"Nevermind the complete loss of any motivation to outperform your peers and better yourself."
Exactlly, why attempt to out proform or better yourself when you live in a small town where the only places to work are wallmart or fast food chains.
Most people will have a hard enough time getting through each day let alone save up for collage, but then again alot of people who work jobs like this for more then a few years forget the concept of trying to improve your self or to excel in anything. they just live to be in dept.
No, you will forget that we will still have the choice to work at mcdonalds or blockbuster, the other 2 predatory corporations that all share the same business plan. Move into small towns, destroy the economy, remove jobs, and basically take over any type of industry that might have existed in the past.
Yes you can save money, but their is allways a price, be it quality, ethics, or price.
Personally My ethics are not so cheap as to be willing to give them away so easily to save a few bucks.
"Of course, the obvious question is 'Do I trust Firefox less than IE?'"
No, asking your self this question is just down right stupid. This is the same as saying I do not trust something, but accept that level of trust because one of your other options is less trustful.
If you can't trust something DONT trust it. Im fucking suck of this American style of thinking our goverment and the media has us stuck on, the fact that if you have only shitty choices (presidents, tv, music, etc) then you should only choose from the shitty choices.
In fact the best choice in most cases is to not choose at all.
Most of the replys to my comments were mostly "I dont check, but someone will" comments.
Im willing to bet the number of people check code for security issues or exploites, has just as many chcking the code for seucirty issues or exploites to use.
I really dont see much of a difference of expcting someone else to verfiy a piece of software then having no one at all.
So you look at every line of code for each client application you run to verfiy that you are safe and dont need to be paranoid?
And with each update you go through each line and verfiy that its safe?
I totally agree with where your coming from, but your just pulling the bullshit card when saying that you only use open source software because its secure because you can check to make sure nothing is install that shouldnt be.
I thought suprnova was located in sweeden and didnt have to worry about copyright laws from the US.
I only assumed this because they had it posted in one of the return letters they got from a letter dealing with copyright issues.
Really, if its this much of a problem, then she shouldnt use it, she should use something that fits what she expects out of a machine.
If she needs it for work then dont bring your work home, or get a laptop that is just for work and run linux on your desktop.
If thats not good enough, then you have to take security into consideration. With the new security features in sp2 it helps alot for basic users.
Honestlly, how many people here that run unix/linux/mac etc that just install the os and do nothing to configure the machine, or secure it in some way (this also counts installing a firewall or other security settings at install (which you can do/ have to do with xp)).
And quite honestly, if hes a system admin he has no excuese for the machine getting to this level, if he cant keep his wifes machine secure and in working condition, I weep for the systems he admins.
Will people be able to get their money back that they had to pay on this tax? If so who will be paying it back?
Im suprised they will not just scrap this who tax levy (I think they call it a copyright levy in the news article).
"This year, MP3 sales are expected to generate $5-million of the $25- to $30-million in levies collected for musicians. The levies range from as little as $2 to $25 per device."
Anyone have any figures as to how much was spent because of this tax, not just for MP3 players, for but all media that is affected by this?
"My program requires a three month placement in the IT security and forensics industry."
Personally I would think it would be a bigger security risk to have an intern for 3 months then it would be without one.
When it comes to business and security, if they take security serious, I would be very suprised if they would ever let someone outside of the company will little expierence, for only 3 months come near their sensitive data.
"Symantec Corp. and VERITAS Software Corp. today announced a definitive agreement to merge in an all-stock transaction. Based on Symantec's stock price of $27.38 at market close on December 15, 2004, the transaction is valued at approximately $13.5 billion."
I have been looking into this game for a while, but have never played it.
heres a url thats not dead: http://www.perc.info/index.asp?page=159
How this person will be making money.
Hunting (including native forms of wildlife)
Mining (both minerals and enmatters)
Taxation rights on hunting and mining activities on the island
Income from the sale of land lots. Five lots per month will be available for sale under the duration of one year. These 60 lots alone have an estimated market value of 300 000 PED.
Ok, so you have a steady stream of income while people are using your island. You can gather large amounts of resources, or tax people from the resources they grab.
You can setup your own areas to sell your products. you have a vast amount of resources that are not avaiable in such a dence area.
You can sell all the plots available to sell (not the entire island mind you, just 60 areas that are up for sale (which is 300,000 in game cash not 30,000)).
If this game is like most other multi player games where users are willing to pay real money for virtual stuff, this guy could make a killing, and make alot of that money back fast.
So AOL owns netscape. They just did a press release about re-releasing netscape. I cant remember exactlly how to phrase this, but Netscape is built off the same technoogy that mozilla and firefox are right?
So Netscape, mozilla and firefox are available, plus 1/2 a dozen other browsers.
So now AOL is creating a new browser, other then the one used in the AOL applicaiton, other then Netscape, and other then the other browsers that use the same technology, and the ones that exist today?
I dont know all that much about xlink, but it uses their own servers and services, so im pretty sure its totally legal.
Its not just for the xbox, you play against anyone who is playing the game (pc etc) so its kina cool.
"I know that Apple isn't required to backport features to older units"
Why not, this is a huge requirement that most people expect when buying equiptment.
I could see if it was many years difference, like NES to SNES where technology had changed so much (6-8 years right), but come on, it was 2 years between the different units?
or a change like OS9 to OSX,yes alot has changed, but you can still use the basic built in features (network OS9 to an OSX box etc).
If the features are there, and they went out of their way to NOT let people use these features accross various versions of the hardware/software, then thats just plain wrong. Sounds like a forced upgrade if you want to use features with others.
Personally I dont think they will need to be cheaper as their media store will be the first and only store online alot of internet users (aka AOL users) will ever see.
Im guessing their main focus will be on their existing and fucture user base, and it will come pre installed on every free AOL installation disk.
I would guess (just an assumption if they dont do this all ready) they would have some nice built in feature where your music download costs would be included in your monthly internet bill, so no need to use your credit card or other payment types online.
There are alot of other reasons to mod your xbox then just pirating games.
For example, with xlink you can play alot (not all) xbox live games online for free, this alone saves you 15 bucks a month.
There is also the full customization you can do with your interface, up the disk drive, backup your system files, and purchesed games to your PC..
I use it primaarly for a multimeida system for playing mp3's off my pc as well as movies. The extra cost for the mod chip alone makes it worth the cost.

