If the problem was with Media Center, your problem would be loss of resolution and/or simply not playing.
They could also sell "unlimited pirate" packages, throttling connections after 100GB/month.
On a more serious note, my cable seems to go full-speed even after I do absolutely insane things (60GB torrents, etc). Guess I'm lucky there, even if the cable itself sucks ass (so much so that they're not going to get their license renewed).
Consider that Vista contains approximately 50 million lines of code, and took 5+ years to develop. Consider that Linux Kernel 2.6.0 was 6 million lines of code, and contains *thousands* of drivers. That's a flawed comparison. You should be using figures for how many total lines of code there are in, say, the Ubuntu base install + one of the pretty 3D interfaces.

That's an international system, idiot.
Not if you duct tape a few 100-pound weights to your mower.

In Soviet Russia, tired old slashdot memes don't post you.
Get the Russians to do it; hell, they could even throw ALL corporations in prison.
Enhanced optical deflection impairment copy protection technology (read: pre-scratched).
AND you can hold a flashlight with your gun!
Actually, HD movies are closer to 10gb. Haven't you tried to pirate any yet?
It means its certified to not work perfectly with Vista. Guaranteed!

Here at Microsoft, the process tends to look more like this:
1. ???
2. ???
3. Profit!
Deny or Allow? In my day, we had Abort, Retry, and Ignore. And we liked it.
