If humanities software developing skills progressed at the same speed as hardware we would have sentient thinking computers right now.

I can't wait until Moores Law breaks and we reach a hard barrier on computing speed. Right now we have far faster computers than anyone actually needs. I think with proper coding we could be running all our current applications without performance degradation on 386 class systems. 11. Sarbanes-Oxley (they dont understand) CFO vs CTO on A Need for Greater Cybersecurity · · Score: 3, Informative

I have been involved in several Sarbanes-Oxley 404 Internal Audits and let me tell you it's an uphill battle. First off I find myself dealing with people working in the financial department. This sort of makes since since 99% of Sarbanes-Oxley focuses on financial responsibility but when it comes to 404 specificly it doesn't make sense. I have been in the situation several times where the 404 internal audit was being funded from the finance department. This puts you in a situation where the IT department is at odds with you. They, the IT department, doesn't know who you are and you need to access all the security aspects of IT and physical security. So, not only do you have to convience the financial types that doing this audit is not optional but mandated by law you have to then convience IT types the same thing and you need access to all of their systems. Both are equally difficult because the financial types have a completly different definition of what an audit is and don't understand that an IT audit requires someone to physically check security of each device and run IDS and penetration testing. The IT people are just as hesitant. They understand quickly why you need to do this but don't want it to be a finance funding person doing the poking around. They want it to be an IT project. Most of the time they have someone in IT that says "heck I can do it" but don't understand the reasoning behind Sarbanes-Oxley's requirement for segregation of incompatible duties. Which means in a nutshell that you cannot be involved in a production or support role of the affected systems.

Being in the IT Security field I thought that this would be a big boom for my career but I have not seen it yet. 404 cleary states that someone has to be responsible for reporting on the security readiness of the company. I don't see how the audits I have performed meets this requirement. Does the 20+ page audits that I produce make the CFO think he can report on security readiness? I don't think so because security is something that changes on a day to day basis. Plus I would bet that the CFO is an end user to some of those systems (badge reader, workstation, email intranet, etc) and that this would prohibit him from being in that role. If I had the resources I would start a comapny and outsource the security audit and reporting responsibility. The major expense would be advertising / education of the corporations of the need of such a service.

Anyways, I could go on all day but in summary most corporations have no idea that they need this and the ones that do know don't understand it.

Truly, the reason that ALL Linux window managers stink is just that, they are not GUIs they are a window manager stuck on top of a GUI that most intelligent people would have to agree stinks! The next problem is that there are a ton of competing window managers and a ton of competing Linux distributions. How the heck is anyone supposed to make commercial products for an operating system that is really 20 different operating systems with 20 different GUIs? Some people will say forget about commercial apps but if people want Linux to ever be more than a hobby OS, at least on the desktop, then this has got to change. Yes OO.o is nearly as good as MS Word but heck I would shell out the $$ for MS Word for Linux if it existed and never look back. I am the first to say that Microsoft as a company is bad and their operating system stinks but I will also stand up and say that Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) is the best office suite in existence. Notice I did not include Outlook as I believe it to be a virus distribution program.

It's not impossible to code quality desktops for a *NIX based system. If you want proof of that look at Mac OS X. Thank god they did not try and build it on top of X11. Instead they let you run X11 on top of their GUI. Wow, what a concept.

All these competing distributions just splinter the Linux market into smaller segments. And the smaller market share you distribution has the more likely you are to be left out in the cold when it comes to commercial products. And for ANY freeware program that runs on Linux I can name a better closed source product. For word processing you have MS Word and believe it or not it's better than OO.o. For graphics you have Photoshop and we all know that it is better than GIMP.

Well, I'll step off of my soap box now and let you flame away but at least think about what I am saying BEFORE you become irrational.

  20. Why LINUX games SUCK on Expert Opinions On Linux Gaming's Future · · Score: 1

IMHO the reason that MOST (so please don't list the 3 games that rock) games stink on Linux is that they rely on X11 and no matter how much you pretty up X11 (gnome, KDE, enlightenment) it still stinks. Especially if you goal is to make a gaming console then you need an API that people can program against that allows high end graphics without any kind of window manager or X11 to get in the way. Then if someone codes a game the first and only graphics you see is the game.

Don't worry all you Linux Zealots I am sure within a week of something like this being deployed you will be able to run whatever distribution of Linux you want on it.

With that said, if I were to build a game console I would base it off of BSD because it would keep my company far from all the people trying to tell me which parts of the code are Open Source and which parts are not. I wouldn't have to release any source, unless I wanted to. Most people that are pro Linux ask why more companies don't base their products on Linux then bitch and complain when a company does but doesn't release a driver or some other piece of code and a huge debate opens up about GPL compliance. Frankly I just don't think it's worth the frustration. It's just my opinion but I believe that GPL will be the death of Linux. Before you flame this post please tell me one thing that Linux has that BSD does not. I can tell you that BSD has Freedom to protect IP and GPL does not.

The GPL is so strict and so easily interpreted a million different ways. I don't understand why anyone would choose Linux to develop a product on. To me it would make much more sense to start out with BSD since the BSD license is so friendly to commercial activities and leaves no room for interpitation. Basically BSD license is "HERE do what you will". Now that is freedom! GPL is anti-freedom.

Look at the success of Darwin / Mac OS X. Apple has chosen to release the source code to Darwin even though they don't have to. Yes, it's self centered in that they get free development for future operating systems but what business is not self centered?

Linux Zealots all shout HOoooRAY when someone uses Linux on a embedded device, heck ANY device, but then bitch when they realize that the company actually wants to make money. It is this type of thinking that will keep Linux from ever being widely deployed in embedded devices. Some day soon people will realize that it's not worth it and install BSD on their BOX and call it whatever they want and never look back.

My thoughts on Linux and the fact that it is GPL is that it has been locked into being a hobby OS from now until it goes the way of the Amiga (see previous article about it posted today on SD).

As someone that has to make the choice of what operating systems get installed on servers, etc, I find myself opting for BSD over Linux every time. For all Linux Zealots that may flame this posting please tell me what does BSD lack that Linux doesn't? On the other hand I offer that Linux lacks freedom that BSD offers in it's parent license.

They build the printers to wear out quick not because they want you to buy a new printer but because they want to make sure that they can combat the 3rd party vendors that sell replacement cartridges and / or refill kits.

I work in the real world where companies have to make money and protect their IP. To me GPL goes against this. If given a choice of a GPL license or a BSD license I opt for BSD every time.

People who take the holeyer than though view of Open Source are definitely walking the high road. It's a narrow-mindedness that I can't believe I'm hearing when coming from someone that I would normally consider to be highly intelligent. To me an example of the true spirit of Open Source is Apple. They took BSD and created Darwin and then release regularly the modifications to that operating system. That is truly honorable considering that with the freedom of BSD they do not HAVE to do so.

Plus, I don't think Steve Jobs would care if his xservers were running Linux or better yet BSD (pref Darwin) without OSX. Apple makes their money selling hardware. I really don't consider Microsoft to be a competitor of Apple. I think the real competitors are Dell, HP, etc..

Anyways, please step down from your Open Source soapbox and take a breath of air with the rest of us down here in the real world.