" 6.2% of US homes don't have phone service "
Does this include the number of people who have cellphones that dont want a land line.
Or how about the people that just dont want a land line. Or get digital phone service from their cable provider.
Will people be able to get their money back that they had to pay on this tax? If so who will be paying it back?

Yes and some people are willing to pay for, because they know they will make their money back (in time).
The game isnt just about "owning land" its more about creating a society, with economics, trade and so on.
Personally I would rather play a game like this then go around killing trolls and ogres. But then again I dont really play games much.
"President Bush is drawing up plans"
How about the President draws up some plans on fixing the broken relations we have with other countries.
Or how about some plans on making some vague attempt at working with the world, instead of trying to control everyone else.
How many billions or is it trillions now are we going to pay before we will say were sorry.
(and yes I know that scary terrorists dont handle apologies very well, but the threat was not so active a few short years ago, what happened?)

Yea I konw they have the Netscape service, but in this Slashdot article Netscape is planned to be re-released based on the firefox browser.
So AOL owns netscape. They just did a press release about re-releasing netscape. I cant remember exactlly how to phrase this, but Netscape is built off the same technoogy that mozilla and firefox are right?

"How can you ever fight bureaucrats"
Easy, how much money do you have?
Its wrong for the simple fact that they did this for the reason of forcing people to buy a new Ipod.
Just like the battery you couldnt replace, once its dead, you waste another few hundred dollars.
I dont know all that much about xlink, but it uses their own servers and services, so im pretty sure its totally legal. Its not just for the xbox, you play against anyone who is playing the game (pc etc) so its kina cool.

97.5%? How did the other 2.5% get through with your mail server turned off? Yeah I know... I got nothing.

I think the max is 232 gig per disk, with a max of 2 drives at a time attached to the system.
Ive heard talk of support for the 400 gig drives out, but that could just be vapor.
