LOTRO, Eve, probably WoW, there's quite a few out there that have been around for a while (or even not that long) and have a strong community with strong backing from the devs.

It's only when a game lacks massively (Tabula Rasa, AoC, WAR) that things start to go pear shaped.

Unfortunately Mythic made the biggest mistake MMOs seem to be making of late - emulating WoW, poorly.

If people wanted to play WoW, they'd have a subscription. I don't, anymore, but I do have a sub for Eve and I do have a lifetime membership for LOTRO. If another MMO comes along and people like it then we'll see more added to the list of survivable MMOs.

Look at the Asian market, they have MMOs that have been around for ages and aren't shutting down servers. In fact, a lot of MMOs that ARE surviving are ADDING servers.

Taking away servers is akin to saying "look, we're going to shut down soon, so you had better look elsewhere". By doing this, and by not planning the release better, they have pretty much signed their own death certificate.

This is aside from the fact WAR is a terrible game.

I love how your sig is about anti-trolls, yet you're doing it yourself.

What has creating a balanced scoring system got to do with griefing? A lot of MMOs seems to be using this kind of system for PvP to REDUCE griefing. If you get the same points per kill no matter if they are shit hot or a noob you'll always go for the noob (grief). With degraded scoring, you tend to aim higher and leave the noobs till last.

I say good on him. Cops seem to think they are a cop 24/7, yet when it's turned against them it's "locker room talk".

This is why cops get no respect, they think they are above the law. The if I bragged about robbing a bank (even if it was bullshit), or put my status as wanting to kill someone important (prime minister/president) on Facebook or Myspace, the police would use it against me to remove reasonable doubt. I couldn't use the "locker room talk" defense there, I'd end up in prison.

The only issue here is that the cop won't be brought up on disciplinary charges, which is exactly what should happen.

Funny how non-gamers seem to run to Hollywood as a comparison for everything.

Honestly, games have been quite varied from the start, many producers and many distributors. The whole "hollywoodisation" of gaming has come in recent years with massive corporate entities like EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, and the like taking over smaller studios to feed their own agendas.

Yes the game industry is moving toward a Hollywood model, but it's definitely not the one that it's 'always compared'.
