What's illegal? Pirating music, or transferring music.
I think many people are starting to see a blurry line between these two. Many artists, small or underground freely distribute their music on the net because they want their music to be free, or they want to be heard.
The RIAA is trying to make sharing music illegal, not just sharing copyrighted music, but all music. If people can get Free for music, why would they pay for it?
I work with a lot of bands in my area, and I have talked to a lot of them about this same situation, pirating music, and people "stealing" from them. Most of them laugh and go off about how they're just happy people are listing to their music.
The ones who complain the most are the ones who are greedy. I'm not saying that this makes music theft right, but real musicians can see that pirating music can benefit them, and if they see this benefit, they will see their not losing anything.
Do they really think this will work? Why would people go to a store that sells music to buy one of these cards when they can just buy the music while they are at the store?
So your options are. 1 Buy music at store 2 Buy card to download same music you could have bought at store. 3 Buy beer and download music for free.
Coke machines, Qwest Pay phones, Banners and signs all around the gym and around the sports fields. Hell look at kids today, everything they wear now is a billboard.
Schools are the first place children learn to be consumers.
If you own and operate a website that has banner advertisements, and the ad system uses pop unders. Who is liable? The Website provider, or the advertisement provider?
This also affects Emails (and text messages) that are sent to your cellphone. ( With AT&T your cellphone you can have a email address that is your phone number).
I thought TV stations were required to switch to using digital specific equipment to transmit their shows by this time as well (2006).
Wouldn't this mean if the content providers (cable / satalight companies) didn't switch over, they would not be able to supply these stations to their customers?
[April 3, 2002] "Starbucks Express Starbucks just reported results of its trial wireless pre-order process for improving service. (One thing most consumers like less than paying high prices for a double tall latte is waiting in a very long line to order one.)
With this trial program, consumers are able to order coffee and baked goods wirelessly and pick up the order at a special counter about four minutes later. The order is automatically charged to a credit card. This new service, "Starbucks Express" should cut down on customer wait times, at least in theory, and begin to build a mobile commerce channel for the Seattle-based retailer. Consumers are even able to pre-program their phones and then just press one digit to order their beverage of choice and a cranberry scone to go with it. "
There have been accidents with cellphones causing explosions, plus it interferes with the intercom's they used when communicating with people who do not know how to use a gas pump.
Ever been in a gas station and wonder why they are piping in very loud an annoying humming sounds? Is some asshat on his cellphone.
I don't know about the rest of you, but the last thing I think about when backing up my data onto disk is if It will biodegrade in the next 100+ years. I'm more concerned on how well it will store my data, and the reliability of the product I'm using.
Another concern is what can make the disk degrade faster? Cold, Heat, moisture, butter? Will something cause my media to degrade in, say 20 years instead of 100?
I think creating a storage type that is specifically made to fail and destroy its self (unless that is something you are looking for) does not sound very reliable.
Great, so now their releasing new bills every 2 years.
Here is my situation. 25 machines, each machines bill validator costs $450.00
Total cost to update $11,250. Or $468.75 per month over 2 years just to keep my machines up to date with currency standards.
This does not include extra machines that will be added over the next two years.
In some cases you can get firmware updates for bill validators ($20.00-$55.00 per machine per update), but in most cases they will only do this through 1 set of bill updates, so you may still be good for 7 years if you pick a good bill validator company.
I didnt see anything in the articals about this. But what if someone goes to something.mydomain.org, Will this take them to a VeriSign website, or will they recive one of my error messages? I own the domain name, it's in use, so what happens with subdomain names?
I think some readers are missing some of the benefits or reasons for downloading books off the Internet.
How many people here have read spidermen #1? Or an out of print first edition book.
It gives people the ability to read books/comics that they would never be able to find, or own. Plus, if you're in need of a book for a school project, (or a book for collage) you now have access to many resources off the net.
And finally, what about libraries? Sure the library did buy the book, or received it through a grant, but their are many ways to get books for free, or near to nothing.
I'm not saying that stealing/downloading copyrighted material is right, but I'm pointing out the reasons why some people would.
Not true. Their are many POS systems right now that load up the main application, and then gather the required menus, prices, employee times, etc from a "master" filesystem, and then all transactions that take place are passed to and from the master filesystem.
The biggest drawback to these systems are the hard drive crapping out every few years (Ive had to replace 3 hard drives in 6 months where I work).
A diskless solutions would be great in these enviorments as long as you had enuff ram for a ramdisk and to store the software application and transactions long enuff to send to the fileserver.
I think people are confusing these machines with systems you would have at your house. The main benefit would be to companys that do not want workers using their machines for non work related issues.
A good example would be a telemarketing center, where only data is passed to the system, a little input from the end-user, and then stored on another system.
This would work well with a POS system as well.
Or, an MP3 player in your house where the system just pulls music off your file server.
Get the idea now?
Use without a hard disk.
on
Lindows Webstation
·
· Score: 2, Informative
How do you use it without a hard disk?
Simple, their workstations, they access a file server for storage and retrival of data/information.
Buy a good reliable black/white laser printer. And if you really need to print out high quality pictures (1 - 5 a month for most people if that) Just take it to kinkos/print shop.
Do the math. $400.00+ Just to have color prints. That's over 250 prints at kinkos. Then you need to replace the cartage, another 100-200 so another 125 at kinkos.
At this point you know everyone at kinkos, and get your prints for free anyways!
You would be suprised as to how many people know how to use napster/kaaza then know how to check their email.
My roommate hires many Latinos for construction work and shows them how to use the internet. The first thing he does, is shows them how to download porn off of kaaza.
To slow down counterfeit bills (about 1 in every 10,000 bills is a counterfeit). The US treasury will be releasing new bills this year. And every 7 years.
Having caught people using counterfeit bills from working in nightclubs and restaurants, it is starting to become a problem.
Next we need
popplers, Slurm, and solent cola.
This is why I never release my software, too many issues with licenses, and copyright issues.
And it has nothing to do with drinking and womanizing all the time!

I could really use a drink.

Interesting link describing the processor architecture and application performance in modern supercomputers.
Good read for anyone interested in some of the background in current super computers and what they used for testing.
Heres the link.

What happens when a domain expires, and is picked up by a spammer?
Or when a domain is transferred to a new IP?
What about when a spamer sends spam through your mail server (using a exploit, worm, Trojan etc)?
What about spamers that send spam from AT&T accounts, to other AT&T accounts.
The article didn't really cover these pretty important questions. Ill have to see what my next statement says about this.
I thought TV stations were required to switch to using digital specific equipment to transmit their shows by this time as well (2006).

Starbucks has been workign on this for years.
Heres a partical quote from the page.

Come on, GI Joe did this back in the 80's with the B.E.T (Broadcast Energy Transmitter).
I hear it's also good for destroying spores before they enter our atmosphere

Is that people like parents, kids who dont know better, collage students etc, are going to give out this information willingly.
They dont know what to expect, or in most cases, what they may be doing is wrong (downloading music, videos etc).
